The first annual meet, rally and caravan of the Rocky Mountain RX-8 Club, Day 1:
Fantastic is the ony way to describe this!:D
Just a very quick overview of the days events, more to follow later!
Approximtely 60 people, 20 - yes, 20 RX-8's!
We will be posting pix as soon as they are available!
I want to send a very special and heartfelt thanks to McDonald Mazda in Littleton... we never could have pulled this off without your support!
For a few tense moments there, we were worried that there might be a problem with too many RX-8's showing up!:D
The meet and rally at the McDonald Mazda started around 9:00, with lots of prizes going to everyone! We drove West into the Colorado mountains, as one long string, (18!!!) of RX-8's of every color; including two that had the Mazdaspeed body kits. What a sight! We stopped at "Skipper's" in Idaho Springs, after parking all of the cars on the street directly behind there, in again, a nice long row.
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it, everyone from the neighboring states of Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
I can hardly wait until next year!:D

I just wanted to thank thank Doc, Omi, Serff and everyone else who set this up. Great job guys!

And for igozmzm, thanks for the clear corners. It's almost enough to make up for stealing MY Borla. ;)

Day 1 was a blast -- wish I sould have stayed for the track day today :(

Driving from Idaho Springs to Omaha in 7.5 hours was about like a day at the track though :D

I'm jelious, i wish I could have been there. I did here a Mazda RX-7 was pulled over down here by Price on the Fifth. I hope it wasn't someone hurrying to the meet. I guess I need to hurry and get the car.

Wow! Thanks for posting these! I'm gonna have to wait until tomorrow... haven't made that magic leap to digital photography :) And yea, you should have been along for the drive, it was fantastic!
Just to let everyone know, we arehopeful to have the ftp server up and running by Tuesday, and we'll post the link on the club forum website.
That way, everyone can "dump" their photos, and small video clips to it, and we can then start the club photo album and gallery, after a little editing of course.:D
Again, thanks to everyone who made it out and made this such a success! :D

This turned out to be an expensive trip for me, I got a $200 ticket just outside of Rawlins :( I got a nasty sunburn and some mild heat exhaustion too, but it was all worth it. I had so much fun and it was great meeting all of you (especially Kewl, IGOZMZM and Doc).

On the drive up to the canyon I saw many close calls of people cutting off 8's, nearly changing lanes into 8's and cars that would squeeze into the spaces between us. I also saw examples of these things done by people in our group (myself included). To me it seemed we were focused on staying together and less thought was given to safety. I'm sure there were a few motorists who have some choice things to say about RX8 drivers. :) I think for future drives we should consider the following:

1. Pick a designated leader before leaving. I think I inadvertantly started the drive when I pulled out to park in a better location for leaving. I was definately shocked to see everyone pull out behind me. I dont think the person I had pass me was expecting to lead us up the mountain.

2. Stay together in one lane as much as possible regardless of traffic in front of us. I think this one is a very important one for safety. With 20 cars in the group its difficult to aggressively pass people and stay together. I'd rather get stuck behind someone glued to the speed limit and be able to relax and enjoy the drive with the group than have to constantly be looking for openings to change lanes and pass just to keep up. Also I think a long string of RX8's is far more impressive than 18 aggressively driven ones. Think about large groups of motorcycle riders as an example.

Overall, though the drive was fun. Skippers was a nice choice for eats and Skipper was a great host. Speaking of, can someone give me the address there? I owe him 2 bucks for a bottle of water he comped me when all I had was a cc.

Doc, thanks for showing us the short way back to Laramie, that saved us a good hour.

IGOZMZM it was a blast driving down with you and congrats on the Borla exhaust. You're still a jerk for the clear corners incident though :P

Omi, it was great to finally meet you and thanks for all the hard work.

I can't wait to do this again next year!

Twas great meeting you too, Project. Too bad you couldn't stay for day 2, as track day was every bit as fun as meet day!

As for the drive up the mountain, I agree, we need to pick a pace car, drive at moderate speeds (at least until we get to the twistie mountain roads! :D), and stay in 1 lane. The drive along C470 to I70 to the base of the mountain was the one thing about the meet that didn't go off quite flawlessly, but we'll be ready for it next year.

Thanks for the feedback!

What, no details on track day? How did you do Omi? Who all drove on the track?

I drove back to highway 103 today and up highwya 5 to Mt Evans. 103 is a blast! Even the second time around. 5 was not a road you want to drive fast on at all....if you haven't been up that one, don't go expecting to fly up it....narrow with straight down drop offs but what views!

Meet was great fun. Those that couldn't make it this year must plan now on attending next year.

I like Doc's pictures the best; brings back the days before my cataract operations. But would be nice to know who was who. Anyone gonna post an ID guide -- for either the cars or the drivers -- for us non-Rocky denizens?

Also, who thought Omi's exhaust was too loud, and who thought it was just right or not loud enough?

RXhusker
06-09-2004, 12:20 AM
Omicron was just running his Borla -- no midpipe or cat. The question is -- was RXHusker's exhaust too loud :D

P.S. -- that's me in pic 20, 21, 25, 26, 27,30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 36 (my favorite!), 44, and 84.

Doh, I knew that! So that's where your road trip was to. (Didn't think there were many mountains 'round Omaha.) Jealous I ain't in range. Well then, same question re the RXHusker exhaust (from outside and inside the car).

Re the Pics, does numbering refer to the club web site pics? If so I'll need to get a signet ring to get on.

RXhusker
06-09-2004, 10:23 PM
You should be able to just click on the link Serff posted above to access the pics. I haven't gotten any complaints on my exhaust noise -- I didn't even notice the interior noise level on my trip (over 1300 miles in 2 days).

Dang, I feel lucky (many times over). First I win 3 out of 8 raffle prizes. Then I'm the only one from Utah that didn't get a ticket coming back home. Project I'm sorry about the clear corners, if I'm as lucky next year I will make sure your first to trade off prizes with :D I also enjoyed the drive out with you project.

Omicron, Doc and I finished up day 2 with a nice sortof mini-meet to put on the Borla exhaust (among other small mods). Thanks again for the help with that Paul, and thank your wife for the drinks and snacks for me and my friend. Paul I will be sending your a PM about the exhaust shortly.

Got it Casey.

So, did you ever make it to the Cobra museam? And did you buy yourself a radar detector for the trip home?

The Cobra museum is only open on Saturdays so we had to bag that idea for this trip, but now I know and can plan ahead for next time I head out that way. I did end up getting the Escort Passport 8500 X50. I guess it's pretty new and it's only been out a few weeks to a month. Best buy had it on sale :D (the version with the blue display is $40 more!?!?!) But the only time I had real alerts from it was going north on I25, I got Lasered.

Omicron
06-14-2004, 02:09 AM
Yup, there's one spot there just south of Loveland, CO where there must be some other source of Laser other than cops, as I always get it there too.

It was quite a fun time. There is a full write up on the home page at http://rockymountainrx8.com. Come check that out. We didn't just drive up I70 to Idaho Springs, that would be no fun! We went up into Evergreen and then up over Squaw Pass road (past Mt. Evans) and down into Idaho Springs. It was a blast.
