HP for Auto

Off the line the automatic is really dull, anyone have any luck with mods or interventions that worked? Until the revs get up, the car is frankly slow. I launched next to my friend in a freaking V-6 Jeep Grand Cherokee and he kept up with me. It is also nearly impossible to creat wheelspin. Any suggestions?

yeah... sell it & get a SRT4... it's fast4r than everything else & it seems to be what you're looking for, a stop light racer.

did you use the manual mode in the automatic? and anyways of course a jeep would keep up with you it's the torque.

But anyway when my friend's asked if I wanted to do a quick race to see how fast my car is I told them I wouldn't beat them too bad in a drag but because of the handling that I can take corners fast and would beat any of them in street races, these inculde a V6 grand am with no upgrades, a highly upgraded civic and Honda Del Sol with a bunch of upgrades but they all have 200K + miles on thier car and I only have 600 miles on mine.

I have to drive the automatic unfortunately, as I am in a wheelcahir and have to use hand controls. Sad thing is your reaction time is faster with your hands, and it doesn't matter. How about any interventions for HP or am I just screwed by the nature of the rotary's power curve?

The power curves for the AT lo-power engine and the MT high-power engine are almost identical up to 7000 rpm. ALL the extra power of the MT engine is between 7000 and 9000 rpm - and the AT engine, no matter what you mod, simply can not rev that high due to the torque converter limitations and the breathing limitations - the lo-power engine does not have the extra intake path, intake and exhaust ports, or extra pair of fuel injectors to be able to rev that high. There will be very little, short of forced induction like turbo or supercharging, that will add power to the current AT engine.

For 2006, Mazda is going to introduce a new 5 speed auto trans that will be designed to handle the 9000 rpm redline of the high power engine (and will be matched with the high-power engine), and THAT will be the solution for auto drivers - a complete trade-in. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mazda discontinue the low-power engine in North America after 2005. They will also introduce a 6 speed sequential semi-manual gearbox (ie computer controlled clutch and shifters, like Ferrari F1 system) option for 2006.

Regards,
Gordon

Thanks for all the replies and especially all of the information Gordon. I guess I will just not be racing anyone soon. lol

By the way, i am not in the wheelchair from driving too fast, it was from riding too fast over a cliff in a 4X4, driven by someone who I didn't know had been drinking. Don't try that at home.

Sorry to hear that bud...

Yah, what I didnt have time to mention was already said. In order to get power, you need to get revs...the only thing I could think of was put the AT into 'manual mode', but even then, the tranny will peter out as you actually get some power.

If you want to take that Jeep, take em in an autocross course with turns

LOL, I'm really not overly concerned with taking the Jeep, but it would be nice. I read in a post here that people got an additional 10HP from the K&N filter, anyone experience this same result? I also have an AR-15, so I could win the race whenever I want to via unscrupulous means.

According to this post by Jeup he cut his 0-60 timeby .5 secondsafter adding intake exhaust and midpipe tohis automatic. Heclaims his auto droppedfrom 8.1 seconds to 7.6.

Unfortunately he doesnt knowhow to attach his gtech runs directly to hisposts andhis image station sitewont let you view his gtech pics w/o some password so theres no way to see any of his latest results. But Idont see anyreason why he wouldmake up those figures. Im stilla little skepitcal though untilI see the latest runs. Seemslike a lot of added power fromso few mods

Nitrous is an option if you want some more power. I am not a big fan of it however...

Mmm...what I meant by ECU tuning was playing around with E-Manage. Just by playing with A/F ratios and raising them to about 13:1, there's no reason why you can't get some increase on hp. You might not get as much as MazdaManiac, but you should get a decent amount.

Painlessif I were you I wouldntgo off spending my money on anything rightaway until Jeup posts someupdates that show real proof of thegtech times he claims to have run. I just viewed one of hismore recent runs --copy and paste this into your address bar --www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid120/pa943894d3f5f4eaeae59ec8806da31ec/f864ebc1.jpg.orig.jpg whichis the onehe claims is supposedto have hit 60 in 7.6 seconds. Ifyou look at the quarter mile time it is covered it up w/white for some reason.

Not too thrilledto see a gtech pic thatlooks like its been edited. Then again atleast the rest of the numbers on that run look correct for a 7.6 0-60 time. I wish hedpost the pics already

I was simply going to start with a K&N filter and then go from there, so not to worry about a lavish spending spree, but thanks for looking out for me.
