I am planning to sell my car soon. Does anyone have any advise on selling a car?

I realize that I will get more money if I sell it myself, but is it worth the hassle? There are some things that I don't like about selling a car:

* having to basically spend my entire weekend waiting for people to come look at the car

* having to trust the person to take a test drive

* having to trust that the person hasn't forged the check (Yeah, only take cashier's checks, but those can be forged also).

* hainvg to trust that the new owner will register the car in his name before getting into a wreck.

OTOH, I don't like the idea of basically giving a dealer $2000 (the approximate difference between selling my car myself and selling it to a dealer) to do all of the for me.

Any suggestions? Are there some dealers that will give more money than others?

The car is a 2000 Honda Accord, by the way.

[D. Harry] there's just one question you gotta ask yourself, "do i feel lucky?"
well, do ya?? punk??? [/D. Harry]

heh heh, just ribbin' ya ;)
but there is only one question you've gotta ask yourself, and that's "is this extra risk and work worth it for the money i earn from selling the car myself?"

i know, not an easy question, but that's all it boils down to.

'cause of the car you're selling (a newish Accord), it shouldn't be difficult to find a wide range of buyers: from jerk-ass kids (like some of my richer friends), to older folks who just want a nice sedan. and yeah, first impressions aren't too bad a judge of character when it comes to trusting people to sign the car in their name (unless you're there to watch them do it... but again, more time cost.)

if you put it out on the market, and be stingy about appointments to see the car, i dont' think it'll drive you too crazy...

Also remember (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) - when you trade in a car, you only pay sales tax on the difference.

For example, if you sell the car yourself, then buy a $30,000 car, you will pay sales tax on $30,000 ($2,250 @ 7.5%).

If you trade-in your car for (let's just say) $12,500, you will pay sales tax on $17,500 ($1,312.50); saving $937.50 in sales tax.

So, the difference of $2000 you stated would actually only be about $1000.

Food for thought.

This is something I'm trying to decide right now too... Fortunately, the difference for me will proably be quite a bit higher, as my car isn't quite stock, so I could probably sell it for about $6500, while i could only trade it in for like 2500, so in my case, i think it is definately worth selling it by myself... plus, i have 3 months to sell it before i have to buy my 8...

There's always Ebay Motors also, most people bid on a vehicle and if you identify most of the problems with the vechicle, and take lots of pictures. You should get a fair market bid. Just state that they need to handle how it's going to be picked up, or shipped.
