Honolulu and Waikeekee were a waste of time when I went. Too overrun wth tourists and people trying to cash in on tourists. It was like a really nice version of Panama City Florida.

Kona was great though. In Honolulu we paid big money to go on a dive/snorkel trip on a boat and it sucked.

On Kona, a guy was renting snorkels and fins out of his van at the beach and it was the most amazing reef I have ever been on. For $5.

Don't miss Pearl Harbour though. That is definitly worth the trip

The Big Island, Kona side. There's more to do there, and it's not like Honolulu/Waikiki (which is just Los Angeles with coconut palms).

There's Volcanos National Park where you can hike out right to the flowing lava. The scuba diving and snorkeling in Kona is the best of all the islands, IMO. Sea turtles and gorgeous tropical fish right off the shore. Sportfishing (if you're into that) is excellent too... they have a big billfishing tournament there every August.

Don't stay on the Hilo side... that's the only "major" city but the diving isn't great and it rains there a LOT. The dry side (leeward side) is the best.

For lodgings, there's everything from big fancy resorts north of Kailua Kona (Hapuna Beach Prince, Hilton Waikoloa, etc) with excellent golf courses, to nice intimate B&Bs, down to cheap, simple, but nice condos right on the ocean in town. Click my webpage for some pix.

And if you're diving/snorkeling, please let me recommend Jack's Diving Locker in Kailua-Kona. They're the BEST in town.

NONONONONONONON. SKIP THAT!!

Go To Kauai!! it is a great beautiful island that has a very homey local feel. i have the info at home but we stayed in our own little cottage on private property that was hidden by foliage and had it's own pool. 50 yards off of Poipu Beach! and it was cheaper than any of the "resorts". went and got grogeries at the locals store where we talked to the people who lived there and got hooked up with all sorts of great places to go and great deals. places off the beaten path that most of the Tourists never get to. we went ove rby this town on the east side and found a beach one day that was like 5 miles long. the only people there were my wife and i, 2 local guys fishing, one local surfing and another walking her dog with her kid. then one day we went kayaking up a river in the canyon. we were going to go with a tour but the owner of the tour company had the day off and he says "well i'm showing a freind around so go with us it will be just the four of us". we went way up the river till we had to walk for aways, down this side trail to a clearing where there was a waterfall with a big pond. no one else around.

i could go on and on but really you gotta go to the little island- it's great!!

i have a pic with me and my wife at the waterfall. i'll post it up later.
