View Full Version : How much do my stock 18s weigh? BigOLundh 06-08-2004, 01:59 AM Does anybody know? SuPerHerO::tOnY 06-08-2004, 02:01 AM yu can try goin to the mazda site and check there. MrWigggles 06-08-2004, 02:12 AM There is some dispute about this. Answers very from 20 to 22 lbs. My research led me to believe the wheels were 20 lbs without the TPMS and the the corresponding weights to offset it, but I have never weighed the rim myself. A bare 18"X8" rim at 20 lbs is not bad and would be fair to term a "lightweight" wheel. -Mr. Wigggles TM45 06-08-2004, 07:17 AM I just received two stock tires/rims delivered by UPS. Total package weight was just over 100 pounds, so the stock tire/rim combo is about 50lbs. each. legokcen 06-08-2004, 09:44 AM Originally posted by TM45 I just received two stock tires/rims delivered by UPS. Total package weight was just over 100 pounds, so the stock tire/rim combo is about 50lbs. each. I believe a lot of those weights are ranged. They probibly paid the cost of shipping 100 lbs. Anyone have a scale at home? Just weight yourself, then yourself with a wheel and subtract. It will settle the dispute. RotorManiac 06-08-2004, 10:49 AM can you guys please help me out? what's the math to convert lbs to kilos? really, i have no idea about lbs... robertdot 06-08-2004, 11:14 AM Go to google and search for "convert 22 lbs to kg"... Google is handy. Ole Spiff 06-08-2004, 11:58 AM 1 U.S. pound is equal to .453592 kilograms, so 50 lbs is 22.679605 kg legokcen 06-08-2004, 12:20 PM 2.2 lbs is 1.0 kg. That's easier math to do in your head. RotorManiac 06-09-2004, 04:45 PM oh right, thanks guys, that explains everything ;) cortc 06-09-2004, 11:04 PM I just shipped a set, wheels with tires mounted and balanced are 45 lbs each... No TPMS but the sensors are very light, just ounces... MrWigggles 06-10-2004, 01:23 AM cortc, That was with the RE040? Since the RE040 is 26lbs, that would make the wheel about 19 lbs. That is not bad for an 18"X8" factory wheel. -Mr. Wigggles rx8spiritR 06-10-2004, 07:11 AM so it's about the same weight as a 18X8.5 SF challenge. tpryor 06-10-2004, 07:21 AM OK - here's the scoop. I have three sets of wheels (two for autocross), and have weighed them all. SHIPPING weight on a bare (painted) wheel is 19 lbs (8.61826 kg - that's box and all), wheel is about 18.5 (8.39146 kg). Polished is a little lighter, at 18 lbs (8.16466 kg). This is with no TPMS sensors or valve stems. Haven't weighed the chrome - but they are SUBSTANTIALLY heavier than these two. Yanje 06-10-2004, 07:24 AM hmmmm, wha. didnt realise the stock wheels are so light MrWigggles 06-10-2004, 04:04 PM I am in the middle of getting some aftermarket wheels. I am thinking about putting some light low-profile gumball tires on my stock wheels and save them for the track. -Mr. Wigggles RotorManiac 06-10-2004, 08:26 PM since stock wheels are light, is there any point in changing them, except for the looks? are aftermarket wheels even lighter?the only ones i've seen are the MS magnesium forged wheels, which look great but the price.... oh christ! 8.5kg for an 18x8 wheel sounds quite low titaniumgrey 06-11-2004, 11:44 PM ya sine after market wheels are lighter ... look around , and if anything change to 17" if you want more performance murix 06-12-2004, 12:01 AM Our stock wheels rock. The only change I will make are some 245/40 Kuhmo Ecsta MX's unless someone can point me towards a better tire compromise for street/track. cortc 06-12-2004, 10:18 AM The stock wheels are very good, they are some of the best OEMs out there... You can find 19s that are light but will spend more, now the lower profile tire is a little lighter so that helps a bit... You can buy light forged lug nuts and then replace your wheel studs with titanium, put on two piece rotors and lighter brake calipers, etc... BigOLundh 06-18-2004, 07:11 PM so 18lbs for 18inch wheels.... DAMN, that is freakin light... Ok, now im 100% convinced im not changing out my rims. BigOLundh 06-18-2004, 07:16 PM Tires tho... yeah i definetly see myself putting on wider tires as soon as my current ones wear out. Althought, with only 300 miles on the car currently I dont see that happening anytime soon. davefzr 06-18-2004, 07:19 PM I find it hard to believe that these wheels weigh 18 pounds.. It seems there are high variances between people... Another person weighed them at 22 pounds... Maurice.. Canzoomer.. has said they are 21 pounds... Who really knows... When I get new wheels in a few weeks i'll weigh them at that time too.. but I guess i'll just be another statistic as well... takahashi 06-20-2004, 07:48 AM 10kg (22lbs) stock is very light! There are only a few that are weighing lighter! The one you know of is going to cost a lot! I like CE28N Volks btw Ole Spiff 06-20-2004, 12:57 PM I should be getting new wheels installed on Tuesday; at that time I'll weigh the stock rims and see how much they actually weigh. The 18 x 8.5 rims I'm getting weigh 17lbs each. I too was under the impression the stock rims weigh 22lbs but I'll know for sure on Tuesday. mlx8 08-12-2004, 11:56 PM FWIW, for combo track/street use, you might want to take a look at the Falken Azenis. I've seen several club driver ed event instructors for other marques using the Azenis with favorable comments. Not as sticky as stuff like Kuhmo Victor 700's etc, but appear to be more durable while not giving up that much traction. And these were being used on substantially heavier, i.e. @ 3800 - 4000+ lbs "other marques" Last, the Azenis 245/40x18's are whole lots more affordable ($135ish) than, say Michelin Pilot Sports or Yoko AVE Sports or SO-2 or 03 Pole Positions etc. ($200+) HTH davefzr 08-13-2004, 12:04 AM I just sold my stock wheels and had them shipped. The package weighed at fed ex including the box, wheel and lugs came to 25.8 pounds. mlx8 08-13-2004, 09:50 AM If you don't mind my asking. I'd like to think about having an extra set for snow &/or driver event tires. Thanks davefzr 08-13-2004, 01:06 PM I sold mine for 680 shipped. That was for wheels only with 18,000 miles on them in great condition. No tpms cortc 08-13-2004, 02:37 PM I am going to take a stock rim with no tire or tpms from the dealership and weigh it on a very accurate scale we have at the office... The scale is accurate to .1 of a pound, and buy the way the TPMS sensors weigh in at just ounces; just a little more than a standard tire valve... cortc 08-13-2004, 02:39 PM I sold my stock wheels and tires with 2k miles on them mounted and balanced with standard valves for U$1,200.00 plus shipping on ebay with buy it now in 12 hours... BigOLundh 08-18-2004, 12:43 AM HOLY CANOLIIIII thats bad ass. If i can get 1200 shipped there is no reason not to get aftermarket wheels that are lighter!!! |
