Oil in the RX-8 and consumption of it?

So my 8 has a couple of miles on it and the oil light keeps turning on while I drive. I call the dealership and tell them WTF is up with that. They tell me everytime I fuel up I must check my oil to make sure it has some, my reply was like why the hell should I check my oil everytime I fuel up. That seems very bothersome to me he said that the way the rotary engine is made it eats up oil to lubricate it (if that makes anysense) .

Now is this true or is dealership BS'ing to get me off their back?

its true - its in the manual, i thought you read it already?

by design oil gets eaten a bit by bit. just check the level of oil every other fill up or so and add as necessary - you should be doing this anyway as part of the maintenance of ANY vehicle.

Consumption of oil is one of the shining points of a rotary. You should have known this WELL before purchasing this car.

5w-20 oil, from a name brand company (Penzoil, Castrol, etc) is what you need.

that just means they overfilled it a little from the factory....
I use about 1 qt every 3000-4000 miles... M-flash, Castrol 5w-20.... (2.25 qts so far, ~7500 on the odo)

There is a pump whose entire purpose is to send a small amount of oil into the combustion chamber. The engine is not just "eating oil." Its being purposefully injected!

What is the Build date on your 8? Does this only happen around 4,500-5,000 RPM?
If yes there was an issue with early RX-8's covered in this TSB

Sounds like the same oil Pan issue I and many other’s had and addressed in this TSB. The build date can be found on a sticker on the Drivers side door jam. Also if the last 6 digits of your vin# are below 111043 you are effected. This is a simple warranty issue, be sure your dealer has the parts in stock before you drop the car off or they will have to keep it an extra day.

I had a problem with my oil light going on every 400 miles. Came to find out that there was a defect in the oil pan. No problems now.

Build date is on the inside of the driver's door.

3800+ miles on mine, 1 oil change so far. The oil light has never come on; I've never topped it off. No problems so far.
