View Full Version : Yellow top Optima
abbid 06-05-2004, 09:48 PM i have a deep cycle optima battery from my previous cars sound system. the battery is still pretty new, paid 149.99 for it not more than 5 months ago, its so sad to see it sitting on the garage floor, so i attempted to install it, after removing the battery cover, i realized the battery terminals are on the opposite side, and the power cable is very short. after searching the forums i see that no one has successfully posted a way to install the battery. so my question is, can someone point me in the right direction to get this installed? my stock battery says made in mexico, its 1 month old and its already leaking. help ?

see if you can get a stereo shop to install it
abbid 06-05-2004, 11:17 PM other forums dont seem to get as much feedback as this one, sorry wont happen again
mikeb 06-05-2004, 11:20 PM no problem
it might take longer but you will get a answer
have you tried a local stereo shop??
I'm sure they could figure it out
abbid 06-05-2004, 11:31 PM i asked because i was bored and wanted something to do, im not too sure if a steroe shoppe could do it, the wire needs to be relocated about 6 inches, and the positive terminal has an upsidedown "L" shape to it with a fuse or two attached to it, i was just wondering if anyone has found a way yet.
Jedi54 06-05-2004, 11:46 PM Audio guys do nothing but sit around and figure our how to rewire things...
If they could completely rewire my Mazda 626 to handle almost 4000 watts pumping through the stereo, I'm sure they can figure this one out...
GOOD LUCK
abbid 06-05-2004, 11:49 PM you dont know the type of stereo shoppes here in phoenix. i asked one of the installers what a remote wire is for and he said it controls the volume on the amp...... im not too sure i trust arizona installers, unless im tryin to fork over a couple hundred dollars for a audio express install, which im not, and thats why i posted here....
Jedi54 06-05-2004, 11:52 PM Oh, not good...
Wish I could be of more help... I'm sure someone will soon stumble across this thread with the answer you're looking for.
Again, Good luck!

The Remote wire turns the amp on and off, by detecting voltage. The reciever is what changes the the volume. To me putting the optima battery seems simple, but you have to get longer batter cables. I am not sure how the stock cables are ran or wired on the 8, but It seems to me that you could attemp to trace each cable, and see where they are and how they connect to the cars electrical system. Then you could go to a parts store and buy a longer cable and replace the stock one.
abbid 06-06-2004, 12:10 AM yeah, i know what a remote wire does, i had 4400 watts of car audio in my nissan altima, i installed it all myself. BUt thanks for your input ill look into it and let you all know
Cool. I keep meaning to get around to doing this. But given our spending priorities at the moment it probably won't be for several months so I look forward to your instructions ;)
btw, for anyone who can't find the Optima batteries locally, or just wants some info,
this (http://www.1st-optima-batteries.com/) looks like a good page. The few times I checked Optima's own site it was not very useful.
Sounds like you should go to an electronics store and pick up some 2/0 or 4/0 awg wire, battery post adapters, and do it yourself...
abbid 06-06-2004, 03:26 AM hey gin could ya point me in the right direction for some battery post adapters...
mikeb 06-06-2004, 03:41 AM ^^ I think you can get them at auto stores like
pep boys, kragen , auto zone, etc

Third..you never store a battery directly in the ground especially on concrete becase this will deep cycle the battery and drain it of any charge.
abbid 06-06-2004, 03:48 PM ....-third thats what optimas are made for, long storage..
It'll last up to 2 times longer than other batteries.
It can sit unused 3 times longer than other batteries.
It is over 15 times more resistant to vibration than other batteries.
It's nonspillable and can mount in almost any position.
It provides constant performance quality keeping your battery running at the same level even as it's being discharged.
It provides more power in the inital 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds of the vehicle starting process than comparably rated conventional lead acid batteries.
BoxerGT2.5 06-07-2004, 09:46 AM The only optima batt that fits in our cars is the orange top. 34R reverse terminal. Did ya try laying it on it's side??? With the terminals facting the firewall? Might be a dumb idea but the optima batts can be mounted anyway. Or you could cut the factory power and neg terminals off and lengten the wires and get new terminals. Frankly...I would just go buy the orange top before cutting into the wires...but thats just me. You could save the yellow top for an audio application where trunk mounting the batt may be appropriate. Or just sell it to one of your friends and try to recoup atleast half. ??
abbid 06-07-2004, 05:53 PM okie i went to checker auto parts and bought 3 peices. a 10 " extension, a side terminal clamp, and a battery post. i put the battery post to the side terminal clamp, cut the 10" wire down to about 1 inch, clamped the terminal to the open end of the wire, and basically extended the batery post 3 inches to get it back to its normal place. i am currently at work, i will take a picture using my panasonic GU7 camera phone. its not too good but im sure people will get the idea
installing my red top now... I am just goint to extend the Pos term with some Copper Strap. Ill take a pic in a bit. YOu just need about 3 " then drill a wole in bot ends and clap it on the stock cable and the clamp the stock terminal to the other side :)
Pics to come.
mikeb 07-07-2004, 06:26 PM so any pics
abbid 07-07-2004, 08:30 PM no pics yet, i can take one with my GU87 but its not the greatest

mikeb 07-08-2004, 07:30 PM I forget what is more powerful
red or yellow optima
abbid 07-09-2004, 12:49 PM red has more CCA [cold cranking amps] and the yellow is made to be deeply discharged and recharged without and adverse effects. the reason i have a yellow is because i had 4400 watts of audio in my previous car. and dead batteries were killin my pocket book. spending another 100 bucks on a red one wasnt worth it.
