View Full Version : Who's keeping, who's trading in, who doesn't know yet?
VikingDJ 05-27-2004, 06:40 PM I was just curious as to who plans on keeping their car for 6-10+ years or more, and who has made their car expendable for a future trade in or sale, and who simply doesn't know what their plans are. Naturally with the youngsters, their parents currently have the say, but for us older folks we have options. Is anyone planning on trading it in for the mazdaspeed rx8 in 2006-2008, if and when it comes out? Originally, I thought this would be a longtime purchase, but I now plan to avoid any future problems and trade mine in either after 4 years of 50k. I will be putting 10-12k a year on mine. We'll see how things go in next 3-4 years, but the mazdaspeed or upgraded newer model is a very strong possibility in the future.
HiTMaNN 05-27-2004, 06:45 PM i made my mind if the 7 come sout again im trading
Aratinga 05-27-2004, 06:48 PM Plunk me squarely in the "don't know yet" column. Normally when I buy a car it's to keep; I've got 13 year old and 4 year old Miatas that will stay with me forever. The RX-8, though purchased with the intent to keep it long-term, may have to go at some point down the road if I'm ever in a position to buy a home.
Considering the housing market, though, I don't think the 8 needs to worry about getting sold anytime soon.

Gigolo Jason 05-27-2004, 07:50 PM I don't know, I havn't traded in my FD yet. I do however have too many cars so I will have to part with one soon I think.

send your fd my way!
whosyourbaba 05-27-2004, 07:52 PM going to keep mine, i planned it as a long term. hopefully i can make a collection of cars. AND THAT IS A SCARY AVATOR. hahaha
Winning_BlueRX8 05-27-2004, 08:59 PM I'm too upside down to trade mine in. I'll probably keep her for another year.
Velocity-8 05-27-2004, 09:18 PM I'm 37 and the longest I've keep 1 car was 3 years. Only time will tell..
Keeping for sure... 6-10 years if not a lot longer.
Inconsequential 05-27-2004, 09:41 PM Yo Rohit, from what I hear, there is definitely a new Supra coming out, but it is slated to be in the 60-70k range, if Mazda follows suit for hp and pricing like what was done before with the FD and Supras of old, well, then you can do the math

Skyline is coming as a 2007 and it should resemble the G35/350Z.
I'm undecided on my WRX, I live it but I'm all for change and the latest thing... Part of me wants to mod the hell out of my WRX and then get something else as a daily driver, the other part of me wants to not mod anymore and trade in a year or two for an EVO or STi... I saw the new Crystal Grey STi at a dealer today and I was about ready to ask the guy to come up with some numbers... must... resist...
it's nice to go years without a car payment.. So far I plan on this being a low-mileage car so I'm hoping for at least 10 years as long as it's relatively reliable. By then maybe it'll be time for a hydrogen-powered car. But, that's what I said in 1990 with the Miata.
silvercloud 05-28-2004, 06:52 AM My car history has been to keep a car I really like for 7 and a half years - usually until I am spending as much on repairs as I would spend on a new car payment - Cars I'm not so enthralled with are gone in 4 .
I'll be keeping this car until the repair bills become too high- hopefully that will be a long time from now. : )
blue flash 05-28-2004, 07:05 AM i will depend on what mazda comes out with. this is my first rotary and i'm enjoying the hell out of it .if it looks better than the 8 and has more hp i will trade. thats 1 reason i wont do any radical mods ,i want to keep it as stock as possible.
allstate 05-28-2004, 10:00 AM I really think it depends on what gas prices do. (I drive 60-70 miles a day round trip). I love the 8 but if I had known that gas prices were going to nearly double since the day I purchased it I would have thought a little harder. It is not even summer yet and gas prices are getting outrageous. I could shave 20 cents off the top from just having a car that needs regular unleaded. I will probably get flamed for this but oh well.
Rotary Nut 05-28-2004, 10:03 AM I plan on keeping my 8 for about 2-3 years then upgradng to a GT w/NAV and yes it will be an AT. I hope by that time the HP/MPG issues will be improved and they will bring out that way kewl dark mazdaspeed electric blue among a host of other improvements.

You need a family car now....mini van?
I had my Rx7 for 15 years and only gave it up when I got the 8. I expect I will have the 8 forever subject only to matters beyond my control.

No flames, just reminding you that the RX-8 runs just fine with regular unleaded gas.
loco4rx8 05-28-2004, 11:50 AM My plan is to keep the car as long as it's running reliably. I love it as much as I loved my Miata, which I kept for 8 years, 176,000 miles.
TownDrunk 05-28-2004, 12:48 PM I'll get rid of mine when the warranty expires. Since I'm averaging about 11K a year right now, I'll probably have it until the summer of 2007. It depends what's out then as to what I buy. I really want a convertible so if they have an '8 w/o a top I might get that. Otherwise, I really like the new Elise (though only two seats). I'll have to wait and see.

I agree. But I found on mine that when I want to run it hard (like in 7-8krpm range, it does not like regular very much at all. Those high rpms make my knock sensor or something go off when using regular, so if I want to run it hard, on my particular car I simply have to use super. I agree on the gas price though. I drive 600 miles a week total, but I am finding myself using my beater 95 vw golf more often these days (about 400 on golf, 200 on rx8 per week). I want to drive rx8 more, but it simply is costing me too much right now. For me, a better gas mileage rx8 will ultimately swing me towards trading it in as well but I promised myself that when buying a new car, I would not keep it to the point where I'd have to start shelling out money to repair it. When warranty is gone, car is gone. We'll see if something different comes out whether it's a new and improved rx8, or something else. I just hope the rx8 doesn't hit the 45-50k mark. I might find myself crying because I will not be able to afford it.
livitup 05-28-2004, 04:55 PM We were at the BMW dealership yesterday, my wife wants an X5...
I was sitting in one of the new 7 series, drooling. Joking, I asked if I could have one...
"Sell the RX-8 and your 325 and then we can talk," was the reply.
Hmm... dunno yet. :)
guy321 05-28-2004, 04:57 PM Im keeping mine forever, and when I pass away i'm having it turned into a coffin.
Yes, you can take it with you!
