how come the makers of the 1000 HP MAZDA 6 DRAG used the
2.3L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine (the i-4 i think) and not the
3.0L DOHC 24-valve 6-cylinder engine ?
wouldnt it be better? more power? faster?
correct me if im wrong:)

Weight, probably.

You can't corner as well if you're throwing the weight of a 6 cylinder engine from side to side as compared to a 4 cylinder engine. The mass of the engine moving from one side to another would be reason enough for me to use the 4 cyl over the 6.

edit:
Didn't see the DRAG mentioned :) If it's a drag car, it might be limited by the class it's competing in.

yes, it could be the class it's running in, or the mechanical characteristics of the two engines...
simply because an engine has more pistons doesn't mean it's a better candidate for a very high-boost drag application.

The Toyota Supra's in the Japenese GT500 racing league in Japan use 2.0 liter I-4 engines as opposed to the stock 3.0 I-6, I think because because it was better suited for boost.

It may also be because the 2.3 is a mazda engine, whereas the 3.0 is a ford engine. just a guess

that's precisely it: the I4 they've got is smaller, lighter, and makes better power than Nissan's RB26DETT derived motor they run in their Skylines (which is their big famous 2.6L straight 6)... although Honda's 3.5L v6 is still the power king...

strangely enough, a Supra won the championship last year though... go figure. :)
