Wish you could see the results of the side impact better- looks like the crumple zones work great on the front and back though! From the damage to the front in the final picture, it must have been going a decent speed. Thanks for posting those!

looks like the a pillar stayed together in the front impact. that definetly bodes well.

What is the speed of the approaching object here? Is there a typical value?

Don't know about Japan, but in the US, the NHTSA does full-width frontal crashes at 35 miles per hour against a fixed barrier. The IIHS (insurance Institute for Highway Safety) does offset (half-width) crashes at 40 mph, these usually do alot more damage than the full frontal impacts. Side impacts are done with a 3000 lb object moving at about the same speed into a stationary car.

What's really amazing is that there's hardly any visible buckling in the entire (huge) door well, so as Zoom said, the virtual pillar in the rear door concept is working quite nicely.

I don't know about you guys, but I would not want to be a back seat passenger in that white car. That thing smashed pretty far in.

but look how the c pillar hasn't buckled i agree that the back end is a loss but the rear seat area doesn't look like it was penetrated.

now if that had been a mini cooper.....

It looks like the impact penetrated pretty deep, but the pillars look like they held up well, especially the in the rear, the passenger compartment looks good, considering the penetration.

Yup, looks pretty good. Anyone recall what the "star" rating is on the '8? 5 Star? 4 Star?
