first gear grind

I have intermittent problems getting out of first gear with my 6MT with the touring package. I’ve had the car since mid-January, and the problem has occurred 4 or 5 times. This happens while pulling the shifter out of first gear. The shifter gets stuck inside the first gear gate, while making some horrendous grinding noises. The shifter could not be pull or push out of that position until I slow the car down (without trying excessive force). After slowing down and successfully getting out of first gear, the shifter feels completely smooth. At first, I thought this was user error, i.e. the clutch wasn’t fully disengaged, but I verified that was not the case after having this happen 3+ times. Also, the issue seems to only happen a few minutes after cold starts and when the car is going downhill
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I’ve had the dealer look at this when I had the recalls done. They couldn’t reproduce it after keeping the car for a couple days… not surprising, since it only happens to me every couple weeks. I don’t want to take the car back to the dealer for another few days, only to have them find nothing.

thanks

(still reeling from the grinding)

No clue yet, but looking for more info. About how fast are you going when you try to pull it into 2nd and it stuck.. Also, how slow did you need to be going to get it out of 1st?

Happened again this morning. argh! two consecutive days in a row. The car was cold and going downhill.
I was going at around 10~12 mph, tried to pull it out of first, and stuck again... grind grind grind. Slowed down to about 5 mph for it to come out. All of these instances were at low revs (< 6K) like the gearbox problems in other threads. It sort of felt like the clutch was only partially disengaged even tho the peddle was all the way down. My usual engagement point is about 1/2-2/3 of the way up.

Most of us find the normal engagement point much much lower. You may be experiencing loose pressure plate bolts. Easy fix for the dealer.
