Loosly fit the door into the opening. once you have checked that the door will close and be alligend in the middel of the opening you can tightin the screws thew 05-06-2004, 09:12 PM Close the new door and confirm the alignment before final tighting thew 05-06-2004, 09:13 PM reattach the filler neck screws and enjoy : thew 05-06-2004, 09:14 PM one more thew 05-06-2004, 09:15 PM 2 more thew 05-06-2004, 09:16 PM last one LoKnLoD 05-06-2004, 09:39 PM Looks Great, thanks for the step by step. I've been thinking hard about getting one of those for my Titanium. Thanks Again! thew 05-06-2004, 09:47 PM its very easy only took me about 15 mins .. I have seen the satin finish.. and my chrom now theres a perl to ,, I tink i like mine the best thow .. it ties in the exhust finishers i installed.. Now i am installing the lighted shift knob. ill post those next. GO for it get the darn thing :) CryoMax 05-06-2004, 10:14 PM Is there any trick to be careful of, to make sure the door release mechanism still works? Last thing I want to do is end up with a door that won't open... :) ...Paul PS> It looks sweet. This, plus strakes, are the two "mods" I want to do, and given the step-by-step I've seen here, I think I actually have the courage to do it myself! (Step one: Buy a screwdriver... Step two: Go back and buy the correct SIZE screwdriver... ;) ) brothervoodoo 05-06-2004, 10:15 PM Mod, toss this into the DIY section, nice work. aznkukuboi 05-06-2004, 10:57 PM lookin nice thew 05-07-2004, 02:22 AM no its really easy.. the release mec does not change at all.. you just take out the two screws the hold the door hing on the car.. It is very easy just make sure you tape over the paint with good painters tape.. the blue or green kind :) thew 05-07-2004, 02:26 AM fuel door open Notice the latch mec is on the car not the door . thew 05-07-2004, 02:28 AM same thing diffrent angle again the mec is not moved or touched.. just the door .. there is no reason anyone cant do this install in 20 min's alone. you need on 8 mm socket. some blue painters tape. good luck 93rdcurrent 05-07-2004, 02:32 AM nice mikeb 05-07-2004, 05:43 PM looks sharp on the blue Omicron 05-07-2004, 07:19 PM Looks great, and a nice DIY to boot! Well done, thew! :D MEGAREDS 05-07-2004, 10:17 PM Could someone post a pic of the door on a titanium? Thanks for the D.I.Y. RosenthalMazda 05-07-2004, 11:10 PM Smokin'! Thanks for the pics. If anyone wants their car on my site that has one installed, please email tommy@finishlineperformance.com No $tommy_bucks$ or nothing but I'll give credit and any plug for sumthin' if you want. thew 05-07-2004, 11:36 PM :) ty Nubo 05-10-2004, 11:12 AM The chrome finish looks good on the WB. thew 05-10-2004, 12:30 PM aye it does.. you should see it in person RX4+30Years=RX8 05-10-2004, 01:51 PM I think it would look much better on my Ti Gray. I'll install it when you send it. ;-) XcelR8 05-10-2004, 07:37 PM Looks good. I really like them on darker colors. I'm not sure about my silver, it would blend in. Side note...I always remove the little plastic cord holding the gas cap. It allows the cap to hang and scratch the car while filling up. Just make sure you don't leave it at the pump. thew 05-11-2004, 12:57 AM Side note...I always remove the little plastic cord holding the gas cap. It allows the cap to hang and scratch the car while filling up. Just make sure you don't leave it at the pump. [/B][/QUOTE] good idea !! Ill be removeing that tommrow RX4+30Years=RX8 05-11-2004, 01:08 PM I looked at the satin finish at the Rosenthal web site and that one appears to have a hinge molded into the cover that I did not see on the chrome. Is this right or is it a crap shoot as to which design you get? thew 05-11-2004, 02:55 PM no thats the prototype it will be excatly like mine .. PHA RX-8 05-12-2004, 11:46 AM I installed the chrome fuel door last night on a tit grey. I will post pics this evening when I get home. I am having one problem though; before I close the fuel door all seems centered, but when I actually close the door, it pulls the door to the right. I haven't figured out how to correct this. Any suggestions. RX4+30Years=RX8 05-12-2004, 01:34 PM Originally posted by PHA RX-8 I installed the chrome fuel door last night on a tit grey. I will post pics this evening when I get home. Any suggestions. Send it to me and I'll check it out on my Ti gray. Well you asked for a suggestion....:D Sounds like you need to realign the latch though. Can't wait for the pics.:( thew 05-12-2004, 03:50 PM as i said in the PM to you.. the latch mech on the car is adjustable.. you can loosin the nust holding the pop mech and fove it around a little.. also make sure the hing side is flush witht he surface of the fender before you tighten the screws.... After that you can also bend out the tab on the fuel door to help push it back... But I did not have to do this. I think u need to adjust the door mech on the car first.. let me know how this works PHA RX-8 05-12-2004, 04:39 PM Thanks will do. RX4+30Years=RX8 05-13-2004, 10:46 AM Originally posted by thew no thats the prototype it will be excatly like mine .. Darn. I really like the hinge detail. I wonder how hard it would be to make a cover for the original fuel door out of sheet aluminum with the hinge detail on it and attach it with double stick tape or rivits or screws. Just need to make it thin enough to wrap arount the edge of the original for the full look and may have to adjust the original inward to allow for the thickness. Just a thought. RX-8Dad 05-15-2004, 04:04 PM sounds to me like it wouldn't be worth the time considering such an inexpensive mod. If it didn't look right, you could end up screwing up the finnish on the original cap, you end up buying the new one anyway. PHA RX-8 05-15-2004, 04:52 PM Here is my Tit grey with the chrome fuel door. As you can see it is off centered to the right. Still working on correcting thew 05-15-2004, 04:56 PM you can most deffanlty fix that .. it will have a smaller gap however on the no hinghed side.. thats just the way it has to be to clear the hinged side. Yeah, I could mess up the finish on the original fuel door, but then I would have an excuse to either have it chromed or fabricate a real aluminium fuel door or buy the fake one as you suggest. The possibilities are limitless. Isn't it invigerating. RX-8Dad 05-15-2004, 06:20 PM Sounds like you enjoy doing the work. Me, I get frustrated easily, I like doing the installs, I even do pretty well at designing, but when it comes to the actual fabrication, I'd rather leave it to the professionals. Of course as you like building, I can see where the attraction is. I don't have that kind of confidence in my craftsmanship. But hey, if you decide to do it I'd like to see some pics so I can see how it turns out :) SMigneco 05-15-2004, 07:22 PM Looks great and thanks for the pics/DYI. 2 days ago I installed the fender strakes on my silver 8 and they look incredible. What a great mod for the money. I bought them from Rosenthal Mazda for an unbeatable price. They really make the car look even more sporty (if that is possible.) I am seriously considering doing the fuel door mod but am unsure what finish to get. Rosenthal Mazda's website says you can get chrome or pearl satin finishes but I am having a hard time deciding. I have zero chrome on the car now so I think the pearl satin would look better. What do you guys think? Does anyone have any pics of a silver 8 with the gas lid mod? thew 05-15-2004, 08:39 PM satin is ok but it looks like it is dirty to me.. the chrome exhust finisher are the other chrome item on my 8 so i dont mind it at all .. theres a pic of the satin on a car here .. just search for it soon to have the dark chrome wheels from mazda thew 05-16-2004, 03:39 AM this door is also availabil .. seenit on some Japan parts sites.. But hey, if you decide to do it I'd like to see some pics so I can see how it turns out :) Well I mainly work with wood but have done a few things with metals and fiberglass. I can do it, but like everyone else that has a full time job and kids (6 in my case) finding the time is the trick. Whatever I decide to do when I find the time to do it will be posted with pics for the fuel door DIY.:) thew 05-16-2004, 02:33 PM hey rx4+ buy the door i posted above here and cut out the center depression.. make that into the opening.. its got to be easyer than starting from scratch Kel Rx8 05-16-2004, 03:59 PM i ordered mine last week and cant wait pixs look great guys. i will try to get some pixs of mine after i get my wheels put back on. 310Guy 09-05-2004, 11:20 AM After that you can also bend out the tab on the fuel door to help push it back... But I did not have to do this. I think u need to adjust the door mech on the car first.. What does this mean? I'm having the same problem as PHA RX-8: my fuel door is off-center. I spent an hour yesterday trying to make it straight... :( PHA RX-8 09-05-2004, 12:06 PM Join the club. Mine is still off center and I have run out of patience to fix it. If anyone has some good advice, I'm all ears. thew 09-05-2004, 02:42 PM you guys are not adjustiing the door right. First loosen all the screws that hold it on.. when there loose enough to move when pushed close the door up and slide it around where you want it. the pop open the door and tighten the screws. Then you will need to loosen the latch on the car. ITs the nut that goes around the pop out device that opes the door. You will need to loosen the nut that holds that latch and push the whole thing up and in . Then tighten it . This will make the door sit where it is supposed to when closed. IT will take a few tries to get it right. RotrDoc 01-23-2006, 06:25 PM I pulled this old thread up on a search today, since I'm considering finally putting on the chrome gas door. I don't see any photos!!! I know they were posted originally and that the entire thread was later moved into the DIY forum. Can someone help me get the originals back or provide photos of their installation?? Thanks in advance, guys. Asmoran 01-24-2006, 08:20 AM Attempting to fix pictures zoom44 01-24-2006, 11:22 AM pics are there now for me RotrDoc 01-24-2006, 11:57 AM Thanks, guys. The photos are fixed. I am disappointed, however, that the new door does not include a trim ring around the opening (like on the Miata SE). Bad, sloppy me chipped the paint on the rim with careless handling of the gas spigot one day. Jeager76 02-06-2006, 09:00 PM Odd, I installed this but after using the wrench the two screws that connect the door to the car don't tighten very tightly, I can still keep wrenching it (especially the bottom screw (the one through the grounding wire). They should tighten all the way right so they can't be turned anymore? Whats going on? marvin_rock 02-16-2006, 03:24 PM So I geuss I'm the only one who did it backwards and got rid of my chrome thingie and put stock color back on. Note to anyone thinking about it, chrome does NOT go well with the yellow (I bought it that way :( ) dannobre 02-16-2006, 03:31 PM Odd, I installed this but after using the wrench the two screws that connect the door to the car don't tighten very tightly, I can still keep wrenching it (especially the bottom screw (the one through the grounding wire). Whats going on? wrong size screw?...go back to stock ones if you can...or stripped out holes...have to get slightly bigger screws ( self tapping) |
