View Full Version : I Robot.....the movie
Rotary Nut 04-28-2004, 07:40 AM Well considering that when this book by Asimov came out it changed the the sci fi world it is about time that someone has decided to bring this Sci Fi classic to the big screen.
I Robot web site and trailer! (http://www.irobotmovie.com/)
The trailer lookes great but they go thru the three laws of robotics as invented by Asimov (and used to this day) but (I think) they got the last one wrong.
1. A robot may not harm a human being
2. A robot must obey their human master.
3. A robot may protect it's self except where it will conflict with rule #1.
The trailer only says that rule #3 is that a robot may protect it's self. Spark up another one for artistic licence!
Here's a brief synopsis....
Will Smith stars in this action thriller suggested by the classic short story collection by Isaac Asimov, and brought to the big screen by dynamic and visionary director Alex Proyas ("Dark City," "The Crow"). In the year 2035, robots are an everyday household item, and everyone trusts them, except one, slightly paranoid detective (Smith) investigating what he alone believes is a crime perpetrated by a robot. The case leads him to discover a far more frightening threat to the human race. "I, ROBOT" uses a spectacular, state-of-the-art visual effects technique to bring a world of robots to life.
Always an Asimov fan!!!!I heard it is more of an acting job for WS- rather than pure action, but I always thought he was great in Six Degrees of Separation- so I anxiously await this movie!
flatso 04-28-2004, 07:50 AM They had the trailer showing at the NY Auto Show in the Audi area, I guess that Audi cars are featured in it. It definitely looked good.
Rotary Nut 04-28-2004, 07:53 AM Thare was a car in the back ground in the trailer near the end. Very futuristic looking. I wonder if it was an Audi of the future.
Rotary Nut 04-28-2004, 07:58 AM Yes I just viewed the trailer at the site. It was different than the Yahoo trailer (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808461629&cf=trailer&intl=us) . In one scene towards the end there is a shot of Will Smith driving a car and you can see the steering wheel and it does have the Audi logo on it!
Genom 04-28-2004, 07:59 AM I imagine Asimov is spinning in his grave so fast right now you could probably power a good chunk of Texas.
I saw the trailers and was ready to cry :(
Hate to see a book based on story turned into a crappy looking action flick.
We where just talking about this in the worst movie thread too.

Yahoo Trailer (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808461629&cf=trailer&intl=us)
mental pimp 04-28-2004, 08:12 AM I give up, this computer has restrictions so i doubt i can watch the trailer, and i tried in Yahoo and its asking for me to upgrade the Windows Media Player, if i get caught doing so, ill get in trouble, ill watch it when i get home, stupid school computers...
Saint_Spinner 04-28-2004, 11:30 AM I actually my friend designed that Audi. Originally the production designers wanted a more futuristic design ala Minority Report Lexus, but Audi said: "Nope. If you want us to design a car for your movie, it has to tie in with our current or future designs" Basically they wanted it to look similar to their Le Mans concept so it kind of acts as free advertising for when that car finally makes it into production.
Xyntax 04-28-2004, 02:48 PM First time I saw the trailor, I thought to myself "Is this the prequel to The Matrix?" Anyone saw the Animatrix and their episodes? It's very similar to the story in "I Robot" right?
RX-Nut 04-28-2004, 04:13 PM Yup.. the themes are very similiar. I believe that is where the Wachowski's got some ideas..
Genom 04-28-2004, 04:24 PM It's similar to the movie, NOT the book. I dont think the Animatrix was really influenced by Asimov. I think it takes it's inspiration from other evil machine story's.

wakeech 04-28-2004, 04:31 PM yeah, this movie is going to be a real peice of crap. unbelievably disappointing. i hope they don't turn a profit.
Rotary Nut 04-28-2004, 04:52 PM Think positive thoughts........ think posit..........ah just screw it!
mental pimp 04-28-2004, 05:19 PM I just saw the trailer, c'mon its not that bad, looks good
Rotary Nut 04-28-2004, 05:34 PM I like it because I like all Sci-Fi.
pelucidor 04-28-2004, 05:46 PM Firstly Isaac Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" are:
#1 A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
#2 A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
#3 A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
A cookie to the first person to quote the zeroth law.
Secondly, based on the trailer, this movie has nothing to do with any Robot story (past, present or future) set in Asimov's universe. It should have been called "Will Smith VS The Robots". Of course that won't stop me from enjoying it.
