Well, I just unpacked my Veilside V1 body kit. I've did a quick fitment check on it, and it is a beautiful fit! I will be posting pics before and after painting for those who are interested in seeing the kit.

Ok, I know this will probably disappoint some of you, but I'm not going to have any pre-painted pics. I already test fitted the kit without my camera nearby, and I already dropped the kit off at my paint shop. I just got too excited! I've been doing this work for a long time, and this lip kit fit better than ANY I've ever seen. No cutting, no trimming, no problems. I'm using factory mounting locations in a couple spots, and only making holes where I absolutely have to.

The kit is heavy grade, and of the highest quality. Cosmetically, it wasn't my first choice, or even my second. But, the price is right on the V1, and it requires little or no modification to install.

I'm told I'll have the kit done and painted by Friday. I will most likely be installing the kit on Saturday. I'll post pics then, including installation tips.

From what I've been told this kit is one of the first twelve to come to the US, so I'm pretty pumped up about it.

Ok, I'm got the kit back today and installed it with no problems. It took me about 2.5 hours, and that was fooling around alot. Here are some pics I just took. They may not be the best pics, but I wanted to post quickly. Overall, I'm pleased with it. Like I said, it really isn't my first choice in kits, but it was affordable, decent looking, good quality, and easy to install.

So you installed the whole kit yourself?

did it come with instructions? Do-able by just one person?

What tools needed?

lol im full of questions :p

mdw33333
04-29-2004, 10:12 PM
I did the whole kit myself, except for a helping hand from one of my installers to help hold some pieces in place while I mounted them. I had the kit prepared and painted, as it came in just bare urethane. I used all stainless steel mounting screws and speed clips. I only made a couple of hole in metal where absolutely necessary. The kit came with no mounting hardware and no mounting instructions, but it was a no-brainer.

I haven't decided on selling my rear rotary accent yet. I might hold on to it.

Preparing the kit for paint consists of cleaning it and scuff sanding it. I have relatives that own one of the best body shops in this area, and they painted it for me. They did me a big favor and only charged me $200. I have less than $1200 total invested in this kit. Some may say it's ugly, but I'm pretty content with it, considering what I spent.

I may lower the car eventually, although it is at stock height right now. I'm considering the Tein S-tech springs.

NOTE:

There is a problem with the exhaust openings in the rear bumper section of the V1 kit. If you're using an aftermarket exhaust (Borla) with tips larger than stock, the openings in the V1 rear section aren't quit enlarged enough, and the exhaust gases burn the the area just above the exhaust tips. The heat is greater on the passnger side outlet, so the burn is worse on that side. It burnt through the paint, and nearly through the urethane after just one day of driving. I'm pretty pissed to say the least.

I have a temporary fix for this, but it's cosmetically unacceptable. I bought some adhesive backed, metallic heat shield tape from Autozone. It comes in a kit that is used to repair holes in exhaust pipes or mufflers. I cut a couple small sections of it and "stuck" it on the top portions of the exhaust openings. It sticks well as the adhesive is reasonably strong, but it just looks like crap. It has temporarily solved the problem, as it is effectively block the heat even to prevent further burning.

I'm wishing now that I hadn't sold my exhaust finishers, because I would have "customized" them to fit into this area and prevent the burning. They would have looked better too. I have taken a pic that shows what I did. The pic was taken with the camera resting against the floor, angled up. When standing up you can't even see the tape, unless you bend down.

I'll come up with some type of heat shield or possibly extend the exhaust tips out further by adding pipe in behind them. I hate to do that because I like they way they look inside the openings now.

Also, anyone interested in this kit should make another note. Make sure to double layer the areas on the kit that have the 3M double sided tape. The single layer that Veilside provides IS NOT enough and the kit comes loose from where it rests against the body.

I'll snap some tonight and post them. It's pretty close to the top. The rep at Veilside is having me e-mail him pics of the problem, and I'm hoping they'll do something about it.

Well, I just spoke with my rep at Veilside. He said he would send me a new rear section for my kit. They just got this kit in and already they are out of them, so I'll have to wait until June for the new rear piece. I'm going to make some "adjustments" in the mean time. I may lower the exhaust a bit to keep it away from the top edge of the bumper cover, or I may see if the bumper cover can be raised a bit. Either way, I have got some "rigging" to do.

Yeah, it does suck. I made an "adjustment" to my exhaust today by heating the hangers just behind the exhaust tips. By heating them, I was able to bend them downward slightly. I now have about 3/4" between the exhaust tip and the top edge of the bumper cover. This "should" be enough. I'm going to peel off the protective tape that I put on, and see what happens.

Tomorrow, I'll post before and after pics of my exhaust adjustment for those who have the Borla exhaust and who want the V1 kit.

When their new stock comes in in June, you think they will make the corrections on them? Also may i suggest red calipers to mdw? It will look good

What if you lined the exhaust port with a transparent heat shield? That would probably save the bumper from further damage and look alot better than the silver foil.

I totally agree, however, I don't know of anything transparent that will work. I have scraps of Venture Shield film (Clear Bra) here at the shop, but it doesn't hold up to intense heat. I'm open to suggestions.

I was just wondering... after getting the body kit is it possible to get something like the exhaust finisher (factory accesory option)
then wouldnt that solve the problem? Or is this just not possible?

Is the bumper a full bumper or does it just replace the rear diffuser and wrap around the rest of the stock bumper?

it just wraps around the stock bumper

Imo add 1/2"- 3/4" to the pipe and the tip'd clear,no problem.
You might need longer tips if you extend the pipe, though.

I thought about extending the tips outward for more clearance, but I really like the way they set back inside the cover. I've since dropped the exhaust down about a 1/2"-3/4" and I think it has solved the problem. I just haven't had time to post pics of the adjustment. I will, as soon as I can.

Well Mike, it looks that way. I was given the "impression" that they didn't think anything was "wrong" with their rear valance. They pretty much blamed it on the exhaust. I really don't care all that much anymore. I made an adjustment (one that I shouldn't have had to make), and I think it'll be fine once I get the new rear piece.

I do this stuff for a living and it's very frusterating when everything I try to do to my own car becomes a pain in the ass. First my problems with the Stage 1, and now this. I'm pretty much "burned-out" on modding my car right now. I'm gonna fix this "issue" with the body kit and leave it alone after that.

Relentless
