View Full Version : Mazdaspeed Front Bumper Grill Material?
djmano 04-26-2004, 02:17 PM hey guys.....i know there are alot of people out there with the Mazdaspeed front bumper installed. i know quite a few people have chosen to use different style/material color mesh to fill in the holes of the kit and protect oil cooler and radiator.
however, im looking specifically for where i can purchase this kind of mesh.
http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26649
i want the exact same material, pattern, and color. to me it looks the best out of any of the other mesh grills so far. it also looks the cleanest. for some reason i have a feeling that that is the mesh provided with the authentic mazdaspeed kit front japan. does anybody know where i would be able to purchase this style of mesh grill?
Spin9k 04-26-2004, 02:21 PM I don't see any mesh there. Just see black - void - nada. What mesh are you looking for?
PUR NRG 04-26-2004, 02:36 PM In case you weren't aware, MS grill is plastic coated metal.

djmano 04-26-2004, 02:59 PM i wasnt aware of that........but that doesn't answer any of the questions i posed initially.
spink9k......look very closely. you might see some black stuff in a honeycomb weave design. if you still can't see it than maybe a trip to the optometrist is in order.....
PUR NRG 04-26-2004, 03:09 PM Did I give you the impression I was directly answering your question? You weren't sure what "authentic MS mesh from japan" was like so I provided that part of the puzzle.
When asking for assistance I'd advise not insulting people trying to help. I'm referring to the optometrist comment.

I DO see an optometrist, but it's not my fault that your ref pic has poor shadow detail. Maybe somebody can help you now...
adrian-1 04-26-2004, 06:40 PM Here's a picture I had. Not much better.
I have ordered some mesh from http://www.grille-tech.com/ .
It's the black diamond cut type for $45. Should arrive at my house today. It's a nice pattern and powdercoated black metal. I ordered the biggest piece (middle part of the f-150) and plan to cut it up to fit the middle part of the bumper, the 2 oil coolers openings, and if I still have enough the bottom of the bumper.
djmano 04-27-2004, 01:36 AM adrian.....the stuff from grille tech you ordered is probably the best bet as far as mesh material goes. im sure the metal is fairly sturdy and the black powdercoat finish will leave a clean look.
only gripe i have about it is the price. $45 seems a bit steep. anybody wanna share mesh? :) :) :)
adrian-1 04-27-2004, 02:31 AM The grille tech mesh came in. It's thicker and more durable than the MS mesh that I saw in person. It's very hard to cut, you'll need a dremel or garden sheers (worked for me), no wire cutters or saws worked. Pretty sharp edges!
I spray painted my rebar black but ran into some problems when I was done installing the mesh and tried to fit the bumper back on. I didn't notice the rebar was molded to the inside bumper and I left some mesh hanging out on the sides. So rebar came off and I'll have to dremel the sides of the mesh and reinstall the rebar in a couple of weeks.
Drilled into the bumper and then zip tied the mesh thru the holes. Very sturdy, powder coating looks great, won't be rubbing off. I only had enough for the middle section and both oil cooler openings, the bottom will have to wait. I looks similiar to the MS but alittle smaller openings and thicker lines. Here's some pics. Daytime pics in a couple of days.

djmano 04-27-2004, 01:29 PM nice writeup adrian. the mesh looks very close to the MS stuff thanks for blazing the trail for all.
btw your ride is sick.....when i first saw the k's burnout front lip in option mag months agoi almost drooled all over myself. safe to say it looks even better on a black 8! if you hooked it up with the mint blue rear carbon fiber spoiler (which you inquired about in the 1st year mazda thread) then you're ride would be jdm goodness.
adrian-1 04-27-2004, 02:13 PM Yeah, my 8 is almost done as far as looks. Next will be increased power.

Omicron 07-18-2004, 02:53 AM Adrian, looking at this last picture, it looks like you can see the attachment points along the bottom - four of them. Am I right, or is that just bug guts?
Looks great man! :D
adrian-1 07-18-2004, 07:04 AM Yes, those are the zip ties. I actually cut those off and redid them. They are not visible anymore plus I raised the plastic below that so it doesn't look like it's hanging anymore.
AeroWerksOnline 07-18-2004, 03:42 PM Looks good!
r0tor 07-18-2004, 04:10 PM I wish someone would really produce a mesh kit for the oil coolers that attaches to the back of the bumper (unlike RB). Man my oil coolers are starting to look rough.
...i tried making one for my old probe and actually wound up scarthcing the bejesus out or it trying to fit it so I'm pretty reluctant to try it again.

I'm in the process of doing that very soon. It will attach to the fog light strakes, though. Only Fog Light Strakes will be available first then when I have that going, I will work on one for the RX-8s that have no fog lights..
ranger4277 07-18-2004, 05:59 PM Just mount the mesh to the oil cooler shroud mounting tabs (2 on the top, one on the bottom). Use somewhat pliable mesh so you can bend 90 degree lips on the top and bottom to screw the mesh into the holes in the tabs and you're set. If you measure it out right you'll have about 1/4" clearance between the cooler and the mesh, and the mesh will slip behind the fog lamp and not need trimming. I had this arrangement for months (have MS front now) and it worked great. The mesh was taut and everything just bounced off. I used black aluminum mesh from a craft store. The potential downside to this is you must remove the front bumper to install it, but it isn't THAT hard. I posted instructions once in the oil cooler thread and a couple photos.
You don't need to buy a solution for this when it is very simple to do yourself. Chances are doing it yourself will be a better solution anyway.
r0tor 07-18-2004, 06:24 PM D MENAC 7 - definately give me a heads up when your done (I have fog lights)
ranger4277 - I know they are not that hard to do... like I tried to say above (just noticed the really bad spelling) last time I did them it just didn't look right and I ended up messing my car up pretty good building the prototype. Plus I don't have mush free time on my hands anymore.
bumper removal - I've been there and done that already to install the front air dam
Tony Orlando 07-18-2004, 07:50 PM There are already stanchions on the back of the bumper aurrounding the oil cooler openings. All you need to do is cut some mesh, then use self-tapping screws with washers to attach it. The result looks like this:
D MENAC 7 07-18-2004, 09:42 PM Yeah, I have found the two that are there, they attach the top part of the grille just fine but there isn't really a good place to attach the bottom part to. The other problem with those mounting points is that they do not line up with the rear of the fog light. This means you get the rough screening line that is at the edge of the lamp as you can see in your picture, this makes it appear unfinished in that area. Otherwise it is tucked away behind the front cover. What I am going to attempt to do is fabricate something that will finish that side of the mounting edge and possibly frame the rear part of the nose while allowing the attachment of the screening material.
tokenbrit 07-27-2004, 12:07 PM You would have thought that somebody would be making this by now. There IS a market for replacement grille's and oil cooler covers (as there aren't any of these ;) ).
Anybody know of any manufacturers that are doing this?

Anybody know of any manufacturers that are doing this? :cool:In the very process of designing and soon to be producing right now. I would estimate about a month or so for the front grille and maybe 2 weeks for the oil cooler screen and front fog light strakes. Waiting for molding material to come in later this week to get the process of finshed design and test model going.
tokenbrit 07-28-2004, 05:20 AM Cool. I assume you are going to use some kind of powder back steel mesh (similiar to the Mazdaspeed grille? ). Have you thought about doing replacement side vents to match too? :p
Please keep me updated. I am sure you are onto a winning product if the demand is as great as this forum might suggest. :D

I am thinking that an eventual redesign of the side vent to something similar to this is in order. Either this with screening or without. As far as the screening goes, my plans are to offer black aluminum or leave it as a bright aluminum. I'm a fan of aluminum screening since there is no worry about rusting. Stainless steel would be nice but it is too expensive.
davefzr 08-04-2004, 02:19 AM Hey Adrian or anyone..... Do you have the MazdaSpeed front fender? If so.. why does it look different than this one...
http://www.rotaryextreme.com/msrx8.jpg
I noticed that your car has an opening underneath the front fender where the stock rotary symbol is but in the picture I posted that is not there...
Why is it different?
thankx...
adrian-1 08-04-2004, 01:05 PM I do not have the mazdaspeed front bumper. Mine is the stock bumper with the Ks-autio burnout front lip.
davefzr 08-04-2004, 01:57 PM uhhh.. that would explain it..
thankx
