Question used rx8?

do u guys think getting a used rx8 is a good/bad idea?

they cost a lot less but there's no way of knowing if the owner did a good job taking care of the car, and i'm especially worried since the engine requires more care...

I'm looking at one with 900 miles and every option available even in my color except for interioir. I think it's a great way to save some money and it is still under warranty if anything should go wrong.

I don't think it's a good idea for two reasons:

1) You don't know what was done to the car under the previous owner. The 8 is a sports car after all. At least I would check car fax to see if anything happened to it.

2) I hope the 8 hasn't depriciated in value that much, so to save a couple grand when the car costs $30K - I don't think it's worth it over the long haul, especially with the point in #1. But hey, if you can save something like 10 grand - go for it.

3) I don't believe the 8 has a particularly long warranty, now you lose out on the time from when it was purchased.

Heck, I didn't even want any miles on my car from the dealer.

My dealer had an RX-8 that was stolen from the lot and found some miles away abandoned. It had damage to one of the front rims where it had apparently hit a curb. They dealer traded that stolen RX-8 for mine. Before they drove the car to Cinci, the took the rim from another 8 on the lot and put it on the one they were trading. I watched them do the swap.

I feel sorry for the person who bought the black RX8 GT AT in Cincinnati. But then again, I have no idea what my car went thru at the Cinci dealership.

My next new car purchase will be directly from the truck....I'll watch them take it off myself.....

I've had good luck with used RX-7's (three). It's a great savings on depreciation, but like you say, you don't know how the previous owner treated the car. Do a CARFAX and if anything looks suspicious, have a mechanic check it out for you.

The 8 has depriciated alot, thanks to dealers in our area who are already discounting them $2500 below invoice, ( they have 33 of them sitting on their lot) and offering 0% financing. Who is going to buy used when you can get new for less than we paid, and better financing? The 0% financing thing has slautered the used car market for everyone.

I'd say stay away especially if the car was a dealer demo. Too many clowns trying to explore the redline on a car that hasn't been broken in.

Where is this?? I think that may be the case with MTs, but because there is a lesser supply of ATs they still go for invoice or above invoice price.

What evidence do you have of this? I've been keeping an eye on used ones to check for depreciation and found two things - there aren't many for sale and they aren't much less in cost than new ones.

people who look at ebay auctions assume that an auction ending at 22k means the guy bought it at 22k. In fact, the auctions almost always have reserve prices, and unless the car ends with a high price, it is seldom sold.

I also track used car prices through various venues - and so far the dealers (non-mazda) who have RX8's for sale are NOT discounting them much from list.

The warranty is actually a 4 year warranty - I think that's pretty good, especially with the roadside assistance, which RX8Club members have reported works VERY WELL.

Depending on the deal, a used RX8 could be a good buy.
