moRotorMotor 04-19-2004, 01:53 PM I have trouble reading out telephone numbers in cantonese, even if I know it like the back of my hand in english. Cantonese is my mother tongue, but I was born and raised in Toronto. I know many friends that no longer know how to speak their own language and that is a shame. :o I guess the reason I still use both fluently is because my mom doesn't understand english that much so it forces me to remember it.
The real weakness that I have is that I am illiterate. I would like to learn how to read but it's just too much remembering lol :p .
Genom 04-19-2004, 01:57 PM I learned both english and spanish at the same time, so I tend to think in them the most. I flip flop between them. I can still read italian and french no problem, and my portuguese is pretty decent. But english spanish are the oens I think with. Now, even so I do ocasionaly forget how to say one word in one language but can remember in the other, but it happens a lot less now than when I was a kid.
hotpot 04-19-2004, 02:07 PM I only understand bit pieces of chinese, and I always have to mentally translate in French or Creole (my mostly used languages) to make sense of it. But I can switch between French, English and Creole without problem.
NB There are a lot of Chinese on this forum. The RX8 is a rice car?
guy321 04-19-2004, 02:09 PM I'm in the same boat as you.. I also speak cantonese.. and toisan

moRotorMotor 04-19-2004, 02:46 PM My grandparents also speak toisan wa! lol My friends don't know a word we are saying, when we talk, but I understand for the most part, everything they are saying lol What a coicidence. This is so cool.
MadRonin 04-19-2004, 02:50 PM I learned english and hebrew at the same time. As such I am pretty good at reading things backwards since you read hebrew right to left.
I've been trying to learn japanese for the last ten years, but it's been slow going.
OdDbaLL0789 04-19-2004, 02:58 PM Well, once I was giving out information to a receptionist, and she asked me, what church I went to, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't remember! I was thinking in english, while the name is in Portuguese....funny....
I felt real dumb at the time, but after I thought it was funny...
Winning_BlueRX8 04-19-2004, 03:02 PM I'm monolingual, and I think in English. Hope this helps
guy321 04-19-2004, 03:04 PM Thanks for clearing that up.. now can you help with this rash??

Shit another chinaman! :)
Meowloud 04-19-2004, 03:20 PM IMO
If you are of particular race or sex, talking about yourself has been socially acceptable (i.e., Wassup Nig, from me: hey Bitc*, etc.) This doesn't make it OK, but it has been traditionally accepted in the near past.
I would just rather not feed the stereotypes if it were me though.

A lot of Chinese people love motorsports (especially in HK and Macau), love spirited driving, appreciate a finely engineered/designed car, and are car enthusiasts. I don't see how that makes the RX-8 a rice car.
hotpot 04-19-2004, 03:27 PM ANOTHER ONE? WTF?
Speed-ER doc 04-19-2004, 03:34 PM This guy is bilingual.
Meowloud 04-19-2004, 03:44 PM That's just CREEPY!!!

Yeah, I translate afterwards. I mean I can do it both ways but for some reason I prefer to count in Spanish. Weird
