View Full Version : What Kind of Music Do You Listen To?
cueball 02-12-2003, 04:02 PM The title says it all. Plus I am interested in new bands and music. I figure I will get a pretty good diversity of music here. I like almost all kinds of music. My favs are Punk, alternative, ska, reggae, and rock in general. I'm not the biggest fan of rap, but some of it is O.K. My favorite bands are Sublime, Rancid, Operation Ivy, Goldfinger, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Jimmy Hendrix, Green Day, MXPX, Nofx, Puddle of Mud, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, The Hives, and The Vines. The list goes on, but there are just too many bands to list and I know I forgot a ton. So lets here some of yours.
I listen to EVERYthing, but today's work BG music selection is Paul Oakenfold, Timo Maas, and Thievery Corporation -- all electronic today.
justinm2 02-12-2003, 06:50 PM i'm all about the rock, there are some really good bands just making their break through, Ill Nino, Reville, breaking benjamins, blindside, cky, etc.. Most of them have been kind of underground bands until just recently
lefuton 02-12-2003, 07:01 PM i've lately gotten into jazz and old stuff like duke ellington, count basie, ella fitzgerald and some new stuff like stacey kent, that norah jones person is doing well on radio as well.
i still listen to lots of soundgarden and lust pollution
jonny b 02-12-2003, 07:05 PM favorite band is sublime. i like red hot chili peppers and nirvana and most rock to. system of a down is good to even though i dont get some of their stuff. i listen to some jazz, just when im being lazy and have nothing to do. cant think of others right now
wakeech 02-12-2003, 09:30 PM i like everything that i like... music with a message, music with a vision, music with a melody...
it's even better when the "artist" (some are more deserving than others of this title, i believe) really means it, and is trying hard to create and express...
anyhoo, for this immediate second, i love Broken Social Scene (they're from the big TO boyos) Broken Social Scene's Big Page (http://www.arts-crafts.ca)
uh, let's see... mainstream stuff is alrightish, but usually sucks... and i almost never buy it....
uhhhh, Jesse Cook (http://www.jessecook.com) absolutely rocks...
hmmm... just check out New Music Canada (http://www.newmusiccanada.com) to find tons of stuff that i have/do already/will love...
:D
evel333 02-13-2003, 12:11 AM J-Pop...almost exclusively.

i have no idea!! :D where can i hear them??
btw, all the songs BSS has are hearable on the site: click on the album name (Feel Good Lost, or You Forgot It In People) and there is a list of RealPlayer links that you can play, which are all their recorded songs (which they never play in concert...??? :D)
73JPS 02-13-2003, 01:31 AM CueBall: Since you seem to have eclectic tastes, and have listed bands which have some edge to much of their sound, try checking out a late 1970's band from Toronto (who never made it big in the States, too bad) known as Max Webster. One of my all time favorites, theirs will be the first sounds out my RX8's stereo...
RX-3_13B_Tommo 02-13-2003, 04:30 AM I guess because of my age I have probably a more diverse interest than any of you so here are the things on my MP3 list:
Pantera
Black Sabbath
Ozzy Osbourne
KISS
Rage Against The Machine
Smashing Pumpkins
U2
Iron Maiden
Cradle Of Filth
Judas Priest
Dio
AC/DC
Audioslave
Barry White
The Beatles
BeeGees
Blue Oyster Cult
Dire Straits
Golden Earring
Guns n' Roses
Isaac Hayes
James Brown
Jimmi Hendrix
Pink Floyd
Queen
Chili Peppers
Rob Zombie
Roy Orbison
Soundgarden
Nirvana
James Taylor
Stillwater
Ted Nugent
Van Halen
Van Morrison
Otis Redding
Led Zeppelin
BB. King
So there, I guess that comes from growing up in the 90's with sisters from the 80's and a father from the 50's!

MattFast 02-13-2003, 10:41 AM I like all kinds of music. From Pop to Rock, from Trance to R&B
Favorites bands/singers:
Lifehouse, Stereophonics, Sugababes, Robbie Williams, Blue, and Coldplay
Elara 02-13-2003, 06:39 PM Well, I went to the opera Tuesday, I've got tickets to a broadway musical next week, and I usually listen to NPR at work.
I also like bluegrass, and used to go to local festivals all the time. And I'm suddenly developing a taste for Zydeco.
I also love "classic" rock and 80's pop. And my favorite singer of all time is Loreena McKennitt.
BUT..at home, we usually listen to europop and eurotrance, like Erazor, Kate Ryan, Voodoo and Serano, and Paul Oakenfold.
RX-3_13B_Tommo 02-14-2003, 04:18 AM Rock/Pop
Yeah, lets go through this
Metal
Heavy Metal
Goth Rock
Alternative
Blues
Soul
easy listening
grunge
and that is supposed to be just rock and POP, mostly rock, but POP never.

I'm with you on those two, and the Verve, though I am only partial to Bittersweet Symphony and that's about it. I suggest the new Coldplay CD, it's well done, and quite original.
I like just about everything, the two exceptions being Country, and Jazz.
The breadth of my mp3 collection is indicitive of this. Rammstein, Enya, Samuel Barber, Alphaville, Coldplay, Sigur Rós, Blue Man Group, Louie DeVito, Moby, Quarashi, Weezer, VNV Nation, Madonna, Kottonmouth Kings, George Winston, and Erasure are but a few of the artists present in my playlist.
Digisan 02-15-2003, 03:30 AM Here is a small slice:
Tool, top notch musicians, no, incredible
Kyuss, very heavy, I think they tune down to B
Frank Zappa

Jonatha Brooke and the Story
Default, solid, catchy band
NIN
Jean Luc Ponty, Imaginary Voyage, my favorite album from his catalog
Counting Crows
Alice in Chains
Arne Domnerus
Bela Fleck
Slayer, still keeping it real
Greatful Dead
Pharcyde
Beastie Boys
DMX
Wu-Tang Clan, including all solo albums
ODB, see above
C.O.C.
Brad
Satchel
Soundgarden
Gov't Mule
Allman Bros.
Led Zep, of course
Pink Floyd
Nixons
Max Roach
Jack Dejonette
Tommy Flanagan, he has some chops
Tony Levin
Terry Bozzio
RX-3_13B_Tommo 02-15-2003, 05:42 AM I only like two types of music:
Country
Western :D
RX-3_13B_Tommo 02-15-2003, 05:46 AM How can you say that the heavy and spinetingling riffs of Pantera are in the same group as to moody blues of Van Morrison?
Or that the inspiring vocal 4 octave range of Judas Priest, are the same as Barry White's low moans?
Or that Rage Against The Machine's politically influenced lyrics are in the same category as Roy Orbison?
Or that Jimi Hendrix's solos are the same as James Taylors?

How can you say that the heavy and spinetingling riffs of Pantera are in the same group as to moody blues of Van Morrison?... Because they are very similar compared to the rest of the music out there, popular or not.

BryanH 02-17-2003, 01:09 AM Guess I'll be the first to chime in here with a taste for progressive rock/metal. :) Groups like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Fates Warning, etc, really do it for me. Something a little different than your typical rock formula.

I like the sound a lot. It is a little different than what I usually listen to, but I like it nonetheless. I downloaded Battle Scar, Hang Over, and All We Are. If you have any other recommendations I will be glad to hear them due to the limited number of his songs on KaZaA.

Yeah, it was twenty years ago I first heard Max: I like many different types of music, from "classical" (plainsong to contemporary), jazz, and rock, from Jethro Tull to The Hives and even the latest thing from Eminem. Max Webster (actually the name of the band, not the guy) is one that I always come back to though, probably because even within their own sound there was so much variation and energy.
Here is a site with teasers (click "Sound Samples") for ALL of their songs. I guess from there u could pick some ones u like and try to find the full versions. For good teasers, try "Research (at Beach Resorts)" from A Million Vacations, and "Lip Service" from Mutiny Up My Sleeve. "Summer's Up" from Max Webster isn't bad either.
If you like prog rock (and 'something a little different from your typical rock formula' ... BryanH), you'll probably love Max... :D

A lot of good music has been put up here, but I gotta agree with digiscan...Tool is incredible. They seem to get better every album, and excellent driving music. I just hope Maynard doesn't go for the cash in APC full time. Don't forget Audioslave, Miles Davis, Gustav Holtz.
Sorry, Digisan
RX-3_13B_Tommo 02-19-2003, 01:33 AM Gotta say that I prefer RATM to Audioslave. http://ilovedeniro.homestead.com/files/dimebag.gif
