View Full Version : 3M protection, group rate anyone?
hobbes 03-30-2004, 11:24 AM I'll be getting my car in the next two weeks (March 29- April 10 2004). After getting some great advice on protecting the car for winter and regular paint chipping problems of the summer, ah those lovley summer rocks (let's face it, we're not going to drive the speed limit in the summer :D ) I'm planning to get the 3M 3M Scotchcal protection that many current owners have installed already.
I was thinking of getting a whole bunch of us to go in as a group, thus getting a "group rate". Perhaps those who need to get tinting done can join up with me as well. As for cost, well I'll be looking around these next two weeks, but if any of you have some reliable places and with really cheap costs, then of course we can all vote and go wherever.
I'm located in Richmond Hill (Major Mac and Bayview) I'll go pretty far to get things done for my car if the price is right, but let's try to keep it in the GTA at least :) (we all know how wonderful the car is on mileage ;) ). Reply here in the thread OR PM me. I will do what I can for a shecdule that will fit the majority in or talk with whoever we decide to work with for a bunch of us to go at a time.
Imagine that...a bunch of RX8's driving around in one area...people probably think there's a convention or something.
Anyway, if you think it's a good idea drop a line, if not...tell me why, if there are better solutions I wouldn't mind knowing.
:D
FYI I got this from the 3M site at http://cms.3m.com/cms/US/en/2-168/ckukRFO/view.jhtml
Q. How is Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film maintained?
A. Once applied, refrain from washing the vehicle in an automated car wash for 24 hours. Washing after that time presents no problem, and no special care need be taken for the film.
Q. Can I use wax over Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film?
A. Yes. When waxing the vehicle, some wax may build up along the film edges. This can easily be removed when dry with a soft brush such as an old toothbrush. Do not use any waxes containing dyes or waxes that are not recommended for urethanes. Abrasive polishes and/or rubbing compounds are not to be used.
Q. What products does 3M recommend to best maintain Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film?
A. 3M makes a variety of products to help maintain the beauty of your vehicle. 3M? Car Wash Soap (3M Part #39000), 3M? Show Car Paste Wax (3M Part #39526) and 3M? Perfect-It Show Car Liquid Wax (3M Part #39026). The best surface cloth to use is the 3M? Perfect-IT? III Detailing Cloth (3M Part #39016) since others may scratch the surface of the film.
Q. How is Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film removed?
A. If desired, film can be removed at any time by picking up a corner of the film and pulling the film off the vehicle surface from a 30 to 90-degree angle. If the film has been present a long time, or if the film and vehicle are cold, a heat gun or hair dryer may be used to soften the adhesive, allowing easier removal. If any adhesive remains on the vehicle after removal of the film, it can be removed by using 3M? General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (3M Part #08984 or 3M Part#08987), 3M? Woodgrain and Stripe Adhesive Remover (3M Part #08908) according to the package directions.
Q. If Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film is removed from the vehicle, can it be re-used?
A. Once the film has been applied and set, the adhesive will not stick a second time.
Q. After Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film has been removed, how do I get the adhesive off my vehicle?
A. If any adhesive remains on the vehicle after removal of the film, it can be removed by using 3M? General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (3M Part #08984 or 3M Part #08987), according to the package directions.
Q. What if Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film is installed incorrectly?
A. Contact your Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film Professional Applicator immediately.

CrackerJax 03-30-2004, 11:32 AM Hey, I was just waiting for someone to say something about this :) I wonder how many we'll need to get any kind of discount...
Well anyway, I'm in, managed to avoid any chips so far (knock on wood), so I'd like to take care of this soon.
MyRxBad 03-30-2004, 02:32 PM I'm thinking about getting mine done as well, but was thinking about the xpel product.
www.xpel.com
While they do have kits cut for the Rx-8, there is none for the canadian model, so the headlight washer will have to be freehanded.
If you find any good sources let me know.

Xpel uses the 3M Scotchcal film - what they add is the computer-cut template and the installer network.
The headlight washers are no big deal - my installer used the Xpel kit, and the headlight washer lids just pop off, he cut out the holes for the washers, snapped the lids back on, then put two tiny pieces of the Scotchcal film on the headlight washer lids.

S-AIR 03-31-2004, 12:13 PM I am very interested as well any price idea.....?? Thanks
AcuraEL 03-31-2004, 06:20 PM Add me to the list.
I am interested in a group buy if the price is right.
What is the price anyways??
Gord96BRG 03-31-2004, 09:20 PM Just one price sample, here's what I posted in the forum last August when I had the Xpel kit installed:
Just picked up the RX-8 - fabulous job. Pictures wouldn't be worthwhile, since you can not see the clear film! The rear edge on the hood is back about 20", so it should provide great protection.
FWIW, here's what the installed cost came to:
RX-8 Hood, fender, mirror: $260 Cdn, ~$186 US
RX-8 bumper kit: $270 Cdn, ~$192 US
Headlights and fog lights (custom fit) $79 Cdn, ~$56 US
Total for the paint/lights 3M film protection, installed: $609 Cdn, ~$435 US.
Oh, I also had the rear side windows and rear window tinted with XG film, 35% - $119 Cdn, ~$85 US. Looks great - pictures of that would be worthwhile, so maybe in the next few days...
Regards,
Gordon

ZoomZoomTO 04-05-2004, 08:25 AM Hi all,
Since a few people were inquring about tints, I thought I'd share my experience. Had my 8 tinted just over a week ago at Thornhill Tints in Richmond Hill.
Richard, the owner, is very straight forward and does a very good job. I was very pleased with the service and quality with no BS. Price was $200 (Includes lifetime warranty).
hobbes 04-05-2004, 09:30 AM Hi everyone,
I need to get a head count see what we can do for prices. Just post to the thread and tell me if you want a tint or 3M job, or both.
I've been talking to a few places over the weekend and will be getting some calls back in the next two days about the group rate. I will post the prices as I get them.
If you just got to this thread, not to worry, you can still join in, the more the better.
As for those who have friends that are driving other cars than 8's, I will see if they will get a discount on them, but we will need to see.
Be back with them quotes.

hobbes 04-13-2004, 10:02 AM Sorry for not getting back as soon as I wanted to. Here are two places that have the most competitive prices for the 3M that I have found:
SHIELDPRO
Hello Howard,
Here is the pricing for your car...
Hood/Fender/Mirror installed $240.00
Headlight/Fog Light $110.00
Bumper $260.00
Top 6" of roof $ 60.00

Prices include taxes. He is located in Oakville but will go to any place you wish for him to do your car, even to your home if you wish. He uses 3M for the body parts of the car but uses something else for the lights. The film for the lights come in different colours (blue, yellow, clear), but at the same price mentioned above.
I have spoken to John several times over the phone and have came up with a group discount of 10-20% (depending on how many of us will be doing to same body parts). He wishes for us to group up to get the work done (at least 3-4 of us at a time for the 10-20% discount). He's willing to meet us anywhere in the GTA (be it at a mall, someone's home, where ever). He only accepts cheques and cash, no credit cards.
For anyone who has got work done by them, please comment on their workmanship as this is a important factor for myself and others.
CHIP GUARD
Hood (6-8'') and Fender $250
Bumper $450
Hood (6-8") /Fender/Bumper Package$650
Side Mirrors $20-$25 (Depends how
many parts of the car you
get done.)
If you pay in cash, there's no tax. If you pay with anything else he'll give us a 20% discount but will charge us tax which works out to a 5% discount.
He's located at Yonge and Steeles. Unlike Shieldpro, he is not mobile and requires you to leave the car at his place as he works on it. You are welcome to stay and watch them work for half a day, as he told me over the phone. He only uses 3M materials, thus does not do the lights.
For anyone who has got work done by them, please comment on their workmanship as this is a important factor for myself and others.
If there are any other companies that have better pricing and workmanship please provide their name, prices and contact information. THANKS!

hobbes 04-13-2004, 10:10 AM For those interested in Tints...I will probably not start a thread since most places I have contacted can't do much on the price, so if you have know of others who want to get their car tinted ask them to come to this thread. Thanks.
I have found a place that a couple of people of mentioned to me through word of mouth and wish to know if you have heard anything good or bad about their work.
Cybercity Auto
RX8 Tints cost $190 including taxes.
They are located behind Markham Mazda. Lifetime warranty.
I am still negotiating with them to see if they can do better. So far we are working out at 10% discount for each car we bring in of the same type, but that is not confirmed yet. They use a German product.
If you know of any other company that can has a better price and workmanship, please provide their name, prices and contact information. THANKS!

Medical marijuana (http://mmjp.org)
Air Force RX8 04-13-2004, 05:05 PM I asked the guy at the collision center where my 8 is getting a nose job done about this and he advises against it. He said that the newer three stage paint that we have on the 8 needs to "breathe" to release particulates over time as the paint ages. This will supposedly result in a difference between the covered paint and exposed paint over time.
He advises against "overwaxing" as it also hinders the release of particulates and polymers. Use a carnauba based wax "twice a year...pre-summer and pre-winter" is his recommendation.
Just passing on HIS opinion on these two things, I do not claim to be an expert so please do not shoot me for this post. I will pass on the covering and continue to use my Meguiars Tech Wax once a month with claybar treatments.
hobbes 04-14-2004, 08:16 AM Sorry about this. I was just informed by John that the prices do NOT include taxes. Also the hood kit covers 20". Sorry once again for the mistake.

hobbes 04-14-2004, 02:28 PM More details on the tint from Cybercity Auto...
The type they use is LLUMAR (http://www.llumar.com/na-eng/Automotive/auto.html) . I'm not a tint expert so if any of you know if this is a good product, in the car it goes :D
They do the tints for the MPV club as the manager Benny tell me.
As for the price, here is whats happening..
$170/car taxes included if pay in cash. Booking is tight for time as the weather is getting better. Anyways, they can only do one car per day anyways.
I'm planning to do my car and my wife's Mazda 3 Sport there. If anyone is interested, please tell ASAP so I can give them your info to get that price instead of the $190-200 they were asking before.
Once again, if you know of a better place and with better pricing and product, I would be more than happy to look into it.

I had asked John from Shieldpro about dates and times etc. Here is his answer:
"Depends on he weather the week previous, we might call up the people and meet with them at their house after they finish work or we might go on Saturday morning. The cars have to be washed. Cash and cheque ok for the discount. If the weather keeps up like this, we can start next week. We would like to do the one guy who wants the hood/fender mirror first, then the bumper guy then the rest. I like to get the small jobs out of the way first. Hi hobbes, so tell us how your tint turned out?
What brand and product did you use?
Are there choices of brands and products?
I am unsure which one is good, metallic, ceramic... etc.
Can't wait to hear from you. Thanks.
hobbes 04-23-2004, 09:52 AM My tints...
They are Llumar ATR. You can check out their website (http://www.llumar.com/na-eng/Automotive/car-styler.html) for detail info.
Now that I have my tint, I don't feel too naked as I cruise the streets. For me, the 20% for the back is dark enough, but if you really want to go to the limo tints, you can, but night driving will be most interesting. My fronts 35%.
I met the tint installer and he's a happy go lucky guy and takes pride in his work. He wasn't happy with my driver side window and redid it twice at no extra charge. The inside of my car was the same as when I dropped it off.
So now I have to wait min. 4 days to open the windows, thank god for the sunroof, but will not open for a week or more if I can. They give 10 days to ensure everything is fine. If not they will redo anything that goes wrong. Plus there's a lifetime warranty from the manufacture as well, so that's all good.
If you are interested on the quality of the service, call Benny (manager) as Cybercity Auto @ 905-472-7781 and ask to see some tint jobs being done on the weekend. If I'm right they still doing tint jobs for the MPV club people. If you want to get your cars done, tell Benny that your part of the RX8 club, the price is $170 cash, or you'll be taxed
Enjoy!

AcuraEL 04-23-2004, 02:56 PM Thanks hobbes, good to hear your car turned out well.
Isn't 20% below the legal limit??? I thought Ontario is 30 or 35% limit? (from the installer than did my last car).
Edit: Just looked up the legal limit
http://www.iwfa.com/iwfa/consumer_info/auto_provincelaws.html
looks like front window limit is "vague", and back windows is "any". I don't like the word vague, does that mean law enforcement can do anything they want?
Edit2: cool, just looked at Llumar's website

in the upper right corner is a little picture of a red RX8.
hobbes 04-28-2004, 12:10 PM Whats happening with the 3M Film?
Well after leaving messages for John and emails, and I know others have as well, it seems that we are all in a waiting pattern. :o
So all I can say is keep calling him or find other sources that will give that kind of discount.
My paintchips are multiplying bit by bit and soon I'll probably lean towards getting the car repainted when the time comes instead of the 3M film, but we'll see.
If anyone has contacted John, please tell me what is happening, I would like to know what is going on myself. Thanks!

RickT 04-30-2004, 06:43 PM Am also interested in tint and the 3M. Did a few calls about the tinting. Prices ranged from $200 to $300. Some metallic tints, some regular. Sounds like metallic would be best as claims to increase heat rejection by 50% BUT also heard may affect the radio reception because of the antenna in the rear window.
Let me know about pricing and location.
hobbes 05-03-2004, 10:34 AM Rick T - call Benny (manager) as Cybercity Auto @ 905-472-7781 for tints. It cost $170 taxes includes if pay in cash. They use the Llumar tints which are metallic tints. For more info on the tint, look back on this thread for links. BTW you need to talk to Benny and tell him that your part of the RX8 club group rate. Just say the guy with the grey RX8 sent you there. It's day 12 and nothing wrong with my tints. As for the radio reception, I don't personally feel there is a difference. Have fun!

Vapormatic Vaporizer (http://www.vaporshop.com/vapormatic-vaporizer.html)
I got my car tinted at Cybercity Auto last week and I must say that I am very pleased with the result. The tint guy took his time to do it right and only cost me $170 cash. :-)
AcuraEL 05-11-2004, 11:34 AM I just gave Benny at CyberCity a call to set up an appointment to tint, but he said he is no longer doing tints anymore.
Reasons are that he is not making money on it, and the installer that comes to do the work takes up time and space of the shop. So it was a business decision to stop offering it.
Oh well, back to the search!
hobbes 05-11-2004, 04:39 PM AcuraEL - Wow really? I'm sorry to hear that. If I hear of any other place that is good I will post it here. I will give a call to Benny later this week to find out what happened. If you wish, ask for Axel, he's one of the business partners who own Cybercity, but I don't know if that will help or not.
Anyone got the 3M done? I've left messages for John but with no answer. It's been a while, so I'm probably giving up on it, but if there is a place that a bunch of you are going to get it done, I wouldn't mind dropping by to take a peak. :)

Vermont dispensary (http://vermont.dispensaries.org/)
MyRxBad 05-12-2004, 08:27 AM Hobbes: I've given up on the 3m thing right now. I've already got a few stone chips and will save the money and invest it in painting the front bumper at a much later date. For now I'll keep it waxed and stick to my getting out of the way of larger vehicles for the time being.
hobbes 05-25-2004, 11:59 AM So what is happening with the tint at Cybercit Auto...
Benny has explained to me that he was losing profit when getting cars tinted at the garage. When a car is being tinted he couldn't do any other work for other customers so that is why he decided to stop. He also mentioned to me that if he finds a solution to this that he will contact me and work something out for the rest of those who are still interested.
What to now? Seek out as a group for great tints places and price haggle if you want the windows to be tinted before the sun of Summer hits.
Since I didn't hear from anyone who got work done for the 3M film, as well as no news from John, I can only assume that no one in the original group has gotten it done. If you did, please post the results of the workmenship and so forth. Though I have opted not to get it done, others I believe would be interested in this info, thanks!

hobbes 05-25-2004, 03:24 PM CrackerJax - That's painful, but not impossible to fix. Either via a body shop or a do-it-yourselfer. CrackerJax 05-25-2004, 09:27 PM the timing just sucks that's all. i drive the same stretch of highway everyday avoiding stone chips, but wouldn't you know it, the day i give up trying to find the guy is the day i get the chip. The first one really got to me, cause I wasn't following any cars, so I have no idea where it came from. These things happens. We bought these cars to drive them, and minor damages are apart of that. Think of it this way, it could of been worse if someone hit your parked car with their door when you weren't there. Besides, now you can join the windshiled chip club lol.
nightkids - There are links to the 3M site if you do a search for 3M or go back to the beginning of this thread for FYIs. As for body kits and 3M, you wuold need to ask or do a search for that on the threads. I assume that it can be done, but it will cost a whole lot more, since it will be a custom job.

hobbes 06-02-2004, 10:33 AM Yup $ is the reason. Do a search on the 3M film and go to thier site, you'll find more than enough info on it.

That's hillarious :) It's like, if a plane's blackbox is made to survive a crash, why not make the whole plane out of the black box :)
Yeah, speaking of clear bra.... where is that JOHN character. I don't think that guy is serious about any deal. The last time I spoke to this guy, he was going on and on to sell me the product... I told him to relax, I was already sold, save the sales pitch, i just want it done. Since then, he hasn't contacted me since. I say Hobbes, we take our business elsewhere

CrackerJax 06-03-2004, 03:10 PM Hey guess what, John got too busy I guess, and referred my name off to another guy from 3M Timline. He's taking appointments.
I'm going to try to do mine soon. His name is John Legere, 905-792-8746. You have to go to his shop, around dixie and steeles (Brampton), I work close, so I'll be alright.
hobbes 06-04-2004, 11:01 AM that's good to know.

MrJynx 06-18-2004, 01:59 PM CrackerJax,
Did you end up going to see John about the 3m protection in Brampton?
MrJynx
CrackerJax 06-18-2004, 07:47 PM OH Shoooot, i meant to post something here.
By myself, he wants $675 for bumper, fender, 10" of hood, and mirrors. If i could get 9 other folks to join me, he can bring the price down to $575.
He does the bumper with fewer pieces, so it's less of a puzzle. I would like to get this done. If nobody else is interested, I'm in it for myself... i'm gonna pay CASH, if you know what I mean.
MrJynx 06-19-2004, 09:27 AM I think i'm going to meet with him on Monday. I need to get this thing on asap. I have a feeling i'll be plagued by flying stones :) Especially since my car is black. I wonder if he'll drop it for two people :)
MrJynx
CrackerJax 06-19-2004, 11:14 AM Hey MrJynx, surely you believe in jinx ;) I didn't have to worry about stone chips till I started to talk about the :) DOH
Maybe this clear bra thing could still happen. I don't really feel like paying more than $600 to get the job done, especially if I'm going to pay cash. I would really like to get it done for less, but i don't want to compromise quality and workmanship... hopefully we can chat about this at today's Toronto meet.
MrJynx 06-19-2004, 04:51 PM check you PM
dean2900 08-11-2004, 06:45 AM I had the xpel kit done on my S2000. It protected the impact spots greatly. I took the kit off 3 1/2 years later when I traded the S in on an 8. I highly recommend these kits.
I am not getting it for my 8 since I am leasing the car. if I purchased it, I would get it in a heartbeat.
