I've gone through the fora thus far and am still a bit confused as to what expected mileage and the best gas might be for the RX-8.

Personally I have been almost exclusively using 93 octane gas from Costco since its almost the same price as 87 octane everywhere else around here. I get about 18 mpg with 50/50 highway/non-highway driving primarily for a 15 mile/each way commute each day. This is with an automatic transmission.

Had PCM reflashed with L earlier this week while the car was in for the airbag recall, so I am looking forward to seeing if that changes anything.

What are others getting?

MPG/types of gas/type of transmission, please.

I'd say your milleage is nothing to complain about. I have same car, trans, fuel and driving pattern as you do. I get about 16 MPG on avearge. And that's with Canadian gallons, which are larger than US. I haven't had the PCM flash yet, but am hoping to. My dealer didn't seem too informed on it when I booked the apt.

Does you car have a kind of "loose" rattley sound from the engine at idle and low RPMs? This is my first rotary, but I've had a fair bit of car experience and it just sounds a bit too sloppy.
