But, has anyone flooded their engine after the "L" flash?

I do, because I'm considering purchasing the car. But I won't if the flooding issue is not fixed. No need to be so testy. :(

The "L" flash is still new, so you may have to wait a bit. Furthermore, there are not many flooding reports surfacing lately because a lot more people are taking the proper precautions to prevent it.

Frogger, I think you posted a valid question given the "L" flash is part of the NEW and official Mazda deflooding procedure.

My wife occasionally drives the Rx-8 and I have even used valet parking, so I'd like to know if I can breath just a little easier when occasional drivers take my keys.

I just got reflashed to "L" yesterday and was planning to post the same question.

I had a hard start this afternoon, I have the L flash. I don't think it was the standard issue with flooding though. I was parked on a fairly steep incline - The engine was fully warmed up (I had just driven many miles) and it had been stopped for maybe 15 minutes - I botched the first start (let off the key too soon) and it didn't quite fire up. Second attempt was crank-no-fire. Third attempt was a 5 second crank with the gas to the floor. I ended up just rolling it back down the driveway and pop-starting it in reverse which worked like a charm. The starter was sounding a little laboured so I think the battery is too weak for any kind of extended cranking.

I think the battery is too small for this car.

This is the first time I've had any issue starting the car since I got it in late July.

If that's enough to scare you away from buying the car, then there you go.

My initial response would have been testy also, but you're right this is a legitimate question. Did Mazda fix the problem. IMO, no, they've probably only reduced the number of floods. That said, I've never flooded my car, and had several cold shutdowns.

No flooding problems with the L flash, no hard starts. But then I never had flooding probs before I got the flash either.

I also agree that the battery is too small. Eventually I plan to relocate mine to the trunk and replace it with a "real" battery.

It's still a moot point.

If you are so worried about flooding, and that alone would make you hesitate on buying one, then don't. Simple as that....you need all the forum members here to make you feel better?

I do (and many others). You obviously have not been stranded by this problem. So its a very valid question and deserves an answer(s) or remarks from those involved.


No. I havent had the problem since getting the L flash two weeks ago. I've moved the car several times in and out of the garage with NO flooding problems. Time will tell.

Looks like the stock battery box will accept a normal sized battery, why mount it in the trunk?

The "L" flash does nothing for flooding. It just has a software update to prevent catalyst efficiency codes. The "M" flash contains the anti-flooding changes.

Seriously... I have driven my car under all conditions long and short and not once has it flooded on me. I have had my car since october. I must say this is one damn fine piece of machinery. Not one major issue yet. I am obsessive about the maintenance of my car though. Of course I am also a car mod freak.

Midpipe, Exhaust, Grounding Wires, Oil Cap (10hp right there), light rims, XM, footwell lighting, ASAA (As soon as available) Turbo Kit.

Um yah.... and still no floods. And uh... no way in hell I would let a valet drive this car. You gotta be nuckin futz.
