I was just on the 350Z Forum and they are buying 350Z's for $1,000 under invoice. I would think that the same thing will happen to the RX-8 6 months after all the pre orders are filled.
You can go to any Nissan lot and find 3 - 10 350Z's and they are willing to deal. I hope this will be the same for the RX-8.
Should I wait?

It depends on your area - that is it depends on the market penetration of the dealership(s) in your area. For example. In my area, the dealership will only get one RX-8 for each one they sell. They probably will NOT end up with 3-10 just sitting on the lot. At least not for a long time. That, plus the fact that there is a waiting list (and I'm getting the ONLY preorder car), tells me that I'd be waiting quite a long time to get my 8. Now, if my dealership was allocated lots of RX-8s, and I felt pretty comfortable that they would be maintaining a good inventory, then it would be a question of wanting to be one of the first, or wanting to save a bit of cash.
I really haven't told you anything, and probably haven't been very helpful. But I try! :D

In my area out side of Philly - most of the dealers are getting 6 - 8 per month for preorder. 1st , 2nd & 3rd allocation for Jan / Feb / Mar.
Picking a color is the problem - did not see the RX-8 in person.
Hard to go from the pictures??

The only downside to that is that means it is not selling quickly. I would prefer the 8 to sell quickly at msrp than dealers trying to get rid of them below invoice.
The $1000 under invoice was for one particular car at a particualr dealer, maybe it was a demo with a bunch of miles on it or something.
I haven't called around Nissan dealers to see what the Zs are going for these days but I would highly doubt that $1k under invoice is anywhere near the norm for a brand new Z with zero miles on the clock.

I really believe someone means $1000 below MSRP, not invoice. I have a dealer's license, and I can't get a 350Z for $1000 below invoice--not unless it was wrecked.

I don't know where someone is getting a Z under MSRP, but in December when I was trying to buy one, I talked with 4 separate dealerships and they all wanted MSRP for the car.
I was looking at the Touring Model loaded with Nav.
I went in the first dealership with a 10% cash down payment in hand and they refused to sell the car below MSRP. From what I could figure based on the invoice price plus their hold back they were going to be taking me for about 6,000+ in profit.
Shocked as I was I told the salesman that I would pay MSRP for that car as soon as I pull a live chicken out of my a**. Unamused he said "Well good luck finding it cheaper..." and frankly he was right.
Long story short after lots of debating and reading everything I could about the car I decided not to get one, then I heard about the 8 and placed my pre-order for it @ MSRP. Of course I had to call a dealer that was an hour and a half from my house to find a dealer that wasn't trying to get like 2,500 over MSRP, but I am more than willing to drive a hour and a half to save 2,500 bucks!!!

Good choice. I'm sure every minute of that drive will be worth the trip.
