Wheel opinions

I've narrowed my choices down to these two wheels for my 8. I have the Lightning Yellow color so I wanted to go with something darker like a gunmetal or black wheel so I narrowed it down to these two Motegi rims. I'm just not sure if I like the smooth style or the exposed rivot type for lines of the RX8. Any opinions or pics of this type of a wheel already on a car would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a yellow 8 and went with the motegi dpk's. I went chrome however. They are due in 3 weeks. They will either make or break the car.

Give mdw33333 a pm he hooked me up with an awesome price on the rims/tires. He owns a shop in Ohio and is a good guy.

Wheel number 1 looks less busy, simplicity rules. My vote, if it counts.

I on the other hand would choose #2 with the rivots. They have alot more character. If I where spending the money, I would want the wheels to stand out a bit more. What size are you going with?

I'm going to keep the original size mostly to avoid clearance problems because I plan to lower the car in the future. I also was concerned that the rivot style would be a little too busy for the lines of the RX8, which is why I wanted a second opinion. I don't want to turn my car into a ricer so I've been selecting my mods very carefully. Thanks for all the feedback.

Well my 2 cents would be to save up a little bit more money and get something else because you drive a RX-8.....and it deserves better quality rims than Motegis.. :o

BIU- are Motegi's a poor quality wheel? Money is not really an issue and I was really only going by style. Do you know of any other similar wheels that are a higher quality. I'm not very familiar with the reputations and quality levels of wheel manufacturers because I've never replaced my stock rims on any of my other vehicles. But like you said I think the 8 is such an awesome car that it deserves to be modified with the best available aftermarket pieces.

it is not a "poor" quality wheel but reputation and brand ranking wise theyre somewhere near the middle - bottom pack.

if money is not really a big issue i would recommend getting a set of nice Racing Harts or volks racing or SSR just to name a few...

Basically all i have to say is i will jizz over a 8 with a set of 3 piece SSR GT3s....

Don't let anyone sway your decision to go with Motegi wheels. From a durability standpoint, they're as good as any wheel on the market. I've been selling wheels along time and never had any issues with American Racing (Motegi). I've seen some of the supposed "top brands" on the market have wheels with finishes that deteriorate. Having wheels that last has more to do with how you take care of them and what you use to clean them.

By the way, most aftermarket wheels are made in just a handful of factories in the far east, so they all basically come from the same place. If you have the money to throw at a set of Racing Hart wheels, then more power to you. But, Motegis would be a fine choice for the money, and both wheels you've selected would look nice.

Mdw33333- Thanks for the info, I feel more comfortable making my decision based primarily on style now. A wheel would have to be pretty badly made for me to wear it out anyway considering I only put 2 to 3 thousand mile on my car a year and never drive it in the snow or rain.

You have a lot of money tied up in a car that never gets driven. Do you only use it for weekend jaunts to the city or something? You are either rich or a frivolous spender. (Or you take the train/bus everywhere.)

My 8 is my weekend/nice day car so that's why I don't put alot of miles on in a year. I have a 93 Mitsubishi 3000GT as my daily driver since it's been very reliable for me and has all wheel drive. I'm definitely not frivilous but I have to admit that I do have a severe addiction to fast cars. So as long as I have the money and my wife doesn't give me too much grief for spending too much I don't think I'm going to kick the habit anytime soon. Maybe I should see if the Betty Ford clinic has a wing for motorheadaholics, never know I might even run into Jay Leno

I totally agree. That's a sweet set of wheels.

But, the topic at hand. I like the first choice. I'm all about simplicity and form. The 2nd set look more flashy and not as classy. Geez, I'm a poet, and I didn't even think I was one.
