View Full Version : Dawn of the Dead
Elara 03-21-2004, 10:42 AM So, anyone else seen it yet? I was kind dissappointed (D MENAC 7 asked me about it in the Spielberg thread so I thought I'd start a new one instead of hijacking the other thread even more), aside from having zombie dreams for two days now-
Really, though, it wasn't all that, I think. 28 Days Later was scarier, and this seemed rushed. And you needed to suspend some serious disbelief, especially at the end (what the hell was up with the chainsaw thing? Was there a point to that? Or just a nod to slasher films?). And how come the zombies didn't get in the mall the same way the humans did? In any case, if you haven't seen it, I'd wait till it's out on DVD and Netflix it.
Meowloud 03-21-2004, 10:53 AM I liked how you didn't have to wait for the suspense to start at the beginning. But, yes Elara, I thought 28 Days Later was scarier. That movie actually explained and had some believablility.
I don't understand why at the end of Dawn of the Dead, why the people didn't run and get back on the boat?! Definetly a bit generic.
Baller 03-21-2004, 02:18 PM Great flic
Rotary Nut 03-21-2004, 02:19 PM I concur with Elara I'll wait for Netflix to pick it up.
Elara you must have like a 24 hour turnaround there in Richmond for your movies now that they put in the new distribution center there.
I have had Netflix for over three years now and it is the bomb! I haven't been to Blockbuster since. I hear The Walmart version isn't doing so well.
28 days later was good but what scared me more was the movie "Wrong Turn"! I'll now think twice about driving thru West By God Virginia!
Elara 03-21-2004, 02:54 PM Yes, our Netflix turnaround is seriously fast now- we were confused for about a month till we realized there was a distribution center here now. We like it so much we started buying stock in it- doubt we'll ever go back to Blockbuster.
Were you a fan of the original Elara?
flatso 03-21-2004, 03:24 PM I like the concept of Netflix but they never seemed to have the latest movies in stock. Has that changed?
Rotary Nut 03-21-2004, 03:39 PM When the movie is released on DVD they have it usually that month. I had "The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers" and "Solaris" on save for a few months in anticipation of the movies relase to DVD. They have a preorder that will reserve you a copy in anticipation of the movies release on DVD. It will be placed in another section of your queue at the bottom of the page.
I for the most part don't go to see the movie in the theater since it is either too cold, too noisy and most of all it is way too loud.
I have a 500 watt JVC/Bose 5.1 home theater system with a 32" JVC flat screen so I can enjoy it the way I like and I get to pause it to hit the head and so forth.
I actually saw 28 Days later and Wrong Turn to name a few at home and never saw it in the theaters. All thru Netflix (http://www.netflix.com/Default?hnjr=9)
strong bad 03-21-2004, 03:51 PM The remake seemed to be more comedic than I anticipated...in fact, I'd say it was almost 50/50 horror and comedy.
As a horror film, it was so-so.. But overall i thought it was pretty entertaining..

Never seen it- not really a fan of zombie movies- I prefer more gothic horror type stuff.
Rotary Soul 03-21-2004, 06:17 PM the new one is alright as a standalone zombie movie, but slapping the dawn of the dead name on it was unnecessary. it pretty much just jacked the premise of the movie and turned it into something that the original was not, i don't understand why they still used the name... coulda easily made it into a different movie altogether.

I totally agree. I'm a huge fan of the original. The older one was put together alot better (story/execution) and also had much better character development. This had no fear factor like the original one did. If the original one was a "5", I'll give this one a "3".
wakeech 03-21-2004, 07:35 PM i never saw the original, and never find movies scary at all. Dawn of the Dead looks like good fun though :D
i bought 28 Days Later the day it came out... pretty good movie for a zombie flick... exciting, but seriously, who actually gets scared at movies??
anyways, i wanna see it, probably will next week.
blizz81 03-22-2004, 09:36 AM I liked it a lot better than 28 days later, for what I look for in a horror movie at least. The people that would ask "How did this happen?" "Why wasn't zombie#10439 as fast as the rest of them?" "What was the point of them doing __insert thing here__?"...would probably generally prefer something like 28 days later.
I prefer a more mindless gorefest. While the new DotD wasn't quite unbridled in that respect, it had its moments...plus plenty of tongue-in-cheek horror movie humor.
It's been a while since I saw the first one - I've only seen it like, twice - I'm not a huge horror buff or anything....so I can't really compare directly. But I liked them both.
MadRonin 03-22-2004, 11:13 AM I didn't like the remake as much as the original. And that's not saying much, considering the fact that I didn't like the original much either (I also hated 28 Days Later). I tend to like horror movies that stick with you several days later; Like The Ring.
That being said this was probably the first horror movie I didn't like that has followed me into my dreams.
I'm the kind of person who is able to wake up from a dream, get up, go make a bathroom run, go back to sleep, and pick up where I left off. I can also change my dreams midstream. Well, last night, I had a weird dream where I was replaying Dawn of the Dead (the remake) in my sleep. All night long I kept thinking about the movie, and it was driving me crazy because I couldn't get into a deep sleep. So around 3am I decided I'd had enough and changed the rules of the dream. Instead of having the usual zombie killing arsenal (i.e shotgun, chainsaw, pistol, fire, etc.), I decided that it would be more efficient if I had a lightsaber. That coupled with a little 'Force Push' here and there, and I was able to take out all the zombies in my dream. Which in turn, allowed me to get some sleep.
No more zombie dreams for me.
Winning_BlueRX8 04-04-2004, 08:52 PM just got done watching it. I enjoyed it a lot. But don't take my word for it, take Maddox's:

Actually I started falling asleep trying to get thru the Russian version (I did watch it first to get a feel for the original) but in all fairness I was pretty tired and it was late. I found it to be a bit slow but ok. I liked the latest incarnation better.
