saw a rx7 convertible (last, last gen I think) today and flashed him while we were at a red light and I waved. driver looks in the rearview mirror and remains motionless.....
we hit marine drive near ubc and I pull next to him on the 2 lane area and I wave again, driver doesn't even smile back :(
oh wells... kinda reminds me how cruisers and gold wings don't wave to other motorcyclists :p

that's cause he has a sports car and we don't...

well no, it's just that not all RX-7 owners (especially owners of the older models) don't have an afiliation to the rotary community... the 3rd gen guys though, it's almost universal (not many non-rotary enthusiasts own FD's)

I say wave. You might only have someone who "gets it" 2 out of 10 times, but when you do, it's worth it.

I remember in 96 when I was biking home from work... I was relatively new in Boston. I was crusing a long when this 40-something-year-old guy in a red CRX going the other way sticks his head out the window and screams something at me while pumping his fist up and down.

I was like, "What? Is that guy nuts?" and kept pedaling. A second later it hit me... he yelled "Ayrton Senna!"

Yes, I was wearing a Bell, Senna replica bicycle helmet! One that I special ordered because it was a Senna replica. I turned back and waved, but I don't know if he saw me or not.

So even if you don't get a reaction, wave anyway.

Something seemingly insigificant can stick with you for a long time, just like me and the guy in the CRX.

I passed a lady driving a twin of my titanium RX-8 on Boulevard Gouin in Cartierville. Reciprocal waves and smiles, kinda nice.

If I see ya, I will wave. Having ridden bikes for 30 years, there is nothing like a friendly gesture from folks with common interests!

Driving up 123 just above the GW Parkway this morning here in Northern VA, I came up behind a very nice Ti 8. I pulled along side and waved. Driver gave a big grin and waved back. Its always nice to say hi to friends. The car behind us honked and waved at both of us. We definitely attract attention.

I have found I tend to see other 8's driving by my work, or parking nearby, and I am too busy to go out and say hi, kinda depressing... I have yet to pass one while I am driving.

I had a motorcycle in college and used to wave at my fellow bikers. I learned real quick that guys on harleys and cruisers don't wave back. Fair enough, I only had a 450 nighthawk.

When I had the '99 miata it was typical to get waves from other miata owners even from the first gen ones. On occasion I'd get a non-waver. I'd think "What's up with dat?"

So far I haven't come accross another rx-8 in any direction period. I'll be sure to wave to fellow rx-7/8 though.

On a side to this, I've gotten thumbs up from quite a few people driving other types of cars. A lot of stares too. Not that I'm looking for them :)

I've passed quite a few first gens. Surprisingly, they don't even seem to know what the hell I'm driving, so I've given up on the wave.

Most people who know what I'm driving (thumbs up etc) are not driving sports cars. Ironic.

Keep the faith guys... most Rx-7 drivers are well aware of what an Rx-8 looks like. All the people I know treat the 8 no different than the 7. They're different cars but they still come from the same family tree.

Every rotary powered car gets a gesture from me. I only wish there were some Rx-2's, 3's R100's etc. to wave at.

Sometimes the old guys will surprise you, I've had a few blue hairs give me the thumbs up before.

Eccentric, how old are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm 35.

I've got this impression that FC and FD owners are a bit older than FB owners (for the most part anyway). I see a lot of teens in FBs these days. And RX-8, 350Z, S-2000 is not really targetted at that crowd.

But... just to make things confusing: I own an FB as well ;)

was driving on oak bridge last week on my way with a friend to get some krispy kream and saw this (looks like freshly waxed) red 8 and I followed him to tawassen where he turned for the exit, me and my friend waved our arms off but the guy just wouldn't look at us :(

Once I parked my 8 and then as I walked to my house the ONLY 8 I've ever seen on my main-street drove by. I almost ran back to my 8 to chase the guy just for a wave, but I had my hands full.

i get waves almost daily from almost any kind of driver (must be the yellow screaming at them ..lol)

As for the Rx8 driver's, I've waved to them and they've always waved back except for this one guy in a red 8 on MJR MAC and Jane.

I get waves from some rx-8 drivers because I'm pretty sure I'm one of only few (no more than 5)fb drivers. When other 1st gens see me they either flash or rev at me.

Here in Texas I wave at other rotaries all the time. So far most 8 drivers who I have come across on the roads know what they are looking at when they see me and wave back. Some first gen guys and second gen guys are weird about it and don't wave, even to me in my FD.

well I waved at a red one on granville on way to work today but the guy just stared at me -_-

I dont agree. The most popular RX-7 with teens is by far the FC. Whatever SA/FB's are left are either emaculate and driven by "older people" or beat up/rusted and driven by just about anybody.

There are MANY RX-8's around Ottawa now and its obvious only a few owners are into rotaries... the vast majority just bought the car because its new and nice. I have YET to get a wave, or even a smile out of an 8 driver when I cross them in my SA or FD. Hopefully the 8 comunity will pick up and we'll be able to start seeing RX-8 owners (who are passionate about rotaries, not just their car) at the many rotary meets throught the year. The Ottawa meet today would be a good place to start ;).

To be fair:

1) I don't look around at other people in their cars, and I doubt they can see me through my tint anyway.

2) I had no idea about anything rotary until I wanted to buy the RX-8. I read up for about 2 months before deciding to get the car. It was only during my research that I found out about the RX-7. Until that point, I never considered buying a Mazda before, and had no idea the RX-7 was rotary.

If I were less of a geek, and wanted the RX-8, I can easily see myself buying it without the research, and thus not know why the RX-7 people were waving.

Here near D.C. almost no-one waves. I could be driving a Bugatti EB-110SS or a Veyron 16-4 towing a Mercedes gullwing and I doubt I'd get a wave. People around here are pretty impersonal. They think that if you wave you'll get shot or something. I've only taken two road trip in my 8 and both times almost everyone waved. I drove up to Pennsylvania to get some fireworks and I swear my hand was tired after an hour of waving back. Everyone, in every car, gave me a smile and a wave. It was nice to see really. I guess there are just so many 8's around here that people are used to it. A little further out away from the city and I didn't see even one 8 on the entire road trip.
