Question EVO VIII, WRX STi, v. the RX-8

whatsup everybody...I'm new here. I've been checking out the RX-8 for some time now and I am impressed with both the looks (the mazdaspeed rx-8 is sweet) and the performance. I've been day dreaming of revvvving that rotary on a regular basis. But recently I noticed that mitsubishi is bringing the evo VIII to the US and it has some 275 hp/275 lb ft torque give or take a few, and the Subaru WRX STi is going to have 300hp/300 lb ft torque- 0-60 in 5 flat and mid 4s respectively. They're also going to be either cheaper or the same price as the RX-8 (I think high 20's for the mitsu, and low to mid 30's for the subaru).

Although I am impressed with the rx-8 performance, @250 hp seems to have become the standard (look at the accord, altima, A4 etc). and when I saw the 0-62mph guestimate of 6.5 seconds for the Mazda....I was a tad bit disappointed. So what do yall think? Personally, I think the evo and the sti are both ugly, looking like they came straight out of 1989, but with performance like that (not to mention awd), its hands down......unless you turbocharge or supercharge the mazda (not sure if you can even do that, plus it'll get pricey). Any input would be appreciated....thanks.

1. turbo/supercharging the RENESIS is just about impossible.

2. how big's your family, more than 3 and the 8 would be the go. 4max in the STi, trust me.

3. My dad's got a 98 WRX and says that the sound of it was very similar to his RX-4.

4. More power out of the STi and the EVO.

I'm inclined to the STi, the new ones that are coming out here, not the one's u are getting i think, have more power (still 206kW but with 394Nm and all this new stuff in it including a twin-scroll turbine). The top of the line 2-door STi spec C will get to 8000rpm very quickly. It also sounds much better that the STi. the C has Brembo brakes, 17-inch wheels. At this stage only Japan is getting the Spec C, which is a shame.

If you want an opinion on the EVO I'm no0t your man. In this forum you should have picked up enough on the RX-8 and from me, a bit on the STi, but to be fair, you need a good study on the EVO. Good luck my son!

You can get an EVO8 for 'high 20's' ????

That is like £~18K over here....
Mitsubishi UK are chaging £27K (and that is £3K cheaper than the Evo7)

How the hell does that work ?

Car built in Japan , shipped to US = $28,000apx
Car built in Japan , shipped to UK = $43,000apx

Does not seem right :-(

RX8 is similar - cost more over here. But then we get a better spec. (6cd standard etc)

So - I dont want to hear any more US persons moaning about lack of specs in their RX8 - look how much more we have to pay !
You are getting an utter bargain !

M.

Mazda at a meeting said they want to see how much hp they can get out of a n/a motor before they take out the turbo version that mean that they are going to test the turbo version on the race track and on the 1/4 run first . flaco racing is going to have one of those motors also a 3rotor . they going to test it for 2 years first . But did you all know that perl motors been out for a long time go to racingbeat.com you will see it there.

1. Just about everyone on this forum has said that turbo/supercharging a RENESIS is impossible.

2. There just isn't any room.

The evo and STi are rally cars you cant compare them with good ol' RWD sport cars. Second supercharging isnt impossible. It isnt until mazda says it isnt.

That's not what I heard from some Mazda guys at the St. Louis auto show, in fact I even started a new thread about it.

The engine being able to take boost and a RX8 fitting a turbo kit under the hood are two seperately different things. I'm sure with some creativity, someone could fit a turbo kit under the hood of the RX8. Just remove some of that Fischer-Price plastic and make some room.

Dude, very little of the "gossip" on this forum is actually true. Most are speculating, and some are even guessing and speaking as if they know something when they really don't.
2. There just isn't any room.
No room, gimme a break. Those who have said that are speculating just from looking into the engine bay, and not seeing any open space immediately evident. I wouldn't take that as a knowledgeable assessment.

But not entirely...

Someone will find a way--and they always do. The 350Z and NSX come to mind, especially the latter since there are both turbo and super charger kits available with pretty good success, despite early speculation that forced induction would be an impossibility due to space contraints.
