View Full Version : Let's do some stereotyping!

I'm usually not one to stereotype, but I just can't help it anymore.
I've decided that nearly every person out there driving a Dodge Avenger/Sebring thinks they are the second coming of Big Daddy Don Garlits. Everytime I see one they are revving at me at a light, talking trash, weaving in and out of traffic like morons to catch up to me, or weaving in and out of traffic in their imaginery race they are having with me.

Next... why do people in pickups think they drive something fast? Look here Corky, your Dodge Ram with a Hemi is not fast. I get into more accidental races with these guys than any other car. I take off from a stoplight swiftly and all the sudden Jethro thinks we're at the Gatornationals. I try to merge coming onto the highway and there's some jackass in a pickup, who when I get near him to merge, decides he has to floor it and weave through rushour traffic for a couple miles. Finally there are the pickuo guys that ride everyones ass during rushour and change lanes every 500 feet and manage to do nothing but all back further in traffic as a result (did I mention almost all of them have the #3 in at least 1 location on the truck.

Ok, that's my rant. Have you placed any stereotypes on certain driver as a result of them regulalrly being asshats while you were a whitness? Or just have a general dislike for certain car/carowner combos with some actual experiences to back up you stance?

Most of the time I just shake my head in disgust and go about my business. Today however I'm merging and there is one of those Dodge hemi things merging with me it's a 4 lane road and we both need to get over 4 lanes pretty quick. So I floor it to cut over and make my way through traffic. in the lane I want to be in but wanting to pass the slow moving car in my lane that is coming up I hit it again and so does the truck, I pulled several cars on him up to 90 or so and the slowed down. Usually I resist and don't waste my gas on them, but today for some reason I felt the need to show him that his truck just isn't all that fast. I slowed to around 80 and was just cruising on the freeway then, and a few seconds later he flys by me. So I give up, maybe it's going to take a national service bulletin for them to realize that just because they have a big engine doesn't mean they are fast and should drive like morons.

I was walking past two guys outside Pep Boys yesterday who were putting an racing banner of some sort on the windshield of their Ford pickup.
After I got back to the 8, I put my stuuf in and backed up across the parking lot to the row where they were, rolled down my window, waited until one of them looked to see what I wanted and said:
"Its still just a truck!"
The guy on the other side dropped the F-bomb and I laughed.
I think they were mad, but I don't think Jed was able to kick the dog out of the driver's seat fast enough to chase me down for an old-fashion lynching.

Dude i know what you mean. This guy in a red Dodge Ram 1500 tried to race me on the freeway onramp...so i was like okay...so i guess i gave it some gas and owned him (not proud). Then the guy gets crazy he starts tailgating me and flashing his brights at me and then tries to race me on the freeway. It was scary but he did get his race after i got scared and took it up to 110...lost him in my rear view mirror very quick. But anyway moral of the story, truck drivers are whack!

The worst thing is that here in California, those truck f$%#s drive the same in the wet as they do in the dry, tailgating, then passing , then tailgating, then passing.

But I think you are all missing the biggest point of all, and the one that miffs me the most. Regardless of whether they can go fast or not, they can not stop or turn NEARLY as fast - that's the part that scares me. They treat their freaking behemoth like it can stop on a dime and take a hairpin at 100. If I was making the rules, max horsepower would be tied to braking and cornering ability. Let them have all the low-end torque they want, just put the fuel-cutoff at 2.5K on the tach. :D

Small town, four way stop.

Truck approaching rapidly from my right as I come to a nice stop.
Seeing me stopped, figures he can get around the corner in front of me if he just gives it a little gas......

So he gooses it a little, and lifts a wheel turning right in front of me.......forgetting he has his hound in the back, (as they always do).

Fido doesn't make the turn, and flies out about twenty feet across the road.....THEN truckboy comes to a full stop!

I gave him a nice smile as I passed real slow, and as he picked up his yelping dog, he wanted to know "what the f*ck I was looking at?"

Arr, arr, arr.

There must be some unwritten rule that if you drive a pickup truck and it's raining or snowing you must speed even more than normal to prove your dominance.

Sterotypes? Sure. I've noticed that most of the times when I encounter a truly attrocious driver around here (below even the normal low standard), they generally turn out to be of a particular ethnic group.

Considering that this particular group makes up a very small percentage of the overall population in these parts, it's scary how over-represented they appear when it comes to poor driving.

I have not put a lot of miles on mine yet, but a friend has a 911 carrea4 (?) whatever. Anyways he says it is ususally the vehicles that really shouldn't be running that fast, that always feel they have to prove something. Like you are pointing out, trucks, cameros, etc. He says he 'generally' smiles and watches as they go off and try to kill themselves.

Oh yea, around here we have a lot of 3's on trucks too.

1) This thread is hilarious and I have to agree with the truck things.

3) Back to the topic. Where I live there are about a thousand late 90's four door civics with body kits, wings and tin can exhausts. And without fail if I leave my street I get passed, tail-gated, revved on and eyeballed by one. Two days ago on a three mile stretch of road I got rolling-revved on by TWO white ones and a red one....sheesh...I'm just going to get some milk and beer at the store people!

Back on topic... Volvo drivers in general, especially the drivers of the older boxy ones seem to be really bad. Overly safe drivers are even more dangerous than aggresive ones if you ask me.

Hey, I resent all the truck comments.

I happen to drive one of the finest automobiles known to man. It is capable of taking out any vehicle it comes across. The 8, WRX, EVO, 911, they don't stand a chance. The way I look at it is street racing is not about having the faster car (although I know mine is), it is about not letting the other guy pass. If that means running them off the road or cutting them off so be it. The more obnoxious the better.

What fine car might I be referring to?

Why none other than a 93 Ranger, 4 banger, 5 speed. It is untouchable. Did I mention the beast has 260,000 miles on it? That may seem like a lot, but it just means it’s broken in. So bring it on.

I actually do have the above-mentioned truck, but I know it is slow as dirt and drive as such and find street racing beyond dumb. However, I do know that most truck drivers are horrible at driving. When they drive fast in the rain and snow, I slow down because my truck is only rear wheel drive and is pretty scary in the snow (but fun in and empty parking lot).:)

The two vehicles that have given me the biggest temptation are the exact two IKE mentioned in the beginning of this thread. The first, the Dodge Hemi truck. Gets up next to me at a light, all I could see was this guys undercarriage. The light turns green, he screams off as I was not even thinking at the time this was going to happen. I couldn't help it, I punched it and by about 3/4 down the block, I was passing him as we both decellerated to a stop sign. He pulls up, hits it again, I just take off slowly as if out for a Sunday stroll. It was in clear traffic in a short stretch on a one way street so you could see everything ahead, there were no parked cars even.

The second was a black Dodge Avenger. Now, I liked the Dodge Avenger when it was made. Almost bought one a few years ago when we were buying my wife a new car but they had gone out of production a year before so we settled on a Eclipse at that time. It was between that and a Stratus, both had the same engine, chassis and dashboard. So, anyway, there's traffic, he's behind and he's going around cars to the left, to the right and I am just staying my course on my way home driving a bit spirited at that moment. He decides that I was challenging him by the way I was driving so he makes a few wrong choices and gets a few cars back in another lane. He gets a break (of course all I had were breaks because this is my route home from work and I know when and where to be, what the light pattern is, etc. home field advantage) and he catches me at a light, the very same light as that f$#$*g Ddge Hemi pickup. I look over to him, roll my eyes and as the light turns green, give it a go and get to the stop sign, go, get to the next light, go and finally get to the last stop sign before home and make my turn as he is just coming to the stop sign. If I didn't know better, I would swear he had traded the Dodge Hemi Pickup on the Dodge Avenger, they both looked alike, red necks with something to prove.

Nothing against Dodge owners, before my RX-8, I owned a series of Mopars and nothing else for years. I swear I was never that way when I was in those, but then again, I never had a number on my vehicles excepting my license plate.

Trucks are not sleepers, the ones that are fast if you know anything about cars you recognize right away. The people that drive these trucks don't drive like the jackasses with the trucks that have big engines but are slow. And besides that, the Cyclone and Lightning were such pieces of crap and handled so poorly that most have gone to the big scrapyard in the sky.

The Dodge SRT-10 while a fast truck just makes me want to laugh at the idiot that was willing to pay 45k+ for a pickup truck. For that price I could have an Elise and a used pickup for hauling stuff and bad weather if I really needed it. Mike, it also runs mid 13s 1/4 mile from what I've seen, which will only hand a stock WRX it's "ass" and only in a straight line if it can manage to get traction.

I have two "major" stereotypes:

Long ago, I noticed that a certain brand of truck seemed to ALWAYS be involved in the stupid manuever that almost hurt someone (or potentially could have). After a few years of observation, I now COUNT on it to happen, and am mostly right. Who, you say? Ford Explorer Sports! Not the "regular" Explorer, but the smaller, two door, "sport" model. I have seen more of the most dangerous driving from this group - maybe it takes a certain mentality to wnat one of these (sort of like Mustangs - ooopps - another stereotype).

The second population group who upsets me the most is mothers who fly through school zones and housing areas! Typically, you will see that the fastest "group" of drivers will be the moms who have THEIR kids in the car with them, yet when they are out on the sidewalk with their kids, they will tell YOU to slow down (even if you are going the speed limit) because THEIR kids are playing near the street (which is a completely different discussion)!

So is your mouth. What do YOU drive a Dodge Hemi Pick up?

Yes, the SRT pick up could hand me my ass in a race but, the type of driver who drives one, isn't the type of driver we are stereotyping here, he/she is probably more of a conservative driver than the Dodge Hemi pickup driver mentioned above. I have never pulled up next to someone and intentionally revved for a race, I never pick the fight, I would rather "race" solo because I am in a hurry than race someone else. This is not a habit of mine to race anyone, sometimes it's just taking out the frustrations. I've never had a Civic, Celica or other car popular with the kids rev next to me.

I stayed behind a Supra a couple of weeks ago just to see what they can do and I knew better than to really challenge him because he would have handed me my ass without a problem. Besides, I never got next to him at a light, I just followed a few hundred feet behind him. I did not consider it a challenge. He did do a bit of a rev at the light when I was behind him and it had a nice cadence of sound. This was a Supra that was in perfect condition, so much it looked new.

One other offender was the 50 something year old guy in a big-ass Mercedes Benz something or other who intentionally screamed off at a light just to show me who's more "powerful" and which I totally ignored because I had nothing to prove and I knew I couldn't have matched his torque and HP on any day of the week.

99 times out of a 100, I ignore these peeps who do the challenge thing. That 100th time I always weigh if it's worth it or not if I do decide it's worth the challenge by looking at first my impulse,. then at what's around, traffic, location, obstacles, cops and, foremost, people. If ever there is one thing that doesn't look right, forget it and drive on.

A few weeks ago I was driving to work in our typical bumper to bumper traffic here in Austin. In the lane next to me pulls up 2 of our fine local inbred folks driving a pickup that is difficult to describe - raised with monster tires, more dents than good metal, more mud than paint, no muffler . I swear I could hear "Deliverance" music playing. The driver proceeded to rev his engine indicating that he wanted to race in the traffic which, by the way, was now at a complete standstill. I couldn't help it and busted out laughing. Well, that set them off. The passenger decided that he was going to spit his chaw at my car thru the rear sliding glass window of their pickup. Fortunately his aim was off and the tobacco hit the inside of glass window and oozed down inside of the truck. I was now laughing so hard that I almost rear ended the car in front of me. Dangerous driving here in TexAss!

Among all makes, I've noticed that BMW may have the highest percentage of rude drivers.

So true.

One other type of driver is one in a 4Runner. No offense to anyone that drives one, but I have had more issues with drivers of 4Runners over the years then any other vehicle. Everyone is in their way.

out here in los angeles my daily commute consists of the 405 so it's not like people get much of a chance to race. but as far as stereotyping goes, there's a couple categories i have. expeditions/tahoes/excursions fall into this strange behavior of cutting you off whenever they can, even if it's into a slower lane... i don't quite understand it but they like to change lanes...often...for no apparent reason. then there are suburbans, i dont' know why but i haven't noticed the same behavior from them.

i also work in the bel air area so there are a lot of fancy shiny cars around... the bmw owners around here seem to have something to prove. one guy in a 745 pulled up next to me while at a red, into the space between me and the curb so he could gun it past everyone. i don't think so. an x5 tried to do it too. i'm a little mixed on these guys, do they deserve to get boxed in to some car parked on the side for the sake of my time and all the other respectable peopel around me? or should i just feel sorry for the person where losing 5 secs of his life causes so much grief?

i've only been revved at once on the fwy and that was by a 30th anniversary camaro... hehe i ain't touchin' that one.

oh another stereotype...business vans...like the econoline types... what buttheads! i've yet to notice a courteous one...then again, they blend in pretty well so maybe i only notice em when they drive like jackasses.

then there are taxi drivers and airport shuttles. whenever i see one, i just back the hell off and steer clear of their path of destruction.

I was challenged last night by a Talon, of all things, at about 12:15 am. I think he'd taken his muffler off, and he drove next to us for about 4 miles reving his engine at me. I ignored him. The entertainment happened when, just after a light when he decided I wasn't going to play and had swerved around me to mess with the civic ahead, and we drove past literally 23 cop cars. There had been a checkpoint earlier, and they were all just hanging around. You have never seen so many teenagers hit their brakes so fast in your life. Since I wasn't going over the speed limit (I was tired, and it was in the city) I didn't have to do anything other than sail past.

Fear the Talon Elara, especially loud ones... Well... fear them if you ever feel inclined to race one, at the track of course... :p

Wow, four pages complaining about the trucks on the road. Maybe its because i'm a girl but I have never pegged the pick-up truck drivers as being the 'bad drivers'. Yeah, some of them suck. I hate the white vans all over phoenix. They are either moms w/ kids going too slow (thats ok if they are polite) or they are company vehicles with drivers in a hurry because of a schedule. Plus, because it isn't their van, they dont care if they run the van into the ground by driving too fast and on sidewalks.
Anyone else in phnx notice that?

the talon that was trying to mess with me was driven by a teenager- there was no way it was anything exciting. It was more just annoying.

Your Turn,

Funny how just a short while ago, you were ridiculing me for stereotyping Mustang/Camaro owners, and now you ask people on this forum to do it? Remember the pot and kettle comment? Hmmm...

I know street kills aern't allowed, but... I had a guy in a Dodge P/U (with a hemi) start racing me, but I just blew right past him as soon as he started in. I turned to Mrs Doc and said, "Hemi what?" :D
I can attest to all sorts of *ahem* moronic sorts, there is an automotive tech school here, and almost every last one of the students think they have the hottest vehicle - take your pick - rice-a-roni specials, some muscle cars, and of course, the always crowd pleasing redneck pickups that range from little Rangers to full-size-way-over-done-but-since-I-have-to-compensate-for-SERIOUS-short-comings-confederate-flag-waving-South-will-rise-again jerks....
ooops! sorry...

My biggest pet peve of all has nothing to do with racer wannabes. It's those people who decide to have a conversation with another car and they drive at sub par speeds yelling back and forth all the while hold up traffic behind them. These people don't have any decency what so ever about respect for the other guy, all they can think about is themselves.

Another is the I can pull over in any traffic and let someone off, pick someone up who I just happen to have seen walking down the street or I just wanted to say hi and have no care for the people behind them.

Speaking of ugly, you should post some pics of your wife/girlfriend so we can all decide which is uglier, your car or your wife/girlfriend (assuming you even have one)? My guess is that it would be a tie... both ugly.
