View Full Version : RX8 replaced...so long forum members, and thanks!
wildwhl 03-09-2004, 11:52 AM Hello group. Still been lurking since the buyback of my '8 last year, watching the cool aftermarket development and excellent enthusiasm for this car. It is, in fact, a great automobile that I thoroughly enjoyed when I had it (them). Quick refresher, mine had problems and lived in the shop for 29 days shortly after purchase without a solution - so we opted for the buyback figuring we would wait for the Mazda community to shake this thing out and we'd look again later. At that time we purchased a Nissan Murano, and I began driving the 2000 Maxima SE that we had. The car was plenty quick with a full exhaust including headers and some suspension mods, but being FWD with more torque steer than I could handle, not to mention the automatic slush box - well, I guess owning the RX8 for the short period I did ruined this car for me (because I used to love it).
We purchased something entirely different last week and not to be compared with the RX-8, quite frankly. I am now the proud owner of an '04 Cadillac CTS-V. It handles beautifully (although the '8 has better balance by far) and the monster power of the LS6 just keeps gluing silly grins to my face every time I dig into the throttle. This car is, quite frankly, for experienced drivers only (something I believe I am, but have since been surprised a time or two by this hot rod).
So, I'll still be lurking from time to time, watching as each of you enjoy, modify, and help develop one of the best cars I've ever owned - the Mazda RX8. I expect to witness great things as FI issues are sorted out, and wouldn't be too surprised to see one of you smoke my ass in a drag race at some point in the not too far off future. I might have 400hp in a somewhat of a beast automobile - but I know once somebody achieves around 325hp or so in an '8 without screwing up the driveability or balance - well - that will be one serious contender. I've never seen a car with as much potential as that which each of you own. Then again, the LS6 will certainly see a bolt on FI solution within a year or two from the aftermarket (I hope!).
Enjoy.:D
Baller 03-09-2004, 11:59 AM The Caddy is a great machine....but how did you get one early....mine has been on order for 5 months and the dealers say they are not due for 3 or 4 weeks.

wildwhl 03-09-2004, 12:23 PM Well, somewhat of a long story, but I'll summarize.
Oct/Nov - RX8 buyback
Dec/Jan/Feb(car show) - dreaming and researching replacement - settle on Volvo S60R AWD, mostly because of potential tuning possibilites. Wife drives V70R (autotragic) and loves it, of course.
magazines in mail (C&D and R&T) have reviews of this killer Caddy, but I'm thinking the wife will never go for it. Last week I get the urge to at least call the local dealer and see when a "V" might be in. The tell me 8th or 9th - not accepting deposits - first come first served. I say "OK" and proceed to test drive standard CTS. Last Thursday wife and I decide to have local Volvo dealer locate an S60R to our liking and make appointment to make a deal Friday at 4:00 p.m.
3:45 p.m. on Friday the Caddy dealer calls and says the V is in. We head straight there - wife looks, says she likes enough, and for me to pick which car I would rather have (but I must promise to quit talking about how great the RX8 was). This one is a no brainer for me. 5:15 p.m. deal is done. Drop of Maxima Sat a.m. and pick up Cts-V. Smiling ever since:D
Baller 03-09-2004, 12:25 PM NICE
VescorMatt 03-09-2004, 12:38 PM CTS-V. Congratulations! I'm still waiting for one to show up at my local dealer so I can check it out. Please let me know what you think of it. It is one heck of a car on paper.
compaddict 03-09-2004, 12:55 PM Very cool! Happy lurking!

Lawerence 03-09-2004, 01:19 PM Wow, can you give me your adress and leave your car parked unlocked in the driveway please ;)
Seriously, those are some bad cars. The first caddy in forever that is appealing to me.
Just tell me one thing...please...PLEASE tell me you got it in black.
Oh and TTIWWP, so get some now!
cueball 03-09-2004, 02:50 PM Your sure picked a great car. The LS1/6 is an amazing engine. I have heard of exhaust and headers on a 'Vette that were good for 35 HP.:o
The V makes the CTS look good. I was never that excited about the base model, but in V trim it is nice. Even the base model looks better to me now.
I happy to see that you got into a car that you like, even though it may not be a RX8.;) Enjoy the Caddy and maybe someday you will get back into an 8.
flatso 03-09-2004, 02:56 PM Not that it matters but is it cool to own a Caddy again? Have they gotten past the old man image to the general public? Are the rappers driving them?

I could swear I saw one driving here yesterday. I noticed it because I never saw a Caddy without a name but with only letters and I know that at least 3 were the CTS. Was there an earlier model of this? This one did look brand new, though.
zoom44 03-09-2004, 03:14 PM flatso- what the hell is that woman putting in her nose?!
D MENAC 7 03-09-2004, 03:14 PM Then again, it is a GM and I would never own a GM product. That and KIA are two makes that I would never own in my life. Give me a Mazda, Mopar, Toyota, Honda, Ford or any, well maybe not a VW either, other make over those two. IMO. Everyone has a make they despise.
However, I hope you enjoy your new Caddy.

Not telling but somebody will guess it. I can tell you it's 'not' the G Spot attachment for the Hitachi Magic Wand

I love it, so far. Just took an exxxxxtra long lunch and put another 100 miles on it over some twisties...amazingly solid and ALWAYS enough power (so far, at least). The interior gadgetry is fun - NAV, OnStar, XM, power everything, personal memory stuff- you name it. More than enough "luxury" for my tastes.

There was a time when I've said that I wouldn't be caught dead in a Caddy. But these are different times . . .

OBryanRX8 03-09-2004, 06:51 PM funny the twist this thread has taken
Don't forget to add a little salt if the water contains Cl2 or it wiil burn like hell while streaming through your blowholes. I have a brass one it's been a family keepsake for generations, oh how I cherish it.
carnut 03-09-2004, 11:15 PM I would love to have a CTS-V. Our local Volvo dealer has a red S60R sitting on the lot calling my name, also. I would love a full report on your experiences in the Caddy. It seems several of us have the same taste in cars, and not just with the RX-8!

What is Cl2? May be good for my Grandma?

Yea, you can get it in black or silver, but black is the only real color for the car ;)

So post some pics now.

mikeb 03-10-2004, 03:27 PM good looking car
I love that grill
ypwpat 03-13-2004, 04:51 PM Damn i love the new Caddy. Love it since watching the Matrix Reload and Bad Boy II :D
It's a pity that Australia Holden (GM) cancel the plan of Bringing in the Caddy into Australia :( I love that car too.
RXilar8ed 03-13-2004, 05:59 PM Yeah, glad you like the Cad, but I've never liked the styling on that car. Big square, hard boxy lines, even read that the new top guy at Cadillac hated it. But different strokes for different folks. And someone mentioned the Escalade? Excuse me, is there any uglier SUV on the road, other than the Navigator? Sorry, I just love my RX8, the lines, the interior, the finish. But, please, enjoy your new ride. At least when you're inside it, you don't notice the exterior. And at least you're getting some nice acceleration out of it.
wildwhl 03-13-2004, 09:03 PM A few pics are posted previously in this thread. Wrung the V out a little today and I must say it handles incredibly well and, yes, the power is awesome! This is one car I will be keeping for a long time.
maxwell72764 03-14-2004, 08:51 AM Really nice car but does it have a special holder for the nose cleaner thingy?
VikingDJ 03-15-2004, 01:13 AM Sweet looking machine, but just not my taste in looks or price for that matter. I'll take those extra amenities, and that power in my rx8 anyday though. It must be quite a rush.
Very cool, when do we get an exhaust sound clip? :D
mazdabob 03-15-2004, 02:03 AM I'm really surprised that so many people like the CTS. It's a tall, ugly box. Remember the K-car. So, the V has a Corvette engine, then why not get a Corvette?
bubble 03-15-2004, 06:46 AM Curb Weight: 3850 lbs. Have fun in the twisties!
FamilyGuy 03-15-2004, 02:02 PM Why not get a Corvette? The CTS-V seats 4 comfortably, and until you hear the exhaust or see the 'V' you don't know that it's a rocket. Some people like having cars that are much faster than they look. Plus, from what I understand Corvettes aren't that luxurious in the interior. The CTS interior isn't supposed to be world class, but I'm certain it's much better than a 'Vette.
As for Caddys in general - I don't like big SUVs, so the Escalade variants do nothing for me. On the other hand, I think the SRX and XLR are sweet. The base CTS is the best entry level Caddillac they've had in a very long time, while the CTS-V is the best performance Cadillac ever. And while the preview pictures GM released of the 2005 STS look boring, at least it's rear wheel drive with a VVT version of the NorthStar V8. In a discussion thread at the AutoWeek forums, a GM employee hinted that the STS-V will be faster than the CTS-V in a straight line. He was probably blowing smoke up my nose, but it would be awesome if it was true.
I don't think Cadillac has had this much brand prestige in over twenty years.
carnut 03-15-2004, 06:40 PM I'm pleased to see Cadillac getting competitive again after many, many years.
Aratinga 03-23-2004, 10:46 AM I had to resurrect this thread after watching this race (http://world-challenge.com/news/04press55.html) on SPEED last weekend. The CTS-Vs were amazing ... one led from pole to finish, and the other one, stalled at the start and catching up from dead last, passed every other car in the race (Audis, Vettes, Vipers, Saleen Mustang, etc) to finish second behind his teammate.
I never thought I'd be impressed by a Cadillac, but this one is definitely NOT a luxobarge.
Excellent choice of automobile, WILDWHL.

wildwhl 03-23-2004, 04:29 PM <Curb Weight: 3850 lbs. Have fun in the twisties!>
Exactly where the car performs its best. I am truly surprised by the way this car handles the twisties. My Ducati can beat it, sure, but quite frankly, it reminds me of the '8, although the balance (neutrallity if that's a word) isn't quite as good as the '8. Brakes, body roll, and turnin are superior to the RX8 - without a doubt.
Hell, I had plenty of time with an '8 in my life to know how good they are (and they are good). Now that I'm used to driving the V - I'll take any 8 on that I've seen or driven - straight track, mountain road, or otherwise. That is, of course, until someone creates a HiPower turbo or supercharged version. Then, let me add an S/C to my V and we'll go head to head :-)
That being said - I still think the '8 is a fantastic automobile. Remember my initial post in this thread - I think the '8 will develop into one fast and furious ride over the next few years. The CTSV already is.
Wildwhl:cool:
Rotarian_SC 03-23-2004, 05:06 PM Hmm, nice car. I never quite liked the CTS styling though, looks like a box that was folded a bunch so it has some creases. Still it is probably a fun car to drive. I think I would have to take an M3 over a CTS-V though.
wildwhl 03-24-2004, 11:34 AM M3 = Great Car.
However, I have one boy and one in the oven. If a two seater (or two door) car was an option, we'd be talking on a whole different forum. I've gone head to head with an M3 already in the V, and lost (barely) in the twisties. Those are really great performance cars. Too bad only one person can ride along with you in comfort. This is also why the RX8 is so great - the ability to carry passengers in relative comfort!
I'm outta here - contractions are 4 min apart and it's time to get this second kid out of mom and into the "V".
Peace.
bubble 03-24-2004, 11:39 AM Its a luxury sedan. Don't confuse it for a sports car. There are plenty cars that cost 30 to 35,000 that will hand the CTS-V its ass.
VikingDJ 03-24-2004, 12:05 PM You get what you pay for. The CTS-V is a lot more money then the rx8, so I would certainly hope it is a better overall vehicle. It's just not really comparable because it's in a higher price range, and a different class all together. I'd imagine it does handle nicely regardless of weight, and of course it will definitely hand the rx8 it's ass in a race. I could never imagine owning a CTS-V, because I am just not into vehicles like that, but Cadillac put loads more money into it then mazda did the rx8, so it certainly has to be considered an upgraded vehicle. I'd never buy one, but I can see how you love it. it is a nice vehicle for sure.
wildwhl 03-24-2004, 04:10 PM Alright, this thread has ended it's usefulness. Many of you did not read my initial post and simply do not understand that I was not comparing the 8 to the V. I doubt (know, from personal experience) that there are many cars that can hand the V, or the 8, its ass in the $30-35K range, but let's not argue here.
I'm lucky/glad to have owned/own both an RX8 and a CTSV and again simply wanted to thank the members of this forum for their assistance during the troubled times we had with both RX8's.
Good luck to all of you. Should one of you own one of those $35K cars that can hand me my ass, come on by. I'll be ready to be humbled. Had I happened across one of them in my long search for a new car, I likely would have bought it. Just remember, the race isn't fair unless you can at least carry 3 adult size passengers along with you.
Never said it was a sports car - only a delightfully great car to drive.
Bye Bye forum - and thanks again to the more mature audience that levied in - I won't miss the other faction(s).
