View Full Version : Received recall letter

I received mine today, worked is scheduled for next Monday.

Did anyone have a rattling noise from the transmission before they had recall work done? Did it fix it? I have a weird rattle that I usually only get in fourth gear around the 4-5k RPM range.

Despite the recalls, I still have to say I love the car. I just can't wait for the snow tires to come off.

I had the recalls done. I had a little rattle under the car prior to the damper repair. I no longer have a rattle under the car at all. The new damper is pretty cool.

What is that damper repair you are talking about? I heard of the airbag recall but not of any other.

If you only got a recall notice for the airbags, then your vehicle is not included in the damper recall. I got my letter today, a victim of both recalls. have it scheduled for repair next week. Still love my RX-8!

I got the Air Bag recall today too. I will schedule the appointment tomorrow for later in the week.

they told me they need a couple of hours for airbag recall

The letter states 30 minutes for the airbag, 90 for the damper. I hope they can get it done in one day.

How did you manage the plugs and ECU reflash?

Got my letter today, recalls were already taken care of last Wednesday. Nice souvenir, though.

I also got mine today this PM. Funny thing is I am taking my car in tomorrow morning for a tire balance. I made the appointment last week! Now that I have my mommy may I slip I can get that done too!

I reasoned and begged for the ECU reflash to the lastest calibration to no avail. I suggested there was rough idling at warm temps, plus mpg concerns (hit 13 again recently). *sigh* They just wouldn't do the reflash w/o a CEL.

The recall work took a few hours.

Got it today, too... glad I already took care of it. It was nice not to procrastinate for once in my life :)

My two recalls were handled last Thursday. I also complained about low gas mileage so they reflashed me to "L" (confirmed). I don't have enough miles on the tank yet to determine if the reflash helped.

So, Doesn't a loose gas cap cause a CEL?
Any thought if that would be enough to get them to flash the ECU. Since they need to hook up the ECU to read the error anyway?

It is possible to throw a CEL, then have it go away..

I told them I threw one, and that my gas mileage had gotten worse. They ran a check and actually did find an error code despide the CEL light not being on. THey gave me the reflash and fixed a faulty O2 sensor.

I did throw a CEL light over a month or two ago and didnt have it checked, but it went away.

How long does the computer remember the error codes?? especially if you have reset your battery several times?

jdl - I would just leave the gas cap off and drive for a while or undo a vacuum hose or something and then take it in and say now it threw a CEL, will you reflash the PCM! I wouldn't be nice about it either. It takes all of 5 minutes to hook it up and reflash it.

guy321 - You may still have it stored in the PCM. Error codes are stored and usually don't come off with out resetting the PCM with a reset tool. You should be fine and I would have it checked out.

Hey guys how do i know if they did my damper?

I could care less about the airbag and i got the ECU reflashed, but i still hear a slight rattling noise coming from the tranny anyway can see this so called damper?

Someone said the damper "looks pretty cool"

Edit for the guy below : i just got mine today hold on for another few days, or just go to your dealer and get it done with out the letters

Hmm.. Ok well I'm booked in to Hine tomorrow morning and I'll see what they say. They did the oilpan replace for me prior to there being a fully-fledged tsb on it (they came on here and looked at the posts). So I'll see how I go with the PCM recalibration.

... OK well I dropped it off at Hine today (and get to drive around in a lovely Neon for the day)

On the service order the service writer, who was helpful and a nice guy to boot, put:
"Customer states check PCM updates"
as one of the work order items, so I guess we'll see what transpires from that.

I recieved my letters on Monday....

I hope they don't mess it up because everytime I go to the dealership something goes wrong....stuff got stolen, they put the wrong oil in, I have a ding on the door but I can't prove it was them....

When I called for my appointment for friday they said they need the car for the day even thought the letters say 2 hrs then I told them that I needed a car because I have to work and they told me to wait until I get there on friday to talk to the service manager.
Why do I have the feeling that I am going to get screwed again...................

Wish me luck....

I told my dealer I was getting low mileage and had heard of the ECU reflash available. Also said I flooded the car once and wanted the hot plugs. I was surprised I didn't get a hassle.

Just picked up my baby and everything was done without a problem! :)

Yeah I just got my car back from Hine and it's got the new "L" code on it. Also did the airbag and damper recall. I didn't notice if the trans rattle was gone in neutral yet...

I think the key is not to try and convince them - I just told the guy that I thought there was a new PCM calibration and he said they would hook it up to the machine and see what the story was. He mentioned something about needing a symptom for them to get paid by mazda, so I wasn't sure how it would go, I just left it at that. When he called me to come pick it up, he said they reflashed it with the new PCM calibration.

geez Simon, I'm just cursed. But I just got a note from the service manager at Hine, saying "thanks" and to let him know if there's anything else he can do for me -- think I'll just print your last few entries here and see what he says ;)

Yeah the service manager asked if I wanted a car for the day and they hooked me up with a shiny red Neon...

jdl: it's possible they did the reflash on mine becuase it had the oilpan issue initially... Although I'm sure if you're nice to the service writer and tell them that you'd really be super-happy with them if they just checked to see if the PCM is at the latest calibration or not, and if it's not - what would be involved with getting it updated, you might get some satisfaction...

Took mine in yesterday.. in by Noon, out by 4pm.. they didn't have any Mazda loaners, but they hooked me up with Enterprise.. drove a 2004 Taurus w/200 miles.. felt like an old fart. Picked up my 8 the minute they called.. did Airbag and Damper.. all good now.. :D

Wow, I am surprised it took so long for the airbag reacll work for some of you, mine took less than 15 minutes.
Then again, when they replaced my front light due to the fact some idiot hit my car, they gave me one with a dead bulb, so I guess that makes up for it.
And as to the question if our dealers offered us loaners... hell yeah, when I informed them that the light they put in didnt work, they drove from Surrey to Richmond (about 40 km) to pick it up while I was working, left me a loaner, and had it back in 2 hours (just wondering if they did much speeding while getting it back and forth  )

The airbag fix is quick, but the damper fix is fairly complicated. Look at the TSB.

Because of this forum, I learned of the recalls and have already had the work completed.

However, I still haven't received any written notice from the dealership regarding the recall.

I've seen that people in Canada, MI, and VA have received notices, but it's strange that the notices didn't all go out at the same time.

Did anyone in the Northeast get the recall notices?

Hey guys,

I just bought my 8 (am picking her up tonight) just wondering about a few things....My vin falls in the range of the "potentially effected 8's" regarding the damper and airbag recall..i discussed with the dealer and he mentioned that all their cars have been addressed....should i ask to test drive the car before accepting it as mine(it currently has 100 miles on it) ...according to the dealer they drove it from another dealer to their lot, also, what specifically is the "M" / "L" flash that I keep hearing about?...is this something i should discuss with the dealer as well?

flatso

per the TSB all cars need to have the recall work done before they can be sold. It is a safety issue so I what he is saying is probably true because of the liability issue. You really can't tell from driving it though...perhaps you could view the work order?

I'm in Texas. As of today (May 6) I still haven't received the recall notices. I get touchup paint, I get surveys, I get all sorts of 8-related stuff, but no recalls. I already know about the problems. But Mazda doesn't know that. It doesn't inspire confidence.

that's really strange..they should definitely have notified you about it, my dealer has the part on order and will install it in a few days, they said it was ok to drive in the meantime...but if your vin falls in that certain range you should definitely be notified....

Here's an excellent link to service bulletins and recall notices:

http://www.finishlineperformance.com/rx8/docs/index.html

The service bulletin on "engines cranks/No start" last updated 4/12/04 says that all vehicles, even those in for unrelated problems or normal maintenance should be updated to the "M" calibration. Anyone having trouble getting this done may want to print a copy of the service bulleting and take it with you to the dealer.

The damper recall only applies to vehicles with manual transmissions and only those produced between 4/10/93 and 8/29/03.
