Yesterday I got my custom catback fitted. The people doing it were exhaust technologies, in Adelaide. These guys have quite a bit of history with both race/sports cars in general, and rotaries in particular.

My setup is s Stainless steel job, with 3.5 inch tapered tips, and twin JunBL mufflers. The owner of the place (Mark) worked on the car himself (with assistance) and impressed me with his knowledge of all things exhaust related, and his superb welding skills.

The JunBLs sound awesome. There is some popping when decelerating using the gears. The note is quite deep and extremely distinct under acceleration. At cruising, you are aware that the exhaust is different - but there is certainly no droning.

Driving down Rundle St last night (legit reasons - not for the infamous "cruise"), drew a lot of response from people walking up and down the street, and other cars going the opposite direction.

Pictures to come.

Oh yeah, my butt-odometer says the car is faster too. At low revs it is hard to tell the difference, but above about 4000 the car is (subjectively) quicker. It certainly reaches higher speeds in first before the redline beep.

Nice exhaust dbb. I bet it will be weeks before you turn your stereo back on again. :D

Just one question - how is the above ^ possible? You might feel like you are getting to redline quicker, but the speed in each gear is fixed by the gear ratio in the gearbox........

Ok, I feel like I'm getting to redline quicker. It's more noticeable in second than in first. I haven't been to redline in third this week ;-) I should have used "acceleration" rather than speed - my bad.

Not bad mate.
Looks good.

I agree with Wildcard, you won't be turning your stereo on for a while......the exhaust note is too intoxicating. :)

Nice one!

What size intermediate pipe is that?

Cheers,
Hymee.

I have no idea what size intermediate pipe it is. I'm going back there early next week for a follow up, so I'll ask.

That really looks low at the middle centre of the car. Does it drag over speed bumps? - looks like it would.

Kev i have already scrapped the rear black bumper , so id bet you will definetely scrape that exhaust system over stepper .driveways and road speed bumps .

My brother just saw and drove my car for the first time last night. I turned the stereo on and he immediately turned it off - he just couldn't get enough of that sweet rotary sound! I told him I find myself driving around with the stereo off a lot too. And that was with the stock exhaust . . . just wait 'till I get a cat back!!

re : the lowness of the exhaust. It's not that low, the camera angle may have been misleading. I've driven over speed humps already with no drama. I'm already careful with spoon drains etc due to the general lowness of the front of the car.

re : the noise. Most people think it sounds awesome. A couple think it sounds a bit noisy. When driven hard, the note is higher in pitch. When driven normally (ie. change to second about 45-50) in medium traffic, there is popping when changing up from 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I need to do some high speed driving at lunch ( might pop up the SE freeway for a while) to see if there is any droning at constant higher revs.

I took the car down to City Mazda this morning for the recall / 20k service. All the mechanics loved the sound of the cat-back.
