View Full Version : Chicago/Burbs Owners!
TiTaniumRX8 03-03-2004, 10:48 PM Hey i know for a fact now there are tons of you all here! I've seen and heard of alota you.
Im from Long Grove/Buffalo Grove, I drive a Titanium 6spd 8... if ya havent seen me you've heard me, i installed the Brola on my car.
So who's from the area? How you all liken your 8's?
hppy4u 03-04-2004, 09:02 AM Not sure if you are the same guy, but this past weekend was a record turnout of RX-8s in a long time. I saw four different cars this weekend. Titanium at Best Buy, Silver on Prairie, Silver with spoiler at Famous Dave's BBQ, Silver on Milwaukee (probably the same one from Praire), and a Red one on Rt. 60.
I was the guy in a yellow RX-8...so far the only one around in the local area. I am in Vernon Hills.
omagic 03-04-2004, 10:07 AM I own a winning blue rx-8 w/ spoiler in Downers Grove. I bought my car last wed and have yet to see any other rx-8s while driving my 8. =( ill keep a look out!
TiTaniumRX8 03-04-2004, 10:45 AM happy4u, did i pas you? i waved.... right by best buy i think it was me
hppy4u 03-04-2004, 11:35 AM Titanium,
Nice to meet you. I am glad to see that some of the RX-8 owners are on this list. By the way, congrats on the Borla exhaust. If I ever run into you again, I got to see it in person. I kind of have my heart set on the Greddy but I am in no hurry since my wife is already complaining about me having way too many expensive hobbies. Just need to find a way to spread the purchases out ;-).
BoxerGT2.5 03-04-2004, 09:32 PM I think I have seen maybe two other 8's so far. I live in Bartlett and work in Downers Grove. I'm sure I will see more once it gets nice out.
whosyourbaba 03-04-2004, 10:06 PM I live in chicago near chinatown and comesky park area. I've seen a couple at malls. I got the black one w/o spoiler. Waiting to buy MS wing. Yea, i bought mine in oct, but once the snow started hitting, it went into the garage.
omagic 03-04-2004, 10:56 PM MyRx-8yourcar where do u work in DG?
G8rboy 03-04-2004, 11:11 PM Hey there... I'm usually found commuting between LITH and Schaumburg during the week for work. I'll keep my eyes open for you...
I saw both a blue and a silver this past weekend around my neck of the woods... must have been the great weather we had. The blue had blue tinted license plate covers front and back- I thought that was a cool way to make them blend in (since I don't bother to run with a front plate :).
TiTaniumRX8 03-05-2004, 10:29 AM I just saw sum1 a red one at Hawthorne mall w/ the appearance pkg. and sum nice rims (i think Maz speed).... wonder if he/she is on the thread.
BoxerGT2.5 03-05-2004, 12:53 PM I work off of Highland and Warren in a medical building.
omagic 03-08-2004, 09:47 PM alright i spotted my first 8 today while driving my 8. it was on 355 i was heading north the other 8 was going south. it was kind of near roosevelt rd at around 5:30pm. it was a winning blue 8 like mine. i wonder if that 8 belongs to this forum?
jenya 03-10-2004, 11:46 PM Hey, I live in Lakeview (around Belmont and Sherida) but my parents live in Buffalo Grove, so I'm there almost every weekend. I have the red 6MT RX8 and I love it!
Has anyone flashed ECU to bring the mileage up? I really want to do it, cause i'm getting about 14 mpg in the city :(((
TitaniumRX8MD 03-11-2004, 05:18 AM I have and you do see an improvement in mileage and idling
G8rboy 03-11-2004, 09:26 AM I just filled up this morning- my first full tank after the 'L' reflash came out to 17.97mpg. I had been averaging 16.5mpg over the last 6 weeks fairly consistently, so there was a improvement- not huge, but still noticeable.
cruzdreamer 03-11-2004, 10:00 AM I am always in the Algonquin, Crystal Lake & Lake in the Hills and I am also cruising in the Schaumburg area a lot too. Anytime you guys want to hook up and meet eachother let me know! Love my 8. Just had the recall done for airbag and an unfortunate first flooding experience thanks to the hubby!!! I asked the dealer to flash the ECU but he asked me what my gas mileage...I said between 13-15mpg and he said well, they are getting 15-16mpg on average anyway and he would do it only if there was a bulletin from Mazda about this. I tried. It bothered me that the sticker says 19mpg and it's acceptable to get 13-15mpg. I'd be ok if it hit 17mpg since it varies on conditions, the way you drive etc. Hope to see an improvement come warmer temps. Hope to se ya around....if it's me I will wave!
am i the only one with black around here? well if you see a dirtyass black RX-8 with salt debris and water stains, well, that's me!
anyhow, i was riding the train from Chicago back to the burbs and over in Downers Grove i swear i saw a dropped, Mazdaspeed kitted XMen blue RX-8...i passed by too quickly to get a real good look cuz i was on the train and had just woken up but i'm about 90% sure it was what i think i saw...does this belong to anyone here?
I'm in the Schaumburg area.. Velocity Red w/ spoiler.. usually cruise around the area.. so far the only 8's i've seen around is a silver one and a yellow w/ gunmetal or black wheels.. any of you going to the rotary revolution in April?
BoxerGT2.5 03-14-2004, 12:24 AM So when are the NW burb/Chicago 8's gonna hook up? I know everyone wants to get into warmer weather....get there snow tires off...add some new mods to show off. I would think like Woodfield parking lot would be a big enough place (and central). Lets do this!
Master Fuol 03-14-2004, 08:44 PM Hey, hppy4u I wonder if it was me on 60? I have a Red GT. I work in Vernon Hills and go up north on 60. I haven't driven it much since Nov. I can't bear to drive in the salt. Now that it's getting nice, I plain to drive to work every day it doesn't rain of course. She doesn't like to get dirty either.
Audioslave8 03-14-2004, 09:26 PM I live in vernon hills, i dont own an RX8 but ive seen a yellow one alot latly and a titanium once in a while
hppy4u 03-15-2004, 10:55 AM Glad to see so many RX-8s are on this list.
Master Fuol= If you see a yellow 8, that would be me. If you were real lucky this morning you would have seen my car being flat bedded to the dealership. Car would crank but engine wouldn't turn over. Hope to see your car on the roads...it's been pretty nice cruising around in the wet/snow :-)
Audioslave8= That yellow 8 was probably mine since I am local and spend a lot of time at the usual spots...ie Circuit City, Best Buy, Westfield etc.
jenya 03-15-2004, 03:24 PM Hi guys! I own a red RX8 with one of the common fuel consumption problems (the most I got once for highway driving was 15mpg).
Where can you flash ECU in Chicagoland area? My Autobarn Evanston dealer refused to flash it even though I said I had Check Engine light on...
Where can I do it???
HiX1276 03-16-2004, 01:36 PM hello everyone
anyone interested to buy a Clifford matrix rsx3.5 remote start for a decent price. I got it as a gift but I already have an Audiovox remote start on mine. I prefer selling it around the Chicago/NW burbs so I can deliver it right away (drive it to you) and will save you guys S&H. I work around West Dundee but live in Chicago. PM me for questions. Thanks

Sounds good to me- this weekend doesn't look great, but the following weekend (27-28) would be great. Also looks like the weather is warming up into the 50's next week...
How's that work out for everyone?
whosyourbaba 03-17-2004, 12:58 AM hello everyone. Nice to meet you all. I live in chicago, near comesky park area and chinatown as well. Weather stinks right now. FREAKING SNOWED!
TitaniumRX8MD 03-17-2004, 01:00 AM I live downtown and heck we should all get together some time
billzrx7 03-17-2004, 01:50 AM Im sure you guys probably have an rx8 club for the area in mind but I would also like to ask you to possibly atend some of the chicago rotary car club events we have planned this year. just because we have a 7 doesnt mean we dont love the 8s ;)

I'll second your dirty BB. Obviously they don't stay clean for very long, especially in this weather, and my dealership does a crap job when they clean it up.
I'm out here in the southwest suburbs, work in the west suburbs, and will soon be moving to the South Loop neighborhood. I'd love to hear the Borla in person, although I need to work on being a better stick driver. Don't want to amplify my mistakes, ya know. :(

I left long grove after living there for 14 years in 97. I miss chi-town except for the winters...

Ug! That's right, it's spring, so I need to find a bike rack. seems like an odd mix, but I have to get the bike around somehow, now that I don't drive an SUV anymore.
TiTaniumRX8 04-08-2004, 05:54 PM man, get one for the back of the car (if possible)... i saw this one w/ it installed on the roof, wasnt too hot, but still sexy.
hppy4u 04-08-2004, 07:37 PM Hey guys/gals,
I am probably the one that's been seen recently (yellow RX-8 w/bike rack). Glad to see that there are other owners on the road who are on this list.
mkboy1313:
If you have a nice bike pay the extra amount of money and get a roof mount rack. I was in the same boat (ie. not sure about spending a lot in addition to not sure how the car would look with a rack) and almost purchased a rear mount until I realized two things. The first is that the rear trunk seems to be made of aluminum (ie crushes real easily) and a few days before I decided on the roof mount I saw a car next to me get rear ended by the car behind him. Nothing dramatic but a 4000lb SUV going 5 mph will do enough damage to any bike. In addition to removing the bike out of harms way, you can lock your bike up to dissuade any petty thieves. Kind of a nice feature if you decide to meet up with people somewhere and can't dispose of your bike at home.
If you purchase the rack check out www.rackattack.com. I got mine there with a fairing, yakima wheel holder and Rocky mount rack for a good price. Plus they ship for free. If you get it locally you are looking at $500-600 for a one bike set-up. I think I got mine for around $350.

MBL-RX8 04-08-2004, 10:29 PM 8's seen so far...
-Red one parked on street in Lakeview
-Yellow one near Argonne on Cass Ave.
-Winning Blue at corner of Yackley & Warrenville in Lisle
-Winning Blue heading west on I-90 near Hoffman Estates
-Black one driving in a parking lot in downtown Naperville (I actually yelled nice car at him since he had his window down)
I've seen a smattering of black ones all over town. I work on Warrenville Rd. in Lisle, so you'll see me prowling around during lunch. :D

How's the parking in South Loop? My buddy and I are looking at a place there and it looks like one of us will have to park on the street.
vel525 04-09-2004, 02:46 PM well, if you want indoor parking it's somewhat pricey. can range from $150-$230. outdoor parking is cheaper. street parking can be a PITA because you have to move the car during certain hours at most places.
MilesBFree 04-09-2004, 04:27 PM Yes, there is a Chicago club for all rotaries, for which many of the area RX-8s have signed up for:
http://www.ScuderiaCiriani.com/chicago_rx7
Cheers,

Audioslave8 04-10-2004, 11:39 PM I saw a red RX-8 parked at E-skape in buffalo grove at around 11:00pm. Anyone on this forum?
hppy4u 04-24-2004, 07:52 PM Hey guys/girls?
This is Dan with the yellow RX-8 occasionally with the bike rack. I just wanted to say sorry I didn't get to meet any of you in person...but I will keep an eye out for any RX-8s around the Libertyville/Vernon Hills area.
I am just writing to say that I have sold the RX-8 and just signed the papers for a new 2003 Lancer Evolution. So if you see a white EVO, give me a honk and I will try to keep an eye out for any RX-8s. I miss the car already and am suffering from seller's remorse but I am sure the EVO will also be fun in it's own right.
PaulieWalnuts 04-24-2004, 08:11 PM Good luck with the EVO. Why'd you sell the 8???
hppy4u 04-25-2004, 03:30 PM Hello PaulieWalnuts
It was just certain personal preferences that came to a halting reality the more time I spent with the RX-8. I used to own a '97 Eclipse GSX (turbo + all wheel drive) and spent a large amount of money to improve on the handling, performance, interior, braking etc to make a poor man's porsche.
I thought the aftermarket for the RX-8 would have been a little more promising to make up for my certain driving preferences. The more I read the more disappointed I became with the car's potential...and for a $30K+ car I was expecting a little more driver satisfaction as a baseline.
Admittedly, some of the deciding factors were the ever increasing list of TSBs, extremely poor fuel economy (I was averaging approximately 9-11 mpg), soft suspension for a sports suspension, and the inconsistent engine power. It seemed as if the car felt relatively strong some days and extremely weak on others. Additionally, I lost confidence in the car's reliability when my engine flooded, fortunately for me this occured at home but I had to miss a day of work.
On the plus side I thought the aesthetics and interior fit and finish was stunning. Additionally, I thought overall balance of the vehicle was very enjoyable when pushed to it's limits but saw that it would need a large investment to achieve the handling I was originally thought to believe it would have.
I had one of the earlier cars so your mileage may vary. If you are a current/potential owner please take my opinions with a grain of salt. Having owned the car for nearly six months, I firmly believe the car should have been priced starting at $22K and maybe maxing out at $25K especially, since the many of the cosmetic/interior, fit and finish, and performance figures were comparable to cars found within that price range. The $27K I spent on the car was becoming harder and harder rationalize...

Hey Dan, quick question. I need to get a bike rack for mine, now that I've switched from the SUV to the 8, but I know nothing about them. Any tips on rack buying?
PaulieWalnuts 04-25-2004, 11:17 PM 9-11 MPG and the other problems sound like there was something wrong with your car. One of the lemons maybe. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Good luck with the EVO.
hppy4u 04-26-2004, 08:37 AM mkboy1313,
If you look into a bike rack, bite the bullet and purchase a roof mount rack. The rear of the 8 has either an aluminum/thin steel trunk that may not tolerate the weight of a rear mounted bike rack (ie the trunk will most likely crease/dent in addition to the rear bumper where most rear mount racks will brace against). If you choose Yakima, I have some barely used Q-clips (clips that mount to the roof and hold the cross bars) for sale. I will be holding on to the rack but need new clips since the EVO requires a slightly different set. If you also choose Yakima, I have had a lot of experience so I could guide you along as well with the install/set-up.
Otherwise the only two reliable roof mount racks available for the 8 are the Yakima and the Thule. At the time I purchased mine, Yakima was the only one manufacturer who actually had first hand experience with the 8. They sent me pix of their test fit and guided me along with the install. Their customer service was extremely helpful and patient with me as well. When I finished the install, they even inquired on my progress a day later to make sure I was happy and asked if I wasn't successful they would make some calls and try to find a local shop to help me out. Fortunately, I didn't but at least they instilled in me a lifetime of commitment.
The cheapest place I could find for the rack was www.rackattack.com
wayneside 04-28-2004, 11:41 PM i'm from texas but i'm always in the addison area because my best friend lives there...my 8 is awesome but i hate the fact that i have to always rev so high to get going (fast)...otherwise an awesome car...love the sound of the rotary...

MBL-RX8 05-04-2004, 09:25 PM So there I was sitting at the light of Southwest Hwy. and 131st St. in Palos Park, and I get beeped at by somebody from behind. In the turning lane, a sexy Ti Silver pulls up alongside with a grinning little girl staring at me from the passenger seat! I didn't have a chance to respond as the driver got the green arrow.
If that was anybody on here...*BEEP* back to you!
PaulieWalnuts 05-04-2004, 10:10 PM MBL-RX8 - I've seen 2 silvers and 2 reds but haven't seen you in the area yet. I'll be getting a black one but in the meantime if you see someone in a beige Millenia giving you a thumbs-up, it's probably me.
MBL-RX8 05-05-2004, 09:32 PM Very cool! We'll have to meet up and take a twin BB picture. Any other Chicago BB's interested in meeting up and setting a Guinness world record for number of BB's in one picture? :D

Adamrotor 05-06-2004, 10:34 PM I saw a blue 8 this week but the guy is not on the forum, he was some asian dude but had exhaust and intake done, he tried to race me but i am just breaking hehe, but he showed me his power on the streets. Also we were cruising down the street side by side blocking traffic a prefect KODAK moment:)
