I placed a deposit with a dealer here in Portland and when I called back two days later to get my order number the sales guy told me that he couldn't get one. That is to say that there isn;t one.

Has everyone here who has ordered gotten an order number?

On a related subject, do you have any recommendation for a competent dealer in the Portland, OR area? Preferably not Herzog, or Tonkin. The sales lady at Tonkin told me that the RX-8 may not be coming out until September, and maybe not at all, so they would NOT be taking pre-orders...

I just looked at my deposit receipt, and what I got was a "control" number. It's a 6 digit number. I am going to call the dealership and speak with the manager to find out what the deal is. I was so excited about the car I kind of pluncked down the $500 without asking a whole lot of questions... :)

i have mine ordered at herzo/meier. i have yet to get one of those order numbers. as far as competent dealer, i wish i could help you. for better or worse i'm sticking with herzog. i trouble finding anyone ther who could help me and eventually had customer service at mnao get someone to call me and take my order. when i called tonkin the person there i talked to called the car the r s 8 twice. the person to talk to at herzog or anywhere else would be the internet sales person/ manager. they are the only ones that understand the ordering process for the rx-8. i think you are out of luck doing a pre-order now and getting one before september. herzogs allocation is 2may 3june and 2 july. my understanding is that those are all taken now. but you could check with them anyway. they may be holding one or two for themselves but you might talk them into ordering one the way you want it. just don't let them screw you with a non refundable deposit or charging you over msrp.
if you search my posts you can read a rather lengthy report on my problems with h/m and tonkin. i just haven't found an alternative to dealing with them.

I placed my order with herzog-meier two weeks ago. My sales guy says that I am number six on their list.

I just spoke with the internet sales guy over there and he says that pre-orders have been placed based on that list. He says their allocation looks like two the first month, then three, then two. He still can't give me any confirming order number, though.

Mazda is saying first cars in late May, but the dealer guy thinks June. That gets me a car in August...

With my Audi lease up at the end of April, I guess I need to find something else to drive in the interim...

If your dealer has placed an order, he should be able to give you the order number. Here is an example of one that happens to be for my car: 200304001299

I have my order # now : 200304000544. My sales manager says the odering information sent to Mazda does not include an email address for me, the customer. I assume at a future date we'll be able to access tracking status via an Internet-based Mazda website. I am sure that Mazda will make sure get made aware of this somehow when they have it ready!

How long did it take you guys to get your order numbers?

I have had mine ordered for almost 3 weeks now and I don't have it.
