my dealer has advised me against changing my oil at 5000k/m (which i wanted to do) given that he tells me the factory oil supplied with the car is "friction modified" and specially designed for the first 10000k/m and SHOULD be left in the car until 10000k/m.

i wanted to give my baby fresh oil at 5000k/m for plenty of reasons , some of which are to get rid of nastys floating around from the "running in " period.

any thoughts?

Tell him to cut the crap and the customer is always right..

Oil change ( with the right oil ) can only be good for the motor :)

Hmmm... sounds like BS to me.
As far as "friction modified" oils go, I believe that to be Castrol Magnatec with its "clinging molecules".

An oil change is always good for any sort of motor IMO.

I don't pay too much attention to these Mazda guys anyway since it's scary that I know more about some things than they do.

I'll be changing mine when it gets to 5k. :)

A whole lot of crap, and should make you sceptical about believing anything this guy says.

First, many of us 'early adopters' had to change our oil at or before 5K in order to have the revised sump baffles fixed (problem with early 8s) and no-one from Mazda suggested keeping our original oil, AFAIK.

I have always had interim (5K) changes on my cars. It's the best way to ensure the cleanest and freshest 'friction modification' Sheeesh!

SIMPLE A WHOLE LOT OF.

I have been told the same thing by my dealer as I wanted to change my oil at the 1000Km mark. they said they won't change it till 5000km. I can understand where they are coming from. there are running in oils but I wish they could put new running in oil in at 1k but they probably don't have access to it.

Mine gets its 1000km service next week and the dealer WILL be changing the oil.

I always change the oil at 1000km with any new car as while everything is new I'd expect there to be a fair bit of metal in there.

Sounds like CRAP to me but there seems to be quite a simple solution... Tell the dealer that to get your business you are asking him to renew your oil with 'whatever specification oil Mazda suggests is necessary up to 10,000'

That way your reny gets fresh lube and your dealer is happy he is doing the right thing.

For information, please ask him what the spec of the 'run in oil' is and why its not in the handbook.

If it turns out to be the BS it seems to be, may I recommend a call to the dealer principal. His business model is set so that your service needs over 80K will deliver him >3 times the profit that the sale gave him so he'd be interested to investigate anyone putting that future revenue at risk!!
