Found a 2005 MT Shinka asking price is 15,995, was wondering what a good price to start bargaining at. Also i've read through the forums and i know to get a compression test, ask for the carfax and try to get the service records if available. Anything else i should look for or ask for? Also will the carfax show if the car has been to the dealer for the recalls?

No the Car Fax doesn't always show all the recalls. I looked at a car fax for my own car, and it didn't show the clutch pedal recall or the TPMS software recall.

FWIW, I bought my 05 GT with 63k on it over 2 years ago for 13k out the door from a mazda dealership. They gave me the history they had on record and compression numbers. They had it listed at 15999. You should be able to do way better than their asking price. If not, walk. They have become much more affordable since i bought mine.

Indeed.

Edmunds has a similar price http://www.edmunds.com/mazda/rx-8/2005/tmv-appraise-results.html

19K is way over priced.

That's kinda pricey,
you can easily get an 07 GT for around that price.

I emailed the dealer asking for carfax, compression test, and if they will take 13k so we'll see what they say. And here's a link to the car http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/ctd/2518159023.html

Well the that didn't go well, the dealer was pretty bad a little whole in the wall. The salesman kept steering me away from the carfax and they didn't want to budge on the price. Looked at a 2005 touring with 55k miles mt, we'll see how this goes.

Any dealer who would balk at a carfax is a dealer I would not do business with for any used car. He is likely hiding something from you about the history of this car. Find your RX8 elsewhere dude.

I've seen '05 Shinka's with half that mileage going for $13k USD.

there are a number of posts where people list what they paid for their car - Mine was an '07 GT with ~23k miles, and I got it for just a hair over 18k including tax, title, fees, etc. (the dealers asking price was 19k+Tax, title, fees, etc.)

$16k for an 05 with 63k miles on it is way too much in my opinion, shinka or not. $13k sounds a lot closer, so I'd start at by offering $12k and see where it goes from there.

That price is crazy. One of our local members just bought a clean 07' GT 6 speed with 30k on it for $14,000.00. Another, Cornholio135 paid like 13k last year for his 06' Shinka with 30k and a new engine in it and his Shinka is absolutely showroom perfect inside and out.

Well everything checked out on the 05 pearl white I paid 15k out the door lots of extras on the car have to pick up the receipts and service records today. Might have still paid a little too much for the car but this was a one owner car with all the receipts on everything he did and all the service records since he bought the car. Thanks for all the replies and input, i'll have to get pics up once i take some loving this car after driving it 2 days

Congrats dude. Post up some pics.

I'd pay a little extra for a car with great maintenance records an only one owner. How many miles on it?

But... WHERE did they buy these cars? Just take a look at craigslist in a variety of cities, and you'll see the difference. Check out the following examples:

2009 GT with 22k miles in NJ for $18k (http://newjersey.craigslist.org/ctd/2526529408.html)
2009 GT with 8k miles in San Antonio for $19k (http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/ctd/2492170123.html)
2009 GT with 16k miles in Portland, OR for $25k (http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/2505745195.html)
2009 GT (automatic!) with 29k miles in Portland, OR for $23k (http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/ctd/2526428454.html)
2008 GT (sport!) with 45k miles in Seattle for $19k (http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ctd/2524696783.html)
2009 GT with 15k miles in Atlanta for $25k (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/ctd/2525634608.html)

See what I mean?

Yes, location is very important, I agree. my car was purchased in northern New Jersey, about 1 hour away from New York City.

This is when tools like kbb.com, nada.com, edmunds.com, etc. all come into play to make sure you are getting a good deal for your geographical location. prices people are asking on craigslist is not a good tool to use for measuring the cars value, I could very easily create a post asking for $23k for my car as well, that doesn't mean that's what it would sell for.

Dude did you get a compression test before you bought the car ? I sure hope you don't just get carried away without thinking here. With that mileage on a used rotary it doesn't matter how clean it looks and what extras he gave you. What matters first is the condition of that engine. Get that compression test done ASAP . Hope it checks out ok, but if it doesn't ,most states allow you to return a defective car within a few days of sale.

We welcome you to the RX8 group, but don't be blind to the reality of these cars if the previous owner didn't properly care for the internals of the car, no matter how great it looks outside. You may pay for your rush to buy, I hope not. And i am sorry to say you paid way too much for this car with the mileage. You came to this forum for good advice, but you just bought it anyway. Why bother asking ?

If KBB and Edmunds appraise a 2005 Shinka in the mid-$16k range (which they actually do), that's not too relevant if you can't find one in your area for that price.

Sure, I only picked one example (the first 2009 GT I saw) from each location... Obviously, it's not a full sample set that one would need to draw a solid conclusion.

But I do know that I looked (off and on) for more than a year for my RX-8, and there's no way I would find one in the Pacific NW for prices that compete with NJ and TX.

Yes i got the compression test done before signing, I test drove around 10 in the past month dealt with about 15 cars salesman which was fun. I know all internal parts on these matter more than any thing on the outside. I wouldn't put this kind of money into something i didn't feel would last.

Well if you did all your homework and testing of the car, then best of luck to you . Expect the normal replacements going forward with any RX8 with that mileage.

Hey we all wish you well here as another RX8 owner, but you will have to live with the fact that even for California you paid WAY TOO MUCH for that year and mileage. Oh Well, it is YOUR money.

Good luck to you and be prepared to start replacing all the things that will start to go with that mileage.
