Lots of new owners lately, and lots of new threads that seem to discuss topics that are in currently active threads. Maybe it is time to re-consider adding a 10 post minimum or something preventing new users from creating threads?

This has been suggested before but never happens. This should be a requirement, it will also keep people from joining just for the purpose of scamming people in the for sale forums.

Pretty much all it would accomplish is getting the new guy to post quick useless replies 10 times. If someone isn't going to read threads before posting the same question, I'm not sure there's anything you can do about it.

There are just some people in this world who want everything handed to them, and aren't willing to put in the least amount of effort.

Found another forum which, in part of the registration process, it actually asks 2 questions that you have to select the appropriate drop-down. Their questions were largely stupid, used as an anti-spam measure, but the same functionality could be used to actually have a bunch of new owner information sitting there that they have to select the right answer for.

Sure, it wouldn't keep out the people that have trouble understanding that they have the same number of fingers on their hand as they did 5 minutes ago, but for the people that are actually joining to ask real questions, it would give them a good jump-start. And it would keep out spam bots(to a degree). And would mitigate some of the scammers.

Have them answer questions around how to search via Google, site rules, basic oil or ignition questions, etc... Even 5 questions could make a big impact and cover most of the critical points.

Try and get an account over at www.corner-carvers.com, they make you read a whole page and answer questions. Getting an account makes you feel special. the people are assholes for the most part but they know their shit.

This is probably true. Many that first come here have problems with their car and are looking for answers. They would start asking their questions in a thread that doesn't have anything to do with their problem messing up the direction of the thread.

IMO this is no different then attempting to herd cats.

What about creating a section under the general section for newbies. Basically those who are between 0-15 or something posts can create new threads there. This way it serves the purpose of not littering developed threads, while still giving new users the opportunity to post a "HELP ME NOW" thread.

If you don't like what a person posts, don't answer and/or put that person in you ignore list (found in your Control Panel).

at this point.... why not just do away with the whole post count thing anyways.... its pretty much worthless at this point......

Hmm..I kinda like the post count minimum to start a thread-it's on several forums I frequent, and it cuts down on the spam/crap substantially...

Exactly, but it could be taken one step further in allowing those that dont meet the minimum post count to be only able to post in a "new users only" section. This way for those that need urgent care, they can still post, and it is in its own isolated section so that if it actually becomes something worth keeping, it can be moved to the proper section. The 'new users section' can have a very low thread count so that we arent taking up any more space on the server, and the threads that didn't actually present useful information would eventually be filtered out.

We could just all ignore the dumb threads and let them get buried without an answer. They'll eventually search for an answer or just give up and get a different car. :dunno:

It's almost always the same people posting so it can't be hard for us to quit.

A not so dick way, is for the first person to just post the links to the common threads that are always posted, and then we ignore it.

It might take a while to catch on, but it will at least cut down on the constant flaming.

I think what people also forget is for anyone else who actually searches, now you have a zillion threads talking about the same crap and you have to sort through them because 99% of them are newbie slackers not wanting to search, and for those who DO search well you've just showed them it doesn't pay to search, just do what they do and this is what's happening.

Ignore it all you want but next time you want to use the search function yourself and come across as many threads that it feels like opening your door and walking your face into a damn cobweb of capital W.T.F. you're going to after a while wonder why in God's name did you bother and feel either a) guilty about wanting to post a new thread just to get the damn answer and do it anyhow or b) just stay silent and waste the next couple hours of your life trying to find the original answer you were looking for in the first place.

A website I'm part of for gaming restricts your ability to post or let alone even enter certain threads until you go through training to qualify. Perhaps restrictions from allowing Newbies to create threads until it shows they used the search function so many times might help, just a thought.

I like this idea. rx7club seems to run a lot more smoothly because of this. I agree with having to answer some questions before you register. It will cut down on the trolls and may make people search if they only have one question and don't want to spend time making an account. On mazdaspeedforums.org you have to answer some questions before you join and I haven't seen any problems with trolls. I like their "panic button" too but thats another story.

I own a 2011 Civic Si and need a part. I can't access the FS area until after posting 50 posts or some such BS. Never mind that I collectively have several hundred thousand total posts on various forums. For a determined scammer making 50 BS posts is no big deal. For a normal person who ogherwise has no iterest in participating it is too much hassle and not worth the effort. This is what PayPal and common sense is for. You can't legislate stupidity and retardation.

That point is understood, which is why a few posts down I mentioned that it would be a nice feature to have at least a section where the new people can post regardless of their post count, this could also be the case for the for-sale threads.

My only argument comes from the standpoint of the application and network processing of things, which I apologize, but my profession has made these types of thoughts almost second nature.

Encouraging people to set up ignore lists, as well as not regulating threads that are senseless posts by new users is not only taxing on the server as the complexity of SQL queries increases, but also taxing on the storage space available. I am sure that the hosting admin can agree, that this forum is probably not cheap, and as the demands for more storage increase, it will only get more expensive.

The forum already lacks in proper memory management, which can not only be seen through the sluggish performance as of late, but also at the collapse of various "archived" threads.
