View Full Version : Whoever has seen the Mica colors
B-Nez 01-25-2003, 10:49 AM This question is for all who have seen velocity red mica or nordic green mica in person!
Does the mica reflect more at certain lighting/viewing angles? That is, does the mica seem to "glow" more than the base color when the light hits the surfaces from a certain angle, or when the viewer is looking from a certain angle? Or do the cars pretty much just look red/green no matter what?
I really love some of the close-up photos that show the mica flecks, and am hoping they present optical effects, or are apparent from a wide angle, also.
Thanks.
Grimace 01-25-2003, 10:57 AM Well, I haven't seen the red or green mica, but I've seen the Spicy Orange mica paint on the Mazdaspeed protege up close. Viewing angle doesn't matter as much as the type of light hitting the paint. When the sun hits it, wow! What a difference. The orange turned to gold, and was very bright. If it was cloudy, it looked like a regular orange colour (still nice). Under neon lights, it looked pale (almost peachy).
Hope this helps.
Puppy1 01-25-2003, 11:36 AM I saw the Velocity Red Mica on the car at the L.A. Autoshow. The color is much better in person than an any photo. It is full of mica that is why it is so hard to photograph. The light changes the appearance of the car dramatically.
The color reminds me of candy apple red, except not as deep. I'm sure the candy apple cars I've seen have spent a bundle to get that DEEP color.
The color on the RX-8 is not nearly as deep, but beautiful nonetheless. I was so close to going back and changing my order to red. But since I'm 40, I didn't want people to think I was going through some kind of mid-life crisis. I decided to stick with conservative Titanium and Tan. If I was 5 years younger Velocity Red easily would have been the color I would have chosen.
Digisan 01-25-2003, 03:54 PM Mid-life crisis? LOL I never really understood that. Some would say that if you are middle aged and buying a sports car/sedan (pick one) that you are going through a mid-life crisis, so what does the color have to do with it? Some would say that a sports car is an extension of one's ego too. I think all of that is a bunch of crap. I really enjoy sports cars and could car less if anyone else liked it, including the color. Titanium is still a good choice :)
I ordered mine Black and Black. If only the rims were gunmetal.

RXhusker 01-25-2003, 03:56 PM I saw the Velocity Red at Detroit. What an awesome color! I actually had my dealer on the phone to change my order from Titanium to the Red but I gained my senses and cancelled the change. I too had visions of my wife accusing me of having a mid-life crisis (37 yrs.). The RX-8 isn't a mid-life crisis but a celebration of getting an RX-7 for my 17th birthday 20 years ago. I have missed it since I traded in for a 1990 MX-6 Turbo (also a great car) but it didn't have that extra something special of the RX!
I took a poll of friends who went to the show with me and all but one voted for the red -- the color is that good in person. But you know what -- the Titanium is also an awesome color and probably fits my personality, etc. much better than the Red. IMHO opinion the Velocity Red is the best color and the Titanium is best at showing the lines and nuances of the car -- and without drawing unwanted attention from our friendly law enforcement officers.
PS - I only saw the color sample of the Nordic Green Mica (12" square of actual paint - not in brochure) and it is also a great color. Lots of gold -- similar to the Red but not as flashy -- will look great with the tan inserts -- will look like a Jag with those colors.

Forty and mid-life crisis!!!
Hand me a white cane... I'm 48 and I'll be getting yellow.
Elara 01-25-2003, 09:09 PM The red mica was amazing in person, I have to agree- kind of a cross between candy-apple red and fire engine red, in metallic. There was no question it was metallic, either.
I was going to go with titanium until I saw the Nordic Green sample at Detroit- it looked really dark to me, and had lots of metallic flecks, especially with light shining directly on it. Kind of understated, I thought. So now that's what I'm going with.
Mazdaspeedgirl 01-25-2003, 10:10 PM I haven't seen it in person, but hopefully they'll have the Velocity red at the Houston show when I go this wednesday.
A friend of mine said the Velocity red does sparkle brilliantly when the sunlight hits it. He described it as a candy apple red, of sorts. yum! :p
B-Nez 01-25-2003, 11:07 PM Thank you all for your responses. Yet another smile has been brought to my face. I ordered mine in red on the 8th, and have no intention of changing the color.:D

exxxcellent! We still haven't made up our minds on what color we want either!
must....make...choice....arrrgg!!!
Heavenscent 01-26-2003, 12:48 AM Awesome colour choices! However, I've noticed that many have gone the Titanium Gray and Sunlight Silver route.
Velocity Red sounds enticing....very loud
Brilliant Black constructs a subtle by design look...
Lighting Yellow is the next CYM colour....very nice :)
Winning Blue : featured on the X-Men 2 movie (ithink)....surely an identifiable asset in the near future....
Current favourite: Velocity Red :)

ironqqq 01-26-2003, 03:45 AM I can't recall that far back, when I saw it at the L.A. Show.
in the pics you can see how the paint changes depending on the depth and the angle of light reflecting. Surely, as you get closer you can see the mica flecks.
the paint job is very brilliant and beautiful. IMHO, the Red mica is the best color you can get for the RX-8, it's the most beautiful paint job I've seen on a production car. I would get red, but unfortunately it's not my type of color.. it just doesn't match my personality.
here are some of the pics I took at the autoshow.

The X-Men car is Mutant Blue, a subtle different color. If Mazda was selling it with Mutant Blue, I'd go for blue, but I think the Winning Blue is not quite the right color for me. I'm going for Velocity Red (with red leather interior)!:D

Your forgot the Nordic Green Mica! I'm personally not a big fan of green but I seemed to recall seeing a picture of it somewhere and it was absolutely gorgeous.
To tell you the truth the 8 has some of the best colour selections that I've seen on any car. It's not that there are so many colours to choose from, but the shades of every colour are spectacular.
laferle 01-26-2003, 04:17 PM I saw the Velocity red at NAIAS and it looked great, but I didn't seem to notice it reflecting anything exotic under the light. Maybe it was my angle? Does the Velocity refract a different color or what?
TIA
IWANTanRX8 01-27-2003, 10:57 AM I didn't notice the Velocity Red Mica reflecting back any other colors. What I did notice is that you can tell from a considerable distance away (30 feet maybe) that it's a mica paint. Very impressive in person. Pictures simply cannot do it justice.
The red-on-red RX-8 in Detroit is exactly what I will get....if I order one!
