View Full Version : What do you guys think of the new Ford Mustang?
Squidward 02-26-2004, 05:36 AM Just curious..
Personally I like it... it's very retro... Add the super cheap price, it might be my next daily driver... Interior is cool too.

Spin9k 02-26-2004, 05:49 AM Perhaps it looks better in person, BUT as a 50+ yr old I've seen SO many Mustangs in my life (say 30 plus yrs of them), I'm simply sick of them all looking so all alike as they do.
And therein lies the problem.......In the end I think Ford's idea of retro new cars is a bankrupt idea.
Look (the styling) at Volvo, at Saab, at Pontiac... they seemingly are destined to repeat the mistakes of the past, and remain forever stoggy replica's of what has come long, long, long ago.
Yuk!
Look at the 8, and the 350Z, they're the fresh, new, and destinctive styling ideas that (to name just a couple), that are the way a NEW car SHOULD be and look.
Hanzo 02-26-2004, 05:54 AM Like the retro styling and looks like the interior has gotten A LOT better. I like it.
mmmdowning 02-26-2004, 06:01 AM I like it. The retro is a good idea. I wish they would do the same on the camaro.
Speed-ER doc 02-26-2004, 06:40 AM I want to like it, but the there are a few things that bug me.
You really don't want shiny stuff on your dash. That metallic sheen, while looking better, is functionally potentially dangerous.
The gauges are TOO retro. Reminds me of the 60's, but in a bad way.
Shifter still looks too far forward. Ever driven one? Funny how just a little awkwardness becomes annoying. The 8 fits so perfectly around you, I cannot be satisfied with lesser engineering and ergonomics again - I have been spoiled.
Hopefully these things will be fixed by the time the Mustang SVT Cobra comes out late 2005, that is the one I want, but not if these issues persist.
J.U. Stone Day 02-26-2004, 07:49 AM It's already out of date and it hasn't even come out yet.
But it IS better than the current Mustang that is totally flawed.
Aratinga 02-26-2004, 08:05 AM God, I love the way it looks! All the retro cues are there but the car is still thoroughly fresh and modern. Ford seems to be delving into its past for the best things it's ever come up with, and I for one am delighted with the results!
Have you see the commercial where the new Mustang, the GT, and the concept Cobra are racing around the streets? (Filmed right here at Terminal Island and Long Beach, btw.)
Trilogy vid (http://www.magiccitymustangs.com/images/tms/2005/pics/Trilogy.mpg)
Of course the Cobra really isn't moving, but still.
I love the Mustang... but I'd do anything for a GT. ;)
jonnyb 02-26-2004, 08:11 AM i think it looks really good. i have a boner for old cars.
Overport 02-26-2004, 08:41 AM i like it.....i think it looks alot better than the generic looking mustang of today.
emailists 02-26-2004, 09:15 AM When I went to the NY auto show (I think over a year ago) specifically to see the RX8, I saw the new mustang, and thought it was perhaps the coolest looking affordable cars I had ever seen- Maybe I even liked it a little better than the RX8- although not as fuctional with the 4 doors. Anyway they said it was about a 14 month wait till it came out and I couldn't wait that long since my Probe GT was costing alot in repairs.
I picked up the 8 in August and then gave it back due to buyback right before X-mas. (long story- I was getting 11MPG that's why I returned it- too bad Mazda wasn't upfront saying they would have an ECU flash at some point in the future- I would have kept it- their loss)
Anyway after I got my check back from Mazda I was free to choose any car- and of course was much closer to the Mustang release date and thought I might wait to see it and drive before deciding between it and another RX8.
When I saw the photos of the car they actually built for production- I thought- "wait - that's not even the same car I saw at the show"
They took out almost every styling detail the car show car had- Of the syling cues that were still there- they were simplified and made more plainly. My decision was made then and there- and now I have a week and a half old RX8 in the exactly color and trim level I had originally purchased. I even felt kind of dumb- not going for a different color- or features- but for me, the GT Titanium with chaparell interior and no other options was ideal- OK I did order the MP3 player- but that;s it- I didn;t even like the spoiler.
(BTW After I gout my check from Mazda, I also did test drive the G35 - but in auto trans- it was nice and had much better pickup than the auto RX8. But I thought it looked a bit plain compared the the RX, and felt more like a coupe than a sports car, IMO, and was like 4 grand more.
mikeb 02-26-2004, 12:31 PM My friend's girl wants this mustang
when will it be ready for sales?
anyone know a price?
My favorite mustange was 87 to 93 in year
This car doesn't really do it for me.
allstate 02-26-2004, 01:20 PM IMO I think it's just simply uninspiring. It looks OK...that is until you see about 50 of them on your way to work everyday.
Booster MPS 02-26-2004, 02:00 PM allstate - you took the words from my mouth. Gonna be cool until you see a ton of them and then pick up a couple from the Hertz rental counter. The 8 has a higher kewl factor by far (and hopefully that will continue to last)
mdsbuc 02-26-2004, 03:16 PM Reminds me of my old 1969 mustang but with a solid modern punch to it. I like it. I think Ford got this one right but they really blew it with the new t-bird.

Outlaws eXtreme 02-26-2004, 03:22 PM I actually sat in one ... and I have to say it was very uninspiring. If you thought the G35 interior was bad.. this one is just terrible inside. Exterior looks great.. interior bad.
i like it...it looks like just another new Mustang, which isn't all that bad...i like Mustangs over Camaros and always have
some thing i don't like but will probaby get used to are the round lights in front and the seats being all red like that...plus the stitching on them is hideous, looks way too retro
mpt_yellowRX8 02-27-2004, 07:42 PM I am waiting for the 2006 Shelby Cobra to come into the market. The new Mustang makes me feel great when I look at it, but if I wanted a retro mustang I would get a 65 instead of this new one that tries, but barely misses. Oh well, I'll get to see a million of them here in Louisiana anyways, it is the car of choice for every high-schooler around here and will probably stay that way.
THe concept looked great, but the production car with the little rear side windows isn't doing much for me.
racerdave 02-27-2004, 11:09 PM I agree with Ike 100%
But even so, it's better than the previous Mustang.
Hey Dave, did you make it to the Milwaukee autoshow? I went tonight, and talk about disappointing... I used to go to the chicago autoshow every year and loved it, this was basicly like a dealership meeting... Hardly anything that you couldn't just go and look at on a dealer lot.
Highlights... very few, but the Dodge Magnum was pretty cool, and I liked the Scion XB, which shocked me. The Chrysler 300C was a bif disappointment, looks mich better in the mags, and the Ford 500 is a joke and Ford is insane if they think it's going to help revive the company. The Saab 9-2 was fun, and it was nice seeing a Ford GT in person. Other than that it wasn't worth the price of admission.
bubble 02-28-2004, 01:25 AM The Ford Mustang GT is good and bad at the same time. The retro style is loved by some. I prefer a new and up-to-date model but retro is fine. What sucks about the Mustang is Ford used the previous chassis for like 30 years and the new chassis is a retro model of the old one.
When I read the review about the new body I thought it would be great. A lightweight chassis that is more "European" in design is great. The New Mustang weighs about as much as the previous. This is a big let down for me. The only thing holding the Mustang back in my opinion is the curb weight. however, the Mustang GT will haul nuts! It will also be cheap. I hear it will cost about 25,000. It will be the American Muscle it once was. It will seperate the Dragsters from the WRXers IMO. No offense, Ike. The WRX has been the king in the 25,000 range. I think the new Mustang will allow some versality.
Baller 02-28-2004, 01:26 AM RETRO is cooooool!!!!
JimJimElf 02-28-2004, 10:50 AM I like the exterior styling of the car but the interior just has to go. I don't think they did that good of job as they should of. Maybe its just me seeing all that red. I hate red interiors. I would prefer black or a real dark navy bue. That and it looks like it is missing some comadities that are found in new cars.

No offense taken, I just don't see it as being a whole lot different than the previous gen. Mustang. This isn't a bad thing, I just think it's going to attract the same audience it always has.
racerdave 02-28-2004, 12:31 PM Ike... no, if I can't go to the Chicago show, I don't go. :D

That will be my plan of action from here on out...
J.U. Stone Day 02-28-2004, 03:09 PM Isn't a new WRX STi ever coming out? Or is Subaru going to keep the car looking the same another 10 years?
racerdave 02-28-2004, 03:19 PM ??
It was a new model for like 2001 or 2 and they just freshened the headlights.
??
Speed-ER doc 02-28-2004, 03:32 PM I liked the original headlights better.

Ummm it was a brand new model last year and has been out less than a year...
JSE RX-8 02-28-2004, 08:34 PM the fastback concept looks similiar but was better than the 2005 model. the concept reminded me of the '67 shelby GT500
Racer X-8 02-28-2004, 10:45 PM Got stuck having to drive one (parents) in the 60's. Didn't like it. Moved out.
Got stuck having do drive one (moved in with fiance) in the 90's. Didn't like it. Sold it.
No thanks, looks too much the same, just that it's new. Ford knows how to make a sports car. They ought to just do that. Also, where do the strakes go?
RX-GR8 02-28-2004, 11:07 PM i'm into the retro look.
