I'm currently looking for a replacement for my rx8. I've loved the car thus far, but I'm thinking its about time for something different. Either one of the cars I'm going to get will be a coupe with a 6 speed transmission. So what do you guys think which is a more suitable replacement for the 8?

335i by far. The market is huge for the cars. The N54 and N55 turbo inline 6 have enormous potential and you are looking at MASSIVE power increases with simple chips like a JB (reversible). The build quality also eclipses that of a G. Honestly, I wouldn't even compare a 335i against a G37, I would compare a 328i against a G.

 

I agree and would not be surprised if the overwhelming majority of responses are similar.

Stock vs stock I would pick the 335i. If you're into mods, the 335i will be a much better car. As mentioned above, the 335i engine is a great engine and has a lot of potential for mods and a great market for those mods.

Keep in mind, you should drive both and consider things that are important to you. If know you wont be modifying either car, then I'd say test drive both and weigh the things that are most important to you. If you're still torn after that, then you should consider the input you get from this thread. If you think you'll do any modification, the answer is VERY VERY VERY clear.

 

335i for sure. It performs better if I'm not mistaken and looks better imo.

335, absolutely. my father has a hardtop 335 with the juicebox ecu flash. makes like 380 hp and torque. amazingly fast yet very civilized.

tried "racing" him from a stop the other day just for fun. was pretty pleased that he didn't pull away too fast from me until he got out of the car and said he was doing like half throttle....in his automatic... sigh...

 

thanks for all the input guys I was pretty sure I wanted the 335i but thought I'd see what you guys thought, does the reliability scare any of you on the 335i I know they have hpfp failures but thats warranted for 10yrs/120,000 miles if I'm not mistaken so I'm not to worried about that... I've been researching them on the bmw forums and it seems like the normal stuff you see on all car forums the guy with the broken car is far more likely to come and post than the 10 that are running perfectly fine so nothing to out of the ordinary over there... but I know there are a few people on this forum currently driving 335i if any of you have any input on this matter or have any other comments on the 335i I would greatly appreciate it.

And to monchie I would gladly keep the 8 and just go FI and buy another car as a DD, but unfortunately my financial situation won't allow that at this time. Hope to have another rotary car in the future as there is something very addicting about the sound and feel of the rotary as it seems to effortlessly rev to 9k rpm

 

G37S is betterer.

I prefer NA motor and dislike the weird electronic differential in the 335i over the mechanical LSD in the G37S. Now if they put in the the old E46 M3 engine in the 335, that would rock.

335i coupe looks better though.

I've read both overheat very quickly at the track.

 

I've read quite a bit about HPFP failures in the 335i.

 

I don't care for the increasing levels of ego-emissions of German cars. (This after having one or another continuously from 1983 - 2007). It's one of the main reasons I got the RX-8 over a CLK.

G37... These people are crazy. I've driven both extensively, the newer 335i's look wonderful sound(no where near as nice as the g though) amazing, etc, etc.. but you will find after owning one for a little while that it is depressingly dull... and everybody has one. I live in Berkeley, CA where Weatherford BMW sells more 335i's than any other car. so unless you plan on getting a Dinan package on there, just stick with the g37. all around it is a better car, and coming from an rx-8, you wanna stay feeling unique right?

EDIT: g responds very well to tuning as well, more potential out of the g's motor than the 335i's, just more expensive to get there; it is a skyline after all.

M3 on the other hand...

 

I just came from a 08 G35S sedan...only car I have had for 3 years in 45 cars. Only one issue in 3 years of ownership - nav locked up. I had tons of mods - see pic.

I was going to get a 2011 G37S coupe...but wanted to write a check - so I bought my 08 RX - with 6k on it. For less than 1/2 the price of a new G.

Now to my point...the G37S loaded - is no more than 45. I dare you to get a 335 with as many options for anywhere near that. And Infiniti dealers rock and you always get a loaner.

I love the 335 - but not for 15-20 over a G37S.

The best point you have is the fact that the 335i is common. Even still, that's not a very good argument as it's not like G's are even uncommon. Just less common than the 335i. I'd imagine the G is the best selling infiniti at most dealerships.

I've driven a 335i and it's not a dull car by any means. I'd definitely say it needs at least a tune, but it's far from dull, even in stock form.

I don't think either car has been out long enough to say for sure which has more potential. I drive an 11 year old car that still has various kits being developed for it and is still seeing increases in output. Plus, I think that's irrelevant to this particular discussion. If he was looking for a car to push the absolute limits of, he would have indicated so. Based on what we've heard so far, it's safe to assume the car will remain stock or maybe some tuning/common bolt on type mods. If that's the case, the 335i is absolutely without a doubt the better car.

Many actually regard the 335i as better than the M3 if you intend to do any modifications. Obviously you could modify the M3 as well, but you're looking at a lot more money. The 335i with a budget for modifications is a much better platform to work on, in my opinion. The current generation of M3 is not quite as impressive as some of the past generations were.

You got that right. The engine noise alone would turn me away from the infiniti.

 

I used to like the G35 sound until I saw someone call it a "dying cow". After that, the sound was ruined for me...

I think virtually all 3+ liter V6's sound goosey.
I agree the L6 engines do sound better.
