yesterday i was waiting at the lights as usual with the car in neutral...and when i went to push the clutch down the engine started revving....lifted my foot and it stopped...went to put the clutch down again and againing ...high revving....now the first thing you are going to all say is that i was pushing the throttle...well i am no goose!....i ended up turning the car off...waiting a few seconds and then i started woth no problems...

is their a direct connection between the throttle and the clutch???...i am no mechanic but i have never experienced anything like this.........

and no i was NOT pushing down the throttle...

any ideas or shall i head for the padded room

sounds very strange. I cant imagine that there would be a connection between the throttle and clutch. I would be interested to hear what the more mechanically minded members have to say about this

I'd be making a call to the service mgr....

This car has a fly-by-wire accelerator if I'm not very much mistaken, so there would be no mechanical interaction b/w the two pedals...

You may have a chaffed wiring loom???

Exactly, not a mechanical connection but perhaps an electronic glitch? Better get that checked out. Can anyone say Audi 5000? (Typing as images of beautiful RX-8's unintendedly accelerating into a brick walls flash across my mind's eye)

Has it occured at all since? Worst problems of all are those that can't be replicated. Certainly not something I have experienced.

I'd agree with the others: a trip to the service dept, but the problem is that if you can't replicate it, they will give you that "padded room" look. I have had the same experience with the cruise control "surge" :confused:

Well I can vouch for the cruise control surge, but that is not helping is it?

I had an old car once that would only show the correct temperature on the gauge when the foot was on the clutch. I had just done a full resto/rebuild, and I left 1 earth strap off. The clutch release lever/throw-out bearing was acting as an earth momentarily, letting the gauge display the correct value!

I'd say there is a small electrical problem somewhere.

Well, the PCM has an idle correction routine that takes the clutch switch into consideration.
Mine has some wild idle swings if I play with the clutch pedal while the air pump is still going (up to 30 seconds after a cold start).
The problem may be there or with a throttle stepper motor that is not 100%.
It is likely, however, that a hard reset of the PCM will allow for it to relearn the throttle actuation numbers.

KARCPA do you have matts? If so are they secured under the drivers seat with a peg? If not they can slide forward and trigger the accelarator sensor. Pushing the clutch is probably causing them to move.

Hmmm...gremlins at work! :)

Spoke to my cousin who is a rotary buff and mechanic and he reckons it sounds as though it could be something electrical or possibly even the clutch not engaging and disengaging properly.

I've got no idea, so that's my cousin's two cents worth.
Strongly advise Mazda check it out and at least give you a explanation.

the matts getting caught is a logical explanation though i have pegs which secure the matts....having a look at the pegs it looks like they have come loose and may have come forward..and triggered the throttle sensor...well done!

has not happened again.........

I cant take any credit for discovering that, someone was unlucky enough to find out about it while on the move. You can read the whole story on the UK Owners Club website (http://rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1021&highlight=matts). It takes until page 3 before the solution was found!
