Any rx-8 owners around the Baltimore area?

I'm in Baltimore, but don't know any other RX-8 owners here yet. Closest other owners I've met are fellow members of MSCCW (Mazda Sportscar Club of Washington). I'm originaly from DC so I'm used to heading down there to hang out with friends and family. Up here in Baltimore I'm a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University.

Yeah I haven't even seen many rx8's around baltimore. I've been working up in Baltimore for two years now, since I graduated from college. I'm originally from the Ocean City area. Have you attended any of the rx-8 or mazda meets?

I've attended some general Mazda events with the MSCW in DC and met a few other RX-8 owners (as well as a whole bunch of RX-7 and Miata owners). However, I haven't been to a "pure" RX-8 meet, or any meet in Baltimore (missed one or two due to finding out too late or other commitments).

Hey guys,
Sionce you are talking about meeting other owners... we've just confirmed an informal meeting of RX-8 owners in Tysons Corner VA Sunday, Feb 29th at noon. See the Va/DC/Md meet thread for details.

Hope you can make it!

Hey hey,
Another Baltimore RX fan in the hizzouse.
If we reach any sort of critical mass, we just might be able to organize a tech-night like the MSCW does down in NOVA. I for one could really learn a bunch from anyone out there who tinkers and tunes!

Cheers,

...I'm new to this forum, and for that matter, I'm a new RX-8 owner!

Just wanted to chime in as another B-more RX-8 guy. I have a Titanium Gray 6-speed, about 5 weeks old. I live and work in downtown Baltimore.

If there are any plans for a local meet and greet, let me know! I'm glad to be part of the "Rotary Revolution"!

Hello! Man, is it just me, or are the RX-8's really, REALLY scarce around here (Baltimore city/county)? Seems like I've never passed one to wave or beep to...and lots of people keep coming up to my car like they haven't seen one before?

Just odd...I've seen way more 350z's and even G35 coupes around.

Hope to catch up with ya' one day,

It's not just you my friend there are a few up here in hardford county. but we are few and far inbetween there are a ton more 350's and G35's around I still get hey there's an RX-8 look. Still get the looks at the light I think its because they haven't really had a large campagne showing them off to the public. I do have to say it's nice having a car that not every other tom dick and harry has feel more like an idividual rather than a bandwagon kinda person.

Heya,

Glad to hear we're still a rare breed all over Maryland! Have to agree with you...one of the reasons I fell in love with the 8 was its uniqueness. You should see the looks I get outta' people when I tell 'em, "Oh, it doesn't have any cylinders...it's a Rotary."

Oh well...we should really try and get a Maryland RX Club going, you think? It seems like a cool idea on many fronts from the other "state" clubs out there. A club can get group buys, discounts, organized drives and events, etc.

At any rate, if you see a Titanium Grey 6-speed zoom-zooming down 95 from White Marsh to Baltimore...it could be me!

Hey ArvinC,

Are you the guy who lives in the appartment building right near the Hippodrome & Lexinton Market? I belive I met you the other day when you chased my friend up the parking lot (a black 325i). I spend most up my time in Baltimore up neer JHU in Roland Park, but I'm originaly from DC. We didn't have much time to talk then (had to get back to work after picking up something my friend left at home), but if we're reaching a critical mass of owners here we could setup a meet. I'll also probably attend the next MSCW meeting down in DC/VA. There are plenty of RX7 and Miata owners down there, but only a few RX8's (two others that I have met, but I haven't been in a few months). I think the 8 is still fairly rare in the whole region, not just Maryland/B-more. Probably as the weather improves, we'll start seeing more :).

David,

Yeah, that ws me! It was fun wheeling through there...almost like autocross. It was all in fun though...didn't want to seem like I was a d!ck.

Anyway, we all should definately try to organize some meet whether it be a Club event or just some parking lot time. I am so surprised that there are not that many RX-8 out there, though I have another owner here at the hospital I work at and saw another one (black) shooting up the JFX with me on Sunday.

Perhaps, as you've said, the nicer weather will bring more 8's out on the road. The car still remains unique though...had two people stop me at parking lots this weekend to talk about the 8.

Enjoy your drive...

Hey guys,
I just wanted to let you know that I too am in the Baltimore area. I live in Carroll County but I work in the Towson area and can be seen commuting up and down 83 in the mornings and evenings. I too rarely see other 8's on the road. I can pretty much count on two hands the number that I've seen. I've seen a red one on two different occasions in Towson (I'm pretty sure that it's the same one because the windows were tinted). I think I've also seen the black one too but I'm not sure it's the same one. There's only one other owner that I've had a chance to talk to and he was in Hanover with his blue one.

Oh well, I just wanted to say hey!

Another Baltimore area owner.
Your right .....
Unfortunately, I rarely see one on my daily commute down 95 and the Capital Beltway.
My first trip in the 8 …. Yesterday, I watched one family go by … young boy in the back seat eyes/mouth wide open entranced looking at the 8. Despite the rain, a Mustang moved over three lanes pulled along side, again mouth wide open with a look of wonder ….she almost hit me … don’t think she had a clue what kind of car I was driving. Big grin on my face. What happens when the Sun comes back out?

Hey hey,
It almost seems like the numbers are growing up around B'more... I personally will be unable to attend RevItUp, but would like to suggest that we start rallying NOW for June at VIR and August at Summit Point. Summit Point, obviously, is a little easier to fit in. Both of these events are sponsored and organized by Mazda Drivers, LLC (http://www.mazdadrivers.com/) who set up a FANTASTIC event last weekend at VIR. If you want to see what your car can do without local law enforcement's heads turning, and in a safe environment, these are fantastic opportunities. The August 28/29 event at Summit Point is also this year's Mid-Atlantic RX-8 Festival, so lets represent Baltimore!

Cheers,

i'm in Glen Burnie, and i drive my 8 (when it's not snowing or raining) on 695 and 295 everyday. i occasionally cruise up thru B-more way, but the roads are sooooo bad, i try to avoid it! plus, i'm still paranoid about parking the car where i can't physically see it for any length of time. all that said, if a Baltimore-area RX-8 club is formed, count me in.

By the way...

Is anyone else going to the MSCW event tomorow? I'll already be down in the DC area for a meeting, so I'm planning on attenting.

On another note, I'm upset that I won't be able to go to the year's first MSCW Auto-X on the 18th because I'll be out of town, but I HIGHLY recomend it to other 8 owners. I did one at the end of last summer and it was a BLAST. Also the MSCW events are recomended over SCCA events because they have MANY fewer people (mostly Mazda people but a few others) so you get to do a LOT more runs (much more bang for buck), and the whole atmosphere is much more laid back and relaxed (good for us newbies). I'm guessing that many RX8 owners got their cars late enough in the summer (or in the winter) where they haven't had a chance to attend an event like this. You can't really appreciate your 8 untill you feel how amazing it is in more demanding conditions than your normal daily drive (or even weekend fun). In the auto-x (or on a track) the suspension livens up and takes on a whole new character which is a delight. I finaly understood what those car magazine reviewers were talking about when they were glowing about how "neutral" the 8 is. This car is amazingly controlable in all conditions, and a JOY to drive.

PS. I'd definatly be up for a closer meet for those who wish to stay in MD. Perhaps someone should just throw out a sugestion for a time/day and we can start negotiating?

...how about we try and meet on a Saturday or Sunday for some sort of group meet and drive? Since the weather's starting to get better, I've been itching to get out someplace where there's some twisties to really get to know the on-road feel of the 8.

Maybe some route off of 70 in Howard and Harford counties? Or even up 83 past Cockeysville/Timonium, heading toward PA?

Have to admit...a line of 8's would definately be quite a sight! :D

Baltimore area RX-8er's,

Seems like a few folks here were out of town or busy this past weekend, but the weather was awesome!!! Down here in Glen Burnie, the Mustang crowd was out in celebration of the pony cars' 40th. Classic cars held an informal parking lot show on northern Ritchie Hwy in the KFC parking lot. The ricers are always, always at McD's, Wendy's, and Checker's, and sometimes down at the Pep Boys. There is only one other RX-8 I've seen cruise the scene, besides me.

Just the thought of a bunch of RX-8's hangin' and cruisin' together would really be a sight to see.

what color was the other 8 I get down in Glenburnie alot. I have a nordic green 8. I live up in BelAir and do get down that way a fair amount. Just curious if it was me i have seen a yellow 8 down that way.

Hey Jay,

That yellow 8 you've seen may be me! I've seen another yellow that occassionally drops by, but he's got 19" chrome wheels and a sticker for his tattoo shop on the window. that aint me! I will definitely keep my eyes peeled lookin' for ya. there are faster cars on the strip, but i dont think there's another car that turns more heads.

'course, i AM biased! haha!

I have some plans for mine but I refuse to start to do much modifying till the till I get over 50K on it or 4 years just so i don't void anything thing incase i do have a warenty work problem. but I'm getting some designs and ideas now and putting away the funds so I can do it once and do it right.
right now tent and wheels are whats going to happen to my 8 you customize yours at all? or plans to?

drifter_d
04-21-2004, 08:29 PM
hey fossil!

i do have some minor plans now to tweak the car a bit. tint goes on this saturday, and i'll also prob order JIC FLT A2 coilovers. the 8 doesn't have much wheel gap, but it does look tighter when slightly lowered. the reason i'm going with coilovers over lowering springs is that i want to drop the front more to make it even with the rear. with a spings only set-up, the front will still have more gap than the rear, and not look 'balanced', IMHO. then move onto more suspension components. i've been monitoring the CZ stages threads and watching others' experience with it. i'll probably take any mods in stages myself, and will most likely go with a cat-back exhaust systemand intake. nothing too nuts just yet! with a few re-calls and re-flashes already on the books, i agree that the warranty is a thing best held onto! at least for a while.

what wheels we're you looking at getting?

HAGO,
drifter d

fossil187
04-22-2004, 05:38 PM
I will be doing the cat back exhaust. I'm not sure about the intake i wouldn't mind seeing a proformance spec on a car before and after I did a intake on another car I had and honestly it didn't meet my expectations. As far as wheels I have looked at sevral kinds I just am having a problem making my mind up. Seems to be my biggest delima with this car what i want to do with it. I have ordered the clear marker lights. I am considering taking it up county car and having a flip down DVD player installed were the dome light is so when i go to a car showor somthing outside and you are sitting with your car my GF and i can put the front seats forward and watch a movie :D or if i decide to take it on a long trip i can put the little ladie in the back and don't have to listen to her telling me how to drive. but other than that I will have a turbo or supercharger put on the car and major suspention mods but not till my warenty is up at the rate i have been driving should be in a year or two :D

drifter_d
05-09-2004, 11:10 PM
After listening to every exhaust clip I could get my hands on, and after reviewing owner's experiences with the exhausts they had installed, I made my decision. I contacted Vivid Racing and ordered the B&B cat-back. It should be here sometime this week, and installed shortly thereafter. Will post w/ pics soon.
