View Full Version : RX8 Mystery Tour Day Out
Rotaman 02-17-2011, 10:24 PM Thought I might as well start a tread on the RX8 Day Out, just so it was easier for everyone to see.
Plans are coming along well.
The day to circle on your calender is Sunday March 20th, starting at 10.30am from Hampton downs race track car park area.
I have booked the lunch stop for 10-20 people at this stage, but if everybody brings a couple of people with them, we might get more then that number.
Hopefully everyone is looking out for RX8 owners and letting them know that this event is on.
Just incase anyone needs to know, the morning run is going to be around 1.5hrs and the afternoon run should be around 2hrs.
This should allow time to have a nice long lunch break and for those that wanted to catch some waves and a swim. Hopefully we can get the cars all together and take some nice photos to post on here after the event.
Maybe someone might like to bring their video along as well and capture the ride as we travel along.
Anyway I'm looking forward to meeting some new people and having a good day out.
Regards
Rotaman
Brettus 02-17-2011, 11:08 PM Good work Roger

Rotaman 03-03-2011, 03:17 PM Thought I would remind everyone that its just over two weeks until the RX8 Mystery Tour.
Time to start cleaning your RX so it looks pretty for its day out.
I think by the time I get down to Auckland with all the road works around at the moment, I'll probably have to sandblast my car just to get all the crap off it.
Don't forget to bring your friends along for a great day out, you might even be able to convince them to buy an RX8 for the next event.
Remember if you see any RX8s around, let them know about the event.
The list of people ( cars ) coming is nine so far, lets see if we can get a couple more on that list, which would be great.
See you all soon
Rotaman
Brettus 03-03-2011, 10:23 PM There will also be a ...........................
Mystery RX8 related prize !!!!
Brettus 03-04-2011, 05:09 PM Had 'Four Guys' send out a message to all their 8 buyers (they sell a lot of them)- hopefully they will find their way to here .
sounds good :) 2 weeks to go
Miss8 03-07-2011, 06:38 PM Are we still going for 1 tank of gas?
ryandaum 03-08-2011, 01:14 AM What times it finishing and where?gotta work until 330..
Rotaman 03-08-2011, 03:00 AM Miss8 - I think one tank of fuel should be fine, depending on how heavy you are on the gas pedal. I have worked on the day being around 3.5 hrs of actually driving. Might be a little more or a little less.
If you are bringing a car full of people along, ask them for $20 each for a days entertainment. That would be a cheap days out if you ask me.
Hope this is helpful.
ryandaum - I don't want to put up the finishing place on here, as that would be giving away a clue for the day out.
So if you want to find out the finishing place you can give me a call ( 09 4098198 ) .
ianaguila 03-08-2011, 08:07 AM excited.....11 days to go....
sweetfa 03-08-2011, 12:30 PM Looking foward to this - Just noticed an 8 in the carpark across from our building - will drop a note over at lunch. Budgeted for 1 x tank to get there and back and 2 for the day.....
Rotaman 03-09-2011, 10:58 PM sweetfa if your car takes a tank of gas to travel from Auckland to hampton downs and back, then I suggest that it needs a good tune up.:Eyecrazy:, or its got a leak in the tank somewhere.:)
Is anybody able to take a video camera along for our Mystery tour? I know my video skills are hopeless, but I think it would be great to be able to have someone video our day out and post it up on youtube for other RX8 forum people to see what they missed out on.
Rotaman
sweetfa 03-10-2011, 12:10 PM Well I don't get to drive the toy much and when I do it's play time so .......
Rotaman 03-12-2011, 04:47 PM Only one week to go!!!
scotttnz 03-12-2011, 08:01 PM Only one week to go!!!
Woohoo
Rotaman 03-13-2011, 05:28 PM Hi All
Just a few things to remember to bring along with you for the RX8 day out.
1) A pen and maybe something to write on
2) A camera of some type
3) A map if you think you might get lost or gps
4) Money for lunch and dinner/beer at the end of the day
5) A tank of fuel
6) A passenger to help you with the clues and to help you have a fun day.
I have included 10 questions into the Mystery tour day out, which relate to the places we will be seeing, so hopefully a little bit of general knowledge maybe useful and make it a bit more fun.
If anybody can think of anything else, let us know.
Thanks
Rotaman
i'll be driving solo
i will be getting new battery for car on saturday

sweetfa 03-15-2011, 09:14 PM Definately confirmed - Although the toy is looking pretty dirty (THe wonders of living down a nice gravel road). Here's hoping for hot weather and a police free run.
Speaking of Which the Drags are on in the weekend at Meremere
Rotaman 03-15-2011, 09:19 PM Hay xcon, if I see any good looking hitch hikers on my way down, I might pick one up for you as your passenger. Whats your preference?:evil_laug Don't know whether my wife would be too keen on that idea though.
Brettus, I'm just confirming that I will be there, since I have the clues to the mystery tour with me, I better turn up.
I cleaned my car yesterday, but I bet that I have to clean it again by the time I get down to Auckland, bloody shitty roads up north.

thanks Rotaman,im pretty fussy with the passengers i carry
hehe :) few/many rules when having the privilege of being a passenger in the 8
Miss8 03-15-2011, 10:28 PM Hi guys, I'm confirming :D
Do you think it would be a good idea to give our cell phone numbers out incase someone gets lost along the way? Is there a specific point in Hampton Downs we are meeting at?
Rotaman 03-15-2011, 10:48 PM Hi Miss8
The plan is to meet in the first car park on the right as you get to Hampton Downs race track. I think its the park where the competitors would normally park their vehicles. If the track is closed and we can't get into the carpark, we can meet just outside the carpark on the roadway that leads up to Hampton Downs track.
If anyone gets stuck and can't find it, my cellphone number on that day will be 021 409 919
Hey Xcon I would only choose the best for anyone with an 8.:naughty:

thanks guys!
nzmkey 03-20-2011, 08:24 PM Thanks Brett and Roger for running the tour.
I just wonder how many people are interested to goto Hampton down for a halfday Skid Pan session. They have a slot on either Sat 16/4/11 & Sat 14/5/11 and it will cost $40-$50 per head if we have enough interest.
The skid pan session generally have two or more of below activities:
1-gymkhana in dry and then wet
2-free style - do what ever you like with the 5 cones on the pan
3-ABS/Safety demo
4-timed session
The event will be run by http://www.playdayontrack.co.nz/index.php

Miss8 03-20-2011, 09:34 PM Hey everyone thanks for a really great day I had lots of fun!!!!!!!
Got my dad to check over the car this morning and no signs of anything wrong so thats good news!! may have just been reflections from headlights :)
Sad news.. I sold the 8 this morning, very sad to see her go but I will buy another one one day!!!!!!!!!!
Brettus 03-20-2011, 09:45 PM Was great to have you along .
Shame you sold it :( At least you got to give it 1 last decent drive.

Shame. I hope you have the chance to get another one some time. Sometimes life just has other plans.
pottsy 03-21-2011, 03:08 AM Cheers to Brett and Roger. Awesome day out!
Rotaman 03-21-2011, 04:11 AM Hi All
Finally got back home tonight, so thought I better make a few comments about our day out.
First of all I wish to thank everyone who made the effort to come along on the day.
I think for a first event, it was a good turnout. It was a little disapointing that not everyone managed to finish the event, but I understand everyone has different situations and maybe we should have started the event an hour earlier.
Something I will take into consideration for next time.
As you will all see from the photos, the prize that some of you missed out on was a Rotor Clock, it was won by our Father and son team who managed to finish the event and got the most questions wright.
Good to hear that Miss8 got home safely and managed to sell her car with no problems. Hopefully you might buy another one sometime.
Fantastic photos from everyone, I certainly hope these inspire a few more people to maybe think about coming along to the next event.
Did I just say that, yeah well, I have been thinking already about another event.
What I would like to know is what did you like about our Mystery tour and what didn't you like?
This will give me a few more clues as to what would be good to see in the next event.
Please don't be afraid to give me your true feelings about the event, good or bad.
So far I'm thinking of a 2 day event over a 3 day weekend, this would give you a day to get home.
Labour weekend is looking good for me so far, and probably down in Taupo, so that we can get some more cars come to the event from around the country.
How about the " RX8 Nationals " or maybe someone can come up with a good name for the next event.
Anyway this may give you all a few things to think about.
Rotaman
I thought the event was really well put together – Thanks again, Brett & Roger
First time for most of us on a drive like this and I thought it was really good
Having a co-driver would have helped (will definitely try to have one next time) ,
Having no co-driver was little tough, esp not knowing those back road, but Hey, we got there in the end !!!
First time took my 8 for a run long as we did on Sunday
The windy roads were perfect followed by the straights
As Brett said, the traction control makes you feel like a good driver on those tight corners and turns
The few gravel roads kept us under the speed limit I’d say other wise ….
A 2 to 3 day tour would be good for the next time (Labour Weekend would accommodate perfectly)
Taupo would be perfect, good distance as well, central for most RX8 owners in the North Island
If route could contain windy mountains roads followed by the straights (take the back Roads to Taupo, if there are any :) )
“RX8 Rendezvous”
scotttnz 03-22-2011, 12:18 AM I thought it was a great day. If our original babysitters didn't fall through we probably could have stayed untill the end.
I like the idea of a weekend meet, but the extra cost of accomodation and fuel, along with arranging it around other commitments (like children!) may limit attendance. I would suggest that if it were to be a weekend that it be arranged in such a way that there was a "main event" on 1 of the days that people who couldn't come for the whole weekend could make a day trip of.
Oooooo......how about a "Rotovegas RX8 Rendezvous"
I liked the mix of convoy and solo driving. I thought it was good to do a bit of each.
I also like that my 8 seems to be running better now than before. Idling smoother etc. Maybe I blew out some carbon buildup, or maybe it just feels more loved ;)
sweetfa 03-22-2011, 12:55 AM We had a great day although I have to admit that a 13 year old was over driving by 3pm.
Loved the mix of solo and convoy and have to agree the 8 is now running really smooth.
Like the the two day event but again with three kids I'm limited to when I can attend so an entire weekend may be hard to make but on the plus side the better half after seeing the photos is really keen to come so maybe dumping the kids (Easier said than done) may be a go.
I think this was the first time I actually got to know my car and appreciate talking to you all.
The reason I brought the RX8 was simple - It's different and man when you want to play it does all that (except when being blown away by Brett ....not sure if the new kitchen will get in the way of a turbo)
Lets make the next event happen !
pottsy 03-22-2011, 05:59 AM Was a well organised and thought out day guys. Really appreciate the effort you guys went to.
Im with the others (^) that perhaps the next should be a longer jaunt/over night affair. I felt that I was only just getting used to my car in the afternoon.... tailing rotaman helped somewhat :D
Those who are coming from upper north / auckland / hamilton could have a planned route similar to sundays? The plan being to have a north island / national meet at mansfield along with tips on how to get the most out of your car, then a track day....
"National rx8 track day 2011"
bluerx 03-22-2011, 04:00 PM Thanks Rotaman and Brettus for organising the event loved every part of the trip and (sorry for leaving early I had uni the next day and was feeling unwell which made me skip a few days) anyway very well organised loved the staged and group cruise.
And did anybody else apart from sweetfa and scotttnz feel an improvement in their car mine feels completely different (worn in the tires and Prob removed carbon buildup), the car needed that trip was dying in auckland traffic.
Also will be keen for another trip/track day.
