Hi everyone,

Not sure if there was in introduction thread but here goes..

I recently bought my 04 Rx8 about a month ago and have had a few unfortunate troubles with it like the coils failed and melted the cat. So scary to see blue flames coming out of the exhaust! :flamed: now my 8 is running without half the cat (as half has been deliberately knocked out) - is there any harm in this?

And then in the mall car park a lady opened her door into my passanger side!!! So lucky that I saw it happen!

Now all sorted and loving it! what a HUGE upgrade from my integra.

Is there many people here from around AKL?

Hi Miss8 .
I'm from 'the tron' .
Ok to have 1/2 your cat knocked out but way better to do the job properly and knock all the guts out of it .
Otherwise you will end up with what's left in your muffler .

Great to see another Kiwi owner on here . Welcome .

Hey Brettus,

Thanks :) this site has proven to be a good read!

Maybe that is the case with my cat as that was the reason why my dad (a mechanic) smashed bits out of it in the first place so they wouldnt end up jiggling around in the muffler

Good stuff :)

I'm in East Auckland (Howick).

The only attention I seem to get is from 10 year old boys! LOL
Actually most of the women I know accuse me of having a mid life crisis, and their husbands\partners look on in silent jealousy when I tell them that my wife encouraged me to buy it. Most of them seem to wildly over estimate how much it cost too, which is fun. :icon_tup:

Hot pink and black don't really match. Why don't you try a lipstick red? Oh yeah and neons are illegal in nz. Have dealt with traffic related offences in my line of work. Not to say that you couldn't have a switch nearby that dimmer dial for the dash lighting....Or to replace that annoying blue back light on the instruments....

Yeah went to v8s and rotors as well. Convoy met up at beforehand, bugger all 8s though. Mmmm perhaps a convoy of 8s to the nats...

phrenetiK
12-22-2010, 08:00 AM
Do you angle correctly into your driveway? proper angling helps you get up the scariest things :D

also not a huge fan of that wheel style unless you are super aggressive...take a look at the 8s in the media gallery to get an idea what wheels work better with stock height(not a lot look good at stock height either though lol)

Any of you guys interested in a day out in your RX8?
Maybe a meet up and a run around the country with a meal at the end of the day?
I had a talk to Brettus about this a couple of weeks ago and he seem to think it might be a good idea.
We could put a few ideas together and end up with a good day out and meet a few new people that also like RX8s.
We were thinking of maybe meeting up in the carpark of Hampton Downs and then maybe a mystery tour around some of the Waikato, Coromandel area and meet back at the end of the day for a meal and talk some general RX8 shit.
We thought maybe we could run this day sometime around the middle of March.
If any of you have any good places that might be worth a visit on the Mystery tour, then feel free to let me know.
Anyway have a think about it.

Looks like a good start to a get together, lets see if we can get to 10 people.
Maybe if any of you guys see someone else in your area with an RX8, you could leave a note on their car, or go and say hello to them and see if they might be interested in a good day out.
Anyway I will start to plan the mystery tour and see what Brettus and I can come up with.
One thing I will ask, do people want to do this on a Saturday or Sunday?
Probably won't make any difference to me, as I've got to travel 5 hours to get there anyway.

I've just about finished putting together the Mystery Tour draft plan and I will send a copy down to Brettus once I print it out. Then we can finalise it.
Hopefully it should be long enough to give us a good day out, and Miss8 you might even be able to go for a swim.
Don't forget your cars can fit 4 people in them, so bring along your friends, family, or even someone you pick up on the side of the road. Make sure they like RX8s though.

I have an '04 rx8, nothing like that type S you have, but its a good run about. :)

RX8 coils burning out happens quite often according to the guy who does my cars, just replace them and throw out the cat.

You could upgrade to Bosch coils, but more than likely the factory computer will have to be replaced or chipped.

I'm in the same boat. i have no idea when\if the spark plugs and coils were changed. Warm idle is still a bit rough (MAF cleaner fixed cold idle.) I'm thinking of getting the BHR kit, but need to save up some $$ first. Could be $900 by the time I convert to $US, paypal fees, and i'll probably get pinged for GST at customs.

Wish I had some mechanics in the family, cos I am definately mechanically challenged and have no idea what i am doing! :hahano:

The tour sounds good, the more the merrier!

Brettus
02-03-2011, 02:39 PM
/\ the cheapest way to get a properly running ignition system is to buy new coils , aftermarket high quality leads and plugs all at once . The BHR coils are good and will last longer but I've had a good run in my turboed 8 doing the above .

You should be able to get all that imported for around $300 -$350 .

Thanks, I didn't realise they did the stock coils. I already have been emailing him about the BHR kit, so have asked him for a price with stock coils.

The problem with combining orders is that the bigger the order, the more likely you will have to pay GST at customs?

That is very true - think the majic number is $400 but not 100% sure on that ....

Pretty sure Charles will , reluctantly, sell you stock coils .

"I do not sell the OEM coils but I can provide the plug wires (in red, black, or blue) and spark plugs shipped, for $166.40 (USD)"

I'll do some searching and see what i come up with.

That's a shame - two lots of shipping costs is a drag .

I got my last set from Mazdatrix and they were good to deal with

http://www.mazdatrix.com/8ignition.htm

other options :

http://raceroots.com/index.php/products/mazda/rx8/engine-and-accessories.html

http://www.mazmart.com/PartsList.aspx?id=38&n=NEW&m=6

of these Mazmart looks to be the cheapest and they are a forum vender as well ...

The RX8 Day out Mystery tour is a definate go and is booked for March 20 starting at 10.30am at Hampton Down track carpark.
I suggest to everyone coming to have at least one other person in their car, as it might get a bit differcult to read instructions on where you are going and drive at the same time.
The Mystery Tour is all finallised to where it is going and ideally as we get closer to the date, I will need to have a fair idea of numbers of cars coming, so I can make sure that I print off enough instructions sheets.
The day will be devided into two halfs with a morning run and afternoon run.
Stopping for lunch at a nice recommended cafe and a meal at the end the day.
You will need to bring with you a camera of some sort and a full tank of fuel.
I think you will all have a good day out driving on some really nice roads.
Don't forget to let as many people with RX8s know as you can.
Thanks

Rotaman

Coils I don't think you need to replace unless they are completely fried. As for ignition leads I have MSD lines which are very high quality. If you want them cheap orders them directly from MSD ignition in the states landed they cost 139 to purchase them in NZ it costs 230.

Spark plugs need to be replaced regularly every 20,000k's at least.

As for rough idle my rx8 has the same problem, idle holds fine just a little rough. I'm guessing its the spark plug which I will upgrade soon.

Yeah, we get ripped off for rx8 bits in NZ. Probably because the market is so small. I was in repco this morning and asked them for the price for a set of plugs. They wanted $120 each for them!!

I plan to do coils, leads, and plugs all together, just so they are in a known good state. I'm leaning toward getting stock coils rather than BHR, mostly because I got a mechanical warranty with the car, and they are very fussy about modifications. Last thing I need is to blow the engine and them to refuse my claim because I have better than stock coils. I'll probably do it next month when my bank account recovers from the kids going back to school.

Miss8, i'd have a look through your tenancy agreement to the clause that deals with increases in rent, and if there is one at all.

If you want you can send me through your agreement and i'll have a look at it. But, in general:
- rent can only be increased if the tenancy agreement states that it can be
- you'll have 60 days before the increase takes place

Aw you guys are so sweet looking out for me! But basically I'm screwed.. I don't have a tenancy agreement (but I am still protected by one by law, so at least I will have 60 days notice) and there is no law to limit a rent increase unless it is way above market value. Also my landlord is struggling to pay the mortgage so it sounds like they don't have a choice. They have also lost their other tenant in the 2nd rental property aswel as needing to do repairs on their roof.

Yes there is one . You need to put it back into the exhaust to avoid a cel .
I used to run a straight pipe for a while - sounded awful. Added a resonator to that and it was a lot better . Just removing the honeycomb from the cat does improve the sound - easy to do yourself . There is even a DIY for it on this site .

I found the DIY for the cat

Im thinking of getting magnecor KV85 8.5mm for $94usd or the Racing Beat ones for $98 usd. I decided to go against the 10mm magnecor r-100 due to probable install issues with space and even they said its over kill for street cars specially with no mods.
and was wondering if anyone knew the standard size of oem spark leads are they 7 or 8mm?? (Ive searched around but couldn't find it)

Hi There
I use Magnacor R100 ignition cable and there is no issues with space, but I'm using D-585 coils.
The only difference between KV-85 and R-100 cable is the Insulation layer is thicker, so is better for areas that get hot. Won't make any difference for what you want to use it for though.
I use KV-85 on my Rotary Beach buggy.
Hope this is helpful.

:icon_drooYou have a rotary beach buggy:worship: must see some time, the coils that you have D-585 are they better than OEM more reliable, last longer because i dont mind paying more for less replacements also did you get them from nz and how much for also do they fit without modification. OEM are going to cost me $50-$60 USD each because there is a shortage due to japan earthquake. And if I get a chance i will see what nz prices are at the dealership.

Rotaman
05-05-2011, 03:19 PM
If you are interested in having a look at the Rotabug, then go to my profile and have a look at my albums, under there you will find the Rotabug photos.
The D-585 coils are the same as BHR use. Supposedly they are a better more reliable coil. I had to import mine from the US, as these are not a common coil in NZ, but are a common coil in the US.
They are used on a fair few GM vehicles.
These coils are not a straight replacement. You will have to modify things to get them to fit/work.

hey rotaman when you got your magnecor r-100 did they come pre-made (ordered regular rx8 size) or did you make them your self.

Also I have decided to go for the BHR kit with R-100 leads. (just hope they can supply them with those leads or discount me just bout to send a email).

Hi blue

I make up the magnecor cable myself, but you can have it made from Magnecor or from Thundercords in Australia. I have delt with both companies.
Although at the moment due to the exchange rate, probably best to deal straight with Magnecor in the US.

Yea I noticed dealing with the companies directly at the moment is cheaper.

I emailed charles at BHR and he staying that the MSD, Magnecor and Moroso all perform equally and that "the coils also require a unique terminal that is somewhat difficult to procure in small quantities". I don't get that statement and will email him to clear it up but does that mean that the original terminals (on spark leads) won't fit on the coils?

Did you find this when fitting on your car rotaman?

Hi Blue

If you go to the BHR coils ( D-585 ) then yes they use a different coil terminal then the factory coils, so you are right in saying the original terminals on the leads won't fit. and yes they are a little harder to get hold of, but Magnecor do have all of the terminals that are needed and they will sell them in small quantities, I bought enough terminals to make 2-3 sets of cables.
If you decide to go with the BHR coils, then I'm sure Charles can supply all the parts you will need.
But if you decide to make it up yourself, which is what I did, then you will have to get hold of the ignition cable and terminals from Magnecor.
There are also the wiring terminals to think about, because the original coils are a three wire coil and the BHR ( D-585 ) coil are a 4 wire coil and the sockets that you need to plug into the factory coil plug are quite hard to get hold of and rather expensive for what they are.
You other alternative to the sockets that plug into the factory coil plugs, is to hard wire into the factory loom, which is not to differcult to do, but once you have done it that way, it is more differcult to go back to factory coils if you ever decide too.
If this sounds like its getting a little complex, then your best bet would be to keep with factory coils or buy the BHR kit.
Be aware that if you go with the BHR kit, and you have a JDM RX8, then you will probably get a CEL that comes up and it won't cause a problem, but you have to put up with the light on your dash.
If you would like to know more then feel free to ask.

I'm leaning towards getting stock coils and plugs, with some upgraded leads at some point. My main reason for shying away from the BHR kit is that this is my daily driven car, and we are on the other side of the world if something goes wrong with a BHR coil or lead. If I really need a stock one in a hurry they can be sourced locally, at a price premium of course.

I am considering buying something small and economical as a daily driver, in which case the BHR kit may be back on the agenda.

Man I hate my life, I was going to buy the full BHR kit with spark plugs straight from them. But I didn't know that the JDM came up with CEL's when installing this product, now I'm majorly back tracking is there any other problems that I might have with it.

If worst comes to worst I might just get OEM Coils with magnecor or msd leads.

Thanks

There is no problems with running the BHR kit, or equivalent setup, only that you will probably have to put up with the Cel light being on. The car will run just fine.
I have the D-585 coils setup on my car and it runs just fine, but I just put up with the Cel light being on.
Having said that, I don't use my car as a daily driver.

Hey guys, been told that I won't get a new wof for the 8 due to tyres so im in the market for a new set. Any suggestions?

I recommend round ones. :boink:

When mine wear out i'll be looking for something a bit quieter than the stock bridgestones. At that point I may go to 19" wheels too. :naughty:

I suggest if you are using factory rims, then Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 235-40-18 or Toyo T1R of the same size. Toyo will probably be the cheaper tire.
When I flat spotted my tyres on factory rims ( another story-not using ones brain ), I bought a set of Goodyear GSD3's as I had had these on other cars and found them to be excellant in the wet.
When I bought a new set of rims I went to the Toyo's as they were a better priced tyre for the larger rims, and I had used Toyo tyres our Legarcy and they were also good wet weather tyres.
Hope this is helpful.

I'm not going to go for the coils. Just going to go stock. I have too many people driving the 8 which will get confused about the light etc...

Any ways when my tires went bald i upgrade to 18x9" mags but still when for bridgestone re040 which is the same model as the standard rx8 tires, but the size was specific to GTR r34 and cost quite abit. I would recommend going bigger than 18 as 18's look small for the car in my opinion.(but depends on the style of mag.

When I got new tyres for Mrs Scotttnz's Mazda 3 about a month ago I ended up with Goodyear F1s. They seem to be very good, probably overkill for the 3, but I have a strong dislike for cheap tyres after an experience when i was younger. They were on a run out special because there was a new model coming out or something, so I don't know if they will still be available.

Had both goodyear F1 eagles and Falken Fk452s - both were good . Largest recommended size for stock rim is 245/40/18

I still got Hankook's v12... on the rear from the previous owner , they are ok.... but personally i wouldn't choose them

Bluerx advised on the cruise that the new Bridgestone store in Manukau give decent quotes

I've put on Hankook V12s - Quiet although they are pretty soft but I don't do huge kms but they seem to hold up well in the wet

$240 is a good price i doubt the manukau store can do that i spent 1200 on all 4 but was in a hurry to buy them. We put them on the rx7 and they grip very well but have not tried them in the wet.

Clevdon trip i hear u say i might see you there, the rx been garaged for 2 long and thought i might give twilight a run 2moro morning as well and good weather too. (actually might wait for midday possibly too much dew on the road)

Brett will be after the transmission , as the 5 speeds have better ratios for turbo powered rotas over the 6 speed, which bretts is.
