View Full Version : "Pop" or "Soda"?
I live in Soda territory now but was raised in a staunch Pop zone. So it's still Pop for me but now I'm self-concious about it :p
For the national survey see: http://www.popvssoda.com/
silvercloud 02-15-2004, 04:21 PM Ohio is pop territory - now I'm thirsty
gotta go to the fridge
i call it by what brand it is, either "Coke" or "Pepsi"
Jeff_pap31s 02-15-2004, 04:27 PM Mine is a mix between soda and coke but I prefer coke
Rotary Nut 02-15-2004, 04:52 PM Mountain Dew baby!
mental pimp 02-15-2004, 04:55 PM we call it coke down here, my favorite is SunKist
D MENAC 7 02-15-2004, 05:20 PM OK, there is one more regional name that is a variation of soda...
sody. That's the St. Louis area common name as I know it. 90 miles north, it's a mix of pop and soda. I just ask for a diet when out so it doesn't matter which brand I get.
TitaniumRX8MD 02-15-2004, 06:39 PM Even though I live in the Midwest, it still and always be soda!
h0rde 02-15-2004, 06:46 PM I'm a "soda" drinker stuck in a "pop" town. The people around here are crazy, they also call rubber bands "gum bands."
Z's Nightmare 02-15-2004, 07:10 PM so cal call it soda
rotarygod 02-15-2004, 07:11 PM Down here we call it Coke. You just need to be clear what flavor Coke you want (Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, etc...).
jtimbck2 02-15-2004, 07:26 PM In the deep South, it's generally "coke". Where I live (the South, but not the "deep" South), it's "drinks". For me it's "soda". I lived in Ohio a lot of my childhood, there it was "pop".
zoom44 02-15-2004, 07:30 PM soda guy stuck in pop territory. funny part is the people here look at me like im strange when they are clearly the weirdos

eccles 02-15-2004, 09:05 PM In the UK it's "pop" or "fizzy pop." Down Under, it's "soft drink."
Toadman 02-15-2004, 11:26 PM so cal call it soda No they don't, it's called by the brand name. Pepsi,Dr Pepper, Dew, Root Beer,Coke, etc. Soda is carbonated water or powdered baking soda. Pop is punching someone or busting a cap in him.
:)
MEGAREDS 02-16-2004, 12:20 AM I'm also a soda boy in a pop town... and I can't get a decent Cheesesteak.
Rotary Nut 02-16-2004, 09:11 AM Wazztzzzat?
:D
j1mb0x99 02-16-2004, 10:19 AM I grew up calling it Pop, but I eventually realized how silly pop sounds. It more of a sound effect than a drink. So, I started calling it soda. After that my family and friends made fun of me for calling it soda but so far I have converted a few of em. Eventually I'll have everyone saying soda. Hahahahahaha..(That was an evil laugh)

Let me get this straight because I'm pretty confused. So in the Southern States you call any kind of soft drink "Coke"? So if you want a 7-Up do you call it a "7-up Coke"?, What do you say if you want a Pepsi, "Pepsi-Coke" ?? and what do you get if you just say "Coke"? I'm so confused....... this is without a doubt the dumbest/funniest thing I think I've ever heard.
I think all of Canada refers to it as pop but you would order it by whatever brand you wanted, you say you want a "7-Up" not "7-Up Pop". Asking for a Soda would probably get you either a Soda Water or possibly just a funny look. If you asked for a "7-Up Coke" the waiter would think you're mental.

i hear that! there is exactly one place here that's half way decent and that is a vendor cart downtown portland. the next one is about 200 miles away.
NO no no...they call it "coke" for some reason...but coke can mean..pepsi, coke, sprite, 7-Up...whatever...I had to get used to it...if you go to a restaurant around here and say coke..they say, "what kind, we have sprite, sunkist, coke, diet coke"...it's mega wierd....
for me it's DEW baby...god i'm so addicted...i used to call it soda before i had a favorite ..now i'm an impulsively addicted dew-a-holic...

You and your buddies are sitting there watching a game.. you say "Hey, anyone want a coke?" and they say "yeah I'll have a Sprite", or "I'll have a Pepsi", or even... "I'll have a Coke"...
Or you might ask.."Hey, got any coke?" And they say "Yeah, you want 7-Up or Pepsi?"

guy321 02-17-2004, 08:54 AM Very interesting national survey..
It's probably called coke in the south because of the prevalence of the coca cola botteling plants in the south during the 40's - 80's..
Interesting note about Florida.. You can actually see the New England invasion into our lovely southern state..
Also Interesting is that there are more "Coke" areas than "Soda" areas, and that people in the desert regions dont drink "pop soda, coke or other!" White must mean water ;)
Also, what are some of the "other" responses??

And if you actually want a Coke, you say "Got any Coke-Cola?" (pronounced "ko-kola").
ALWAZL8 02-24-2004, 06:32 PM LMAO!!! guy321 is right on!
memrie 03-04-2004, 05:27 PM Grew up in St. Louis, alway called it soda. I currently live in Indiana, and my girlfriend and her parents call it both pop & "coke". BTW they live in a small town north of Indy.. not in the city itself.
