View Full Version : Selling my 8

Well... I've been talking about this for a while now... but I'm finally really going to do it. I'm selling my 8.

I've been doing a LOT of driving lately, I actually just hit 40k miles, after hitting 30k only 5 months ago. The way I look at it, I have 3 options:
- Refinance and buy a 2nd car for DD
- Sell the 8, buy something boring, save over the winter and buy something interesting in the Spring
- Sell the 8, buy something both more practical and faster than the 8.

I like the 3rd option the best but those are some really tough requirements to hit. A car that is both more practical and faster than the 8 AND reasonably priced? The only thing that hits all 3 is an '08+ STI.

The thing is that when I bought it, the 8 was a compromise. What I really wanted was an S2000, but there was just no way that could be my only car out here. That said, I've absolutely loved this car and I've loved the people it's introduced me to :) If it didn't depreciate as fast and I hadn't watched as many people get new engines... this would be a lot tougher of a decision.

So I'll still be around. I'll be on the boards, I'll still autox (either in an STI or if I go with the 2 car approach... probably an FD :D:) and I'll still show up at Dick's meets when I can... which isn't often anymore :(

Has to be faster than the 8 :p: But I considered it pretty seriously. Given a choice between a MS3 and a WRX... I'd probably take the WRX. But my goal is STI or cheapo <$5k civic or something.

If you are thinking 08 STi then I would consider 09+ WRX as well. The upgraded turbo is easily tuned. I came really close to buying the 2011 STI Sedan. They fixed the steering and suspension is better as well. And I think it looks better than the STi hatch.

I'd rather keep my 8 and turbo it, but it's just not practical. I've been routinely filling it with 3 passengers lately... ever tried to fit an acoustic guitar in a hard case into the trunk? Doesn't work very well :(

I'd go the 2 car route, but I don't want to daily drive in a boring car either...

I hear ya. I have gone over several scenarios myself. I think a Subbie would make a nice 2nd car. I would not mind a Legacy wagon for commuting and winter duty. Just a minor drop and upgrade the tunes and I'd be set.

i think it is.. but it depends what type of fast you're talking about.

the new 2011 wrx looks amazing. i was looking at an 08+ wrx or sti as well but talking to folks who have owned them they don't perform as well as some other platforms.

but nick, what's the price range? won't that limit what you consider?

Well, I own a s2000, rx8 and getting a fd again (fourth one lol). My wifes rx8 is @ 66k and running strong wit 190whp!! I think your too paranoid. As longasu maintain ur rotary itbwill run. Have u done ur reliability upgrades? Aka bhr igition coils n ngk laser spakr plugs? Koyo radiator? Check oil regularly n onlyuse normal none syth.? Install a mfd2 orgreddy mult gauge monitering device to keep ur eye on how ur engine runs day in andday out?

Get a s2k n keep ur 8. Its my wife dd and she loves it. N when she let's me drive it I do too! Make the s2k ur dd if needed or pick up a cheap 2.5 rs gc8.

Sorry to hear it Nick. The new Evo's are nice as well. In the new STI price range you are also looking at 335i's, which is what a lot of people end up going to from the 8 and being satisfied. Just a suggestion.

Seriously what is up with these trends?

1. Everyones getting replacement motors?
2. Now everyones going to sale their cars?

I dont have to get rid of mine just would make this "thing" easier.

If I go 2 car... there's a chance the 2nd one would be an FD. I'd just be afraid I wouldn't drive it enough to justify the cost :( My car had 3 passengers again yesterday and will again today, tomorrow and Sunday.

Anyways we should have "3 of us" dicks meet before anybody sell their 8

Lol, I want a Genesis coupe! But I'm still holding strong!

I test drove it before I bought out my lease. I would consider it more seriously if I buying my own car out wasn't such a good deal.

The Genesis had some serious throttle response issues. I short shifted it out of 2nd into 3rd and it hated life. I don't know what happened it bogged to all hell. Granted this is bogging to all hell relative to the level of refinement I expect out of a factory calibrated car.

It is no doubt the cheapest 300 hp car you could possibly buy though. The rear seats are completely useless in the Genesis. You all know how short I am, my head touches the ceiling and it has an awkward upright seating position. The trunk although much larger than the 8, is super long (fore/aft), not really wide and kind of shallow. Driver seating position is also kind of odd and the window controls are placed to give you carpel tunnel. Steering and brakes were good and a touch on the soft side. It's a good car, but I got out of it, hopped back in my own car and realized how much better it fit me. I then drove it to Nissan for a spin in the 370Z...

WRX... (yawn)... STI... (yawn)... I really don't care how fast it is, might as well just go to sleep than drive. Subaru... just blah. I've driven First Gen 2.5RS, Second gen WRX, Second Gen STI, Third Gen Legacy 2.5GT, and Fourth Gen Legacy GT. All good on paper and reviewed with the highest praise, but all put me to sleep. Then on top of that, all their engineering claims are BS (low CG/balanced motor due to opposing pistons).

It's more fun driving my POS Miata and my FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CRX than all those cars. If domestics were like a pile of mashed potatoes and a Camry was jello, Subarus are somewhere in between there just with a Turbo attached to it. I also can't stand the drivetrain back lash. Everytime you get off the gas it's like you and the whole car float forward a few inches.

Leon take me on another drive in the Genesis! I feel like it's something to be looked into since it's a 2.0T, that's what I would get.

Just go to Doug's in Lynnwood, they were pretty nice about it. Talk to Briana, the sales lady. She was pretty nice, didn't try to push you to buy something and was pretty welcoming to people who just want to try out the cars. They didn't have much in stock when I went, so I drove a 3.8 base model in 6 speed. I wanted to try the 2.0T. I feel like the 2.0T will probably feel kind of slow compared to the 8. The 3.8 had just the right amount.

Yeah, but the 2.0 seems like it will have a lot more room for customization.

I test drove a R3 this weekend. It was really nice. But I only had one problem! No more amber on the dash lights!!!! I was like...wtf!?!?! lol.

Eitherway, i dont know man. Here is my p.o.v.

Ive owned 32 cars in my short 23 yrs. mostly from 15 to 23. Starting with a CYM rx-7 fd 93.

Ive had from type r integras usdm, 4 fd's, (3 running) 6 fcs (4 running), 2 fb's, (both running), 5 s13's, 1 s14, evos, s2ks 2, rx8, civic si 2000, integras ls 2, and a coupel of passenger cars.

I regret losing a lot of them. The collectors value especially. Now, ive decided never to get rid of a collectors style car again, my wifes lighting yellow rx8 (04 only), my laguna blue ap1 first MY. I know times may be hard, but i rather buy a pos and keep my car. I love my rigs. I mean, if you add up all the moneys ive lost in trading and selling my cars i well be in the 100000 dollar mark. :(

1. buy civic now.

2. get FD later

OR

buy a shitty civic now that you can drive and fix it up ... you can go crazy with economod and get INSANE mpg: http://www.d-series.org/forums/forced-induction/117099-i-did-some-fe-testing-64-8mpg.html

http://asia.vtec.net/article/d15b/

go OBD1 for easier emissions compliance if you go for the d15b 3 stage motor
