View Full Version : Windshield scratches
Heya,
So I've had my 8 for a bit more than a year. Take good care of it, wash, wax, all good things. However, somehow no matter how carefully I go, each time I clean the windshield (usually with Invisible Glass), I add a scratch or two. They're too small to be visible normally, but at night or with the sun at just the right angle, you can see them from inside the car... my previous car never had anything like this, and I don't like it. I use a clean microfiber, in some cases brand new to wipe the windshield with Invisible Glass, as per instructions.
Has anyone else noticed this? Any idea how I can get rid of scratches in the windshield?
Thanks
wankelbolt 11-15-2010, 12:12 PM Stop using microfiber. It's the new name for polyester. Marketing scam. Use 100% cotton clothes.
As for scratching your windshield, I can't imagine how. Whatever you are using would have to be harder than glass to do so. Are you sure they are scratches and not residue? Try to scrape them off with a razor blade. My 8 has no scratches from cleaning it. Lots of chips from gravel kicked-up on the road course tracks, but no scratches.
FastFreddy61 11-15-2010, 02:27 PM Loki, I have an o4 and am careful when washing and cleaning,my front ,rear and side glass all have scratches on them visible from inside, even the paint has scratches/swirl marks more than I would expect, and yes , I know how to wash the car . This is the first car I have owned that this has happened to, it is a piss off.

Right, exactly, mine is an 04 as well. The paint seems OK, but this ultrasoft windshield isn't.
wankelbolt: I've used cotton also, also resulted in scratches. I guess I'm just going to squigee it from now on, but I'm curious how a windshield can be so soft.
At first I thought it was from a cat or something walking on my car, but the scratches follow my cleaning patterns. I can understand if once or twice a hard particle of something was caught in my towel (which has never happened in 10 years that I've been washing cars), but it's really every time I touch the windshield, I get more scratches.

How can you scratch glass with cotton? Not possible. Pics or it didn't happen. I'm guessing you left your diamond ring on, turned inward... :Peace:
FastFreddy61 11-16-2010, 12:19 PM FFs, if we both have identical problems with scratched glass, pls dont tell us it didnt happen.
Loki, the only explanation I can come up with is, I dont have city water, our water comes from a deep well ( 32 meters), maybe the minerals are what is causing this.

I don't know what to tell ya other than that's what it is. I don't make up stories to get your attention, trust me... and no, no rings here.
FastFreddy: I'm in the suburbs, the water is pretty good in that respect... what manufacture date is yours? Mine is October 03 or something like that. I'd love to see if this is an early production issue.
FastFreddy61 11-17-2010, 12:32 PM Loki, yes mine also is pre december 03.

RogueTadhg 03-06-2011, 04:35 PM The paint swirl gremlins will come, to all cars - even those in the garage, under a car cover.
Little update: I think there are more scratches ever since I had it washed at the dealer after an oil change. This is seriously starting to bother me. Windshields are not supposed to be this soft. Going to try Aquapel treatment (silicone film, basically) to see if it fills in the scratches at least a little.
bse50 03-07-2011, 04:35 PM it's the wiper blades scratching it. clean them.
Symbioticgenius 03-07-2011, 08:58 PM 2 things.
1. You cant scratch glass with anything softer than glass. Period. I cleaned snow off a windshield with a license plate, minimal scratches ensued.
2. You can use compound on a windshield.
I learned about one via doing the other lol
RogueTadhg 03-11-2011, 11:13 AM You can scratch the windshield. It's possible with rocks, dirty windshield wipers, and just neglect over time.
detailers use rotaries - keeping in mind that the heat can and WILL distort the glass.

Thanks for posting, I'll give this a (careful) try as well.
Windshield wipers are new as of September. In general, my routine has not changed at all since my previous car, and the previous one didn't have any scratches.
I agree 100% that you can't scratch the glass with something softer than the glass.... but all I have is evidence.
bse50 03-11-2011, 12:30 PM Road debris and rocks are harder than glass, and the wipers do an excellent job of "wet" sanding your windshield with whatever touches your glass :)
