So I took the family to the Lake Geneva Winter Festival today in southern Wisconsin... there's a bunch of cool snow sculptures on the edge of this big resort lake. Anyway, there are thousands of people here for this thing, and not nearly enough parking, so they used the frozen lake as overflow parking- crazy stuff for a Florida guy.

Wanting to really test out my snow tires and DSC, I decided to keep driving past the parking area where the snow was 5-6 inches deep on top of the ice to where only 4x4's dared to go. There were so many people pointing- I'm sure they were laughing to themselves that there was no way my RX-8 was going to make it back to dry land.

After I got a couple of donuts and slides in (ice was really rough underneath the snow- not as much fun as last year), I made my way back out of the deep stuff with no problems- even had an ice fisherman in a Bronco give me a 'thumbs-up' : )

Gotta love this car!

It's not like I was alone- as I said- there were hundreds of cars parked on the lake,

Last year there was no snow on the lake, and it was smooth as glass- everyone was out on the lake playing around. Even minivan driving soccer mom's were sliding around having fun, in addition to rear-wheel drive thrill-seekers like myself (I went out in both the Explorer and my old Miata). All the snow we've had in the last few weeks made it a very different feeling out there.

Oh..you mean you were literally ON the lake? LOL, never mind I didn't bother to read the entire thread, I assumed you were driving around a lake like Lake Tahoe or something.

I know what what you mean, ever time I go anywhere I get looks and comments, drives me nuts.

That is cool as F@%K!!! Now come down here to Antarctica and drive on the ocean! I wish I could bring my 8 down here, but I know most cars would never make it. Gotta have tracks or ballon tires.

Not so fast my friend- I guess you haven't seen the latest on the RX-8 import scene- this is the new ADM (Antarctica Domestic Market) SnowTank kit:

Now that's funny. It sure took me by suprise. Kinda like getting smacked in the side of the head while looking the other way.

I want an ADM!

I'm going to try to make it to the Autoshow this weekend Sean, and I'm going to take a photo with me... let's see if I can't convince the Mazda people there that it's an actual prototype...

I'm just a dumb Florida boy, but isn't it possible for the top of a frozen lake to crack, especially with tons of cars on it, and everything to fall through?

Sunset park on Miller (between lakewood and haligus). So when do you want your ADM kit installed? :)

Well, this dumb Florida boy has only been here for 18 months, so it seemed kinda weird to me at first, too. However, when you 4-6 weeks straight below 32 degrees, with two of those weeks below 10 degrees, apparently the ice gets really thick. The last few days have creeped above freezing around here, so I'm probably not going back this year : )

It depends on how thick the ICE is. Of course if it is too thin then you'll fall through. I am sure they have surveyors that check the ICE out. We do here in Antarctica when they make the ICE roads every season. Our problem would be cracks forming from the ICE shelf moving about 6 ft a year avg. We don't worry about thickness though considering the ICE is around 14 ft thick. Does that answer your questions?
