View Full Version : Help! How to get out of a apt. lease early?
BlkCamaro10 02-06-2004, 09:46 PM Here's the deal, I got into a lease for an apartment about a year ago, now things aren't going so hot. My x and I broke up and she took over the apartment and paying the rent. Shes had a couple roommates here and there to help her out, but now no-one is there. I lent her money time to time to help her out in the past, but now I dont have a job and her job is goin real slow ( yeah shes a stripper...go ahead and bash me ).
There are 2 months left on the lease, she is close to the $750 for this month, she tech. has till the 9th I believe to get things cleared up before things get bad (court and lawyers ). I do believe there is a waiting list for the apartment too. Im 21 shes 20, both of our names are on the lease. Im goin down tommarrow to try to reason to the management....i need suggestions though! I thought of surrendering the security deposit but thats pretty much it.....help! -Mike
noahprtlnd 02-06-2004, 09:50 PM So it's just the last month's rent that you don't have? I'd say just come up with the 750 somehow (do you have credit cards?) - regardless, I believe all they can do legally is try and force you to pay the money. If you don't have it, you don't have it.
RX-GR8 02-06-2004, 09:52 PM yea its not like you have 6 months to go. you already have this months rent almost and worry about next month next month. the real question is what is she going to do after the lease ends? live with you? start another lease?

Well I wasn't mentioning credit cards as an option for payment, but as a way you could get cash - use them to get cash forwarded at ATM's, then pay the rent with the $. But you don't have them anyway so never mind. LET THE NEW BF PAY IT!!

It's my place partially in my name, just got to fess up to it, try to make things workout. 2 months is not a big deal, hopefully management will c that. The x spends too much time tryin to have fun (immaturity linked to that) so thats why theres a lack of cash at this time. Thank god! for Fridays, she might be working but Mr. Bean and Capt. klegg 02-07-2004, 10:28 AM You did not say what state you are in....If there is a waiting list, most states require the landlord to mitigate his damages...in other words, tell him to try to lease it out..he should be able to do it asap, pay what you have for the last month....if its close to what is owed they probably will not go to court over it...also, you can let him keep the SD...
Some friendly advice? Do not date strippers...I have represented a few, and they usually have deep set emotional problems..

BlkCamaro10 02-07-2004, 09:01 PM Update: My x slept in, didnt have a chance to go to the mngt. office. Here's the weird thing, she hasnt been to the apartment in a couple days, more like a week, and there was no eviction notice. The rent is due at the begining of the month.....
Here's some drama for ya.....I got her bf's cell phone number, he offered to help her out with rent before. She owes me $400 from awhile ago, if he steps in and pays for my half this month, its all set. Keep in mind Im goin to college and still struggling to find another job. I told her the idea and she was PISSED! She doesnt want me talkin to her bf, cuz well....she told him she wasnt talkin to me anymore. And when she does talk to me over the phone..well its about everything if u get my drift. She doesnt want us talkin, finding everything out. He'll drop her like a bum after a steak in a streetfight. Blackmail is the name of the game, and im just playin by her rules. Oyeah, im in Ohio. The apartment is in downtown Cleveland. So now instead of being rude and pissed at me, shes now trying to be all sweet and sincere. She said she is going to work the next couple days and make my half of the rent too. Things might be going my way, but I'll keep on my toes, she might have enough time to plan things against me. Dam strippers. Where's all the "normal" girls at? do they even exist? -Mike
blizz81 02-10-2004, 09:28 AM Cardinal rule: never get anything more than a month-to-month lease if your roommate+girlfriend is a stripper :D
