View Full Version : I drive the RX-8 @ Laguna Seca rxman720b 01-18-2003, 12:20 AM See me in the car. http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1954 Hercules 01-18-2003, 12:28 AM Wow congrats! How did you get invited to such a beautiful event? Maybe in the future my site will pick up traffic and I too can be invited to beat on Mazda's future cars :) Z's Nightmare 01-20-2003, 03:15 AM How tall are you rxman720b? the backseat looks pretty cramped with you in there rxman720b 01-20-2003, 09:23 AM Originally posted by Z's Nightmare How tall are you rxman720b? the backseat looks pretty cramped with you in there Standing in shoes, 6'5". A tall person sitting behind me would have trouble. I was able to sit in the back seat fairly comfortably behind a normal person. :D The back seats have allot more room than you think. rxman720b 01-20-2003, 09:25 AM Originally posted by rxman720b See me in the car. http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1954 BTW this was the only left hand driver there! I had to learn how to drive and shift on the other side! Pretty wild! DonG35Miata 01-20-2003, 09:30 AM BTW this was the only left hand driver there! I had to learn how to drive and shift on the other side! Pretty wild! It looked like there were plenty of LHD cars there. Rotarynews posted pics of someone driving their test car, which was LHD... I can't imagine Mazda brought over all those cars to the United States just to put journalists in RHD vehicles. Was this the same event? Your 3-rotor looks BAAAADDDD.... litespeed 01-20-2003, 10:42 AM In the above posted picture if the back door were closed would it interfere with line of sight? I'm 6'3" and usually all my seats are all the way back. If the back door is closed can you see out to the left? Thanks rxman720b 01-20-2003, 07:03 PM Originally posted by DonG35Miata It looked like there were plenty of LHD cars there. Rotarynews posted pics of someone driving their test car, which was LHD... The only cars on the tracks were RHD prototypes. They told please don't smash them into the wall! The cost about $250K a piece. There were a couple of LHD on display and the ones the Mazda exec.s were driving. It must of been a different day because I was there when all of the finance and banking people were there. I didn't see the folks from Rotarynews. They have been holding these "drives" for the past two weeks. Thanks, I like to think it is BAAADDDD. But I won't get rid of the 3 rotor to get an RX-8 though. It all depends on what the new RX-7 looks like. (Oops did I say that?) rxman720b 01-20-2003, 07:05 PM Originally posted by litespeed In the above posted picture if the back door were closed would it interfere with line of sight? Thanks I don't remember having any trouble looking out the back or my vision being blocked. But I also had my helmet on. 01-20-2003, 09:47 PM hey, rxman720b have you driven a 350Z? if you have, can you please let me know your impression on these two cars? what would u pick, rx8 or 350Z? i'm thinking bout either one and prob gonna get it in a year or so. just want to know your driving impression of the 2 and what is better? the differences? thanx! rxman720b 01-20-2003, 10:49 PM Originally posted by suckmdk69 hey, rxman720b have you driven a 350Z? if you have, can you please let me know your impression on these two cars? what would u pick, rx8 or 350Z? i'm thinking bout either one and prob gonna get it in a year or so. just want to know your driving impression of the 2 and what is better? the differences? thanx! I have only sat in a 350z. Never really had desire to drive one. It looks nice on the outside, but the Z looks really cheap and plastic inside. A big turnoff in my opinion compared to how nice the RX-8 looks in side. The RX-8 looks much more expensive inside than the 350z. I am a true rotorhead so I would pick the RX-8. DonG35Miata 01-20-2003, 11:04 PM What did you think of the leather? I have heard conflicting reports about it so I opted for cloth... but jeez, does that two-tone look good! Nice pic! 01-21-2003, 02:39 AM i'm just curious, how come the engine "START" button didnt' make it to the production car? u know, like the one on S2K...i thoght it's cool...anyone know where it went??? rxman720b 01-21-2003, 07:53 AM Originally posted by DonG35Miata What did you think of the leather? I have heard conflicting reports about it so I opted for cloth... but jeez, does that two-tone look good! Nice pic! The two-tone is way cool! I thought the leather was fine. Can't judge it entirely because these were hand built prototypes. The production models may differ slightly. The leather was plush and soft. Not stiff and tight. I liked it. I would like to see it soft and supple in the production models. quicks8 01-21-2003, 08:36 AM rxman720b Thanks for posting man. Your the first person that I have seen to provide some acutal correspondence on the Leguna Seca event. Here is a link to my pix! http://www.3rotorrx7.com/RX-8%20@%20Laguna%20Seca.htm xeos 01-21-2003, 10:09 AM Great pics! :D Is the RX-8 with a spoiler in the titanium color? How light/dark is this paint? (More grey or silver?) Have seen many pictures of the titanium but never any descriptions of the color other than "it looks great". The silver one in your pics looks so light, almost white? m477 01-21-2003, 11:08 AM Hey, how does the headroom in the RX-8 compare to an FD? Is it the same, or more? I'm 6' tall, and I have plenty of headroom in my R2, even with a helmet. If I order an RX-8, I want a sunroof, but I'm worried that there won't be enough room when I'm wearing a helmet.... pmacwill 01-21-2003, 11:19 AM Originally posted by xeos Great pics! :D Is the RX-8 with a spoiler in the titanium color? The silver one in your pics looks so light, almost white? I think that is a white one in his pics. Remember japan gets white as well, and these were pre-production versions for all the different markets. (The silver is certainly quite light though. If it wasn't there wouldn't be anything much distinguishing it from the titanium) rxman720b 01-21-2003, 04:20 PM Originally posted by xeos Great pics! :D Is the RX-8 with a spoiler in the titanium color? Yes the one with the ground effects was the Titanium color. rxman720b 01-21-2003, 04:25 PM Originally posted by m477 Hey, how does the headroom in the RX-8 compare to an FD? Is it the same, or more? There is more room than the FD. I drove the white one w/o a sunroof. I fit fine with a helmet on. I am 6ft 5in. there is a little less room with the sunroof. rode in that one, but didnt drive it. state island 01-21-2003, 04:52 PM this is the closest i've been to an rx-8 , talking to a person who drove it, lol Manifest 01-21-2003, 05:59 PM Anyone else notice that the PIC of the interior Ti/Brown leather, the seating sides do not seem to have the ridges that the cars in Detroit had??? RXhusker 01-21-2003, 06:11 PM Originally posted by Manifest Anyone else notice that the PIC of the interior Ti/Brown leather, the seating sides do not seem to have the ridges that the cars in Detroit had??? I noticed that also -- I like it better without the ridges -- think it looks higher quality. Manifest 01-21-2003, 06:20 PM I agree, it gives it a much better look and finish. The "ribs" make it look cheap; and made it feel like vinyl. A good reason to wait and see what the final cars look like, but I hope they come rib less – she don’t need no extra pleasure. xeos 01-22-2003, 11:10 AM Originally posted by rxman720b Thanks! It is darker silver/grey metalic. Yes the one with the ground effects was the Titanium color. Seems like it's titanium for me! :D In my mind sunlight silver is just too hard to get clean, to bright. You can still see the beautiful lines of the car in titanium. rotisserie 01-22-2003, 12:51 PM Hi rxman720b, I saw on your website that they put your car on the dyno. What numbers did you put down? :) rxman720b 01-22-2003, 10:39 PM Originally posted by rotisserie Hi rxman720b, I saw on your website that they put your car on the dyno. What numbers did you put down? :) It was just a test n tune. So 3rd gear pull 8psi around 380-390 RWHP 375 ft/lbs torque. Not bad numbers for 3rd gear and such low boost! I am still fine tuning the the A/F maps and it keeps getting faster!:p rxman720b 01-22-2003, 10:42 PM It will be interesting to see the HP once I get it tuned to where I am happy with it. And then.... see what it will do at 14psi in 4th gear. Should get somewhere around 450-500RWHP. It will already run over 125mph in the 1/4 mile! So it can only get faster. chinx 01-23-2003, 03:10 PM hey rxman720b, you are a very LUCKY guy to be able to drive the rx-8, and on laguna seca no less! thanks for sharing the experience! 2 questions. you said the car is hard to slide and plants down real well. were you able to induce a drift out of a corner? in several of mazda's video shots it showed the car drifting perfectly thru corners, looks like a lot of fun and looks real cool doing it. now i want one even MORE also, anyone at the event leaked anything about the next rx-7? ZoomZoom 01-23-2003, 07:46 PM Apparently Mazda is now admitting that they have an RX-7 prototype under “heavy development”, but they are still claiming that there is still no commitment to producing the beast. That being said, most of the rumors are now claiming a 2006 production launch. I still believe that the deciding production factor will be how successful the RX-8 is. chinx 01-23-2003, 08:42 PM that is what i've heard...somewhere. perhaps it's just rumor, but word has it that they have the basic designs finished but are waiting for the company's go-ahead, which is dependent on how well the rx-8 sells. think it'll do well? duh DreamWarrior 01-24-2003, 10:07 AM On the engine/tranny pic on your website...that oil filter looks like its in a fun position to get to?? Can you reach it from the top of the engine, because if not it doesn't look like you are getting to it from down under.... Or maybe I'm just a tard. rxman720b 01-24-2003, 10:23 AM Originally posted by chinx hey rxman720b, you are a very LUCKY guy to be able to drive the rx-8, and on laguna seca no less! thanks for sharing the experience! You can get the car to slide any where you want when you turn off the skid contol. All I heard was a slip about when the new RX-7 comes out.....then everyone suddenly was dead quiet.:p rotisserie 01-25-2003, 08:37 AM Hi rxman720b, sorry for the late reply just wanted to say your car is BAD ASS:) rxman720b 01-25-2003, 09:32 AM Originally posted by rotisserie Hi rxman720b, sorry for the late reply just wanted to say your car is BAD ASS:) Thanks~!:D rxman720b 01-25-2003, 11:14 AM Originally posted by DreamWarrior On the engine/tranny pic on your website...that oil filter looks like its in a fun position to get to?? Since Mazda has lowered and shoved the engine back further towards the middle of the car, they had to put that funky angle on the oil filter mount. It should still be accessable from the top after you remove some of the cosmetic panels that are covering it up. It is still in about the same position as it always had been. rxman720b 01-25-2003, 11:51 AM I want to know if I can retro fit that new electric steering rack to my FD RX-7! One more belt to take off the motor!! chinx 01-26-2003, 12:17 PM wow that is a GREAT pix of the rx-01! it looks real pretty in that picture |
