not sure if it goes here or electronics.. but

who makes the Mazda ECU?
i am hoping it's not Denso cuz it's uncrackable

best if it's Bosch so we can easily chip it

The new ECU's are Flashroms. And, btw nothing it's uncrackable =).

so is Flashrom easy to crack?

regarding Denso, yes it's crackable, infact, if you have about 2 million, Denso will sell you their program or decryption.

however for Bosch, any vendor could ask for a manual practically. and as long asyou know what you are doing, you can chip /hack/ or whatever right on the ECU(faster). Where as the Denso, you'll have to piggy back another ecu to mask the incoming/outgoing signals (slower)

There are ship upgrades for RX-7s, so I wouldn't expect any problems on the RX-8.

I am curious if it is speed-density or has an air flow sensor though. Anyone know for sure?

From what I read on Miata.Net the 01 Miata and newer models have an encrypted chip. I would expect teh 8 to have the same.

Okay. This is what I know so far about the Mazda RX-8 ECU. It's a much faster computer compared to the FD3S & it will be a 32Bit MCU. (FD3S Rx-7 had the 8bit & 16bit MCU's.)

MazdaSpeed will offer an ECM upgrade in Japan... It's worth it, cos not many people out there understand the standards of tunning a rotary sequential injection & the timing table (lead & trail spark) and specially with the new side housing port timing!!!.

A binary hex hacking, or a piggy back hacking will not work as good as a Mazda Speed ECM. Also, the two fly-by-wire throttle body..will be hard to replace with a stand alone. You'll need to pay alot of money to have a proper tuning.
