What can it do to the motor?? The reason why I ask is that when I got the car it already had almost 10 miles on it and I'm afraid it might have been on some scary test drives...

In the owners manual it states that there is no so called break in period. But then also has recommendations for when to shift (at what rpms) for the first 1000 or 1500 miles. My advice is read the owners manual.

My advice is do a forum search. There's been literally hundreds of posts form people detailing what they have done and end results. I kinda babied it for the first 600 miles, although I did redline it a few times during that time. At 10,300 miles now with no problems.

oh boy, first 600 miles

1. no revs
2. under 4500 rpms
3. mixed driving
4. opt out WOT

after 600, let it loose :)

All it says in the owners manual about the 600mi period is avoid spending A Large Amount of Time over 7k rpms and WOT. I have just followed these instructions and the car is working fine at 2k mi.

I heard that MazdaSpeed recommends not going over like 3k or 4k RPMs for the first 60 miles, then +1k rpms after that for the next 60, etc till you hit the redline. Not 100% on that so check it out for yourself before damaging your car.
